Beat reporter Mark Sheldon answers questions from Cincinnati fans By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com | @m_sheldon | 12:52 PM ET + 17 COMMENTS There's now less than a month to go before Reds pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training in Goodyear, Ariz., on Feb. 13. As anticipation builds, let's dive into another edition of the Inbox. When the Reds had the rotation of Johnny Cueto, Mat Latos, Bronson Arroyo, Homer Bailey and Mike Leake, Cincinnati had some great seasons of pitching. With the Reds' new staff and new prospects, how close are they to getting back to a staff as good as the past? -- Louie S., Cincinnati That's very hard to predict, but remember this: Cueto, Bailey and Leake didn't come to the big leagues as finished products. Cueto was 20-25 with a 4.61 ERA in his first two seasons in 2008-09, and he gradually morphed into an ace. Bailey had a 4.89 ERA, along with injuries and demotions to Triple-A, from 2007-11 before he cranked out his first 200-inning season in '12. Leake went straight from college to the Majors in 2010, but he went through some struggles and needed a brief stop in Triple-A in '11. For the current Reds, Anthony DeSclafani is the most known quantity, but Dan Straily certainly showed he's capable of 200 innings after a really nice first season in Cincinnati. Brandon Finnegan showed he can pitch a whole season, and now he needs to show he can navigate deep into a game. Cody Reed and Robert Stephenson had struggles and disappointments last season, while Amir Garrett arrives in camp with a shot at a spot and a lot of promise. But Garrett may struggle, too. After that, there are pitchers like Sal Romano, Nick Travieso and others. For an organization that has rarely developed its own pitchers in the past few decades, the prospect talent is deep. But that doesn't mean they will all succeed in the Majors. What will the Reds do with Eugenio Suarez when Nick Senzel is ready? Because at the rate he's going, it won't be long. -- @buckeyegoody That's an issue that likely won't come to a head in 2017. The Reds know Senzel, the No. 2 overall pick in '16 and a third baseman like Suarez, won't likely be in the big leagues this season. Senzel will likely begin at Class A Advanced or Double-A, and general manager Dick Williams said during the Winter Meetings it was unlikely he would be expected to contribute this season. As for 2018? We'll have to wait and see. A lot can change in a year. Who do you see manning right field this year for the Reds? Is Jesse Winker ready? Or could perhaps Senzel play third base, moving Suarez to right field? He has a great arm and glove and is developing into a very good hitter. -- Mike S., Nashville, Tenn. Right now, the right-field job is Scott Schebler's to lose after the way he played the final two months last season. If Winker did come up and earn a big league roster spot, I could see him playing left field and Adam Duvall shifting to right. As for the Senzel part, I don't see Suarez moving to right field. Why does ownership always label Cincinnati a small-market team as a problem with attracting talent and building a strong roster these days? St. Louis has a whopping 20,000 more area population and is rated as a small-market team, too, but they seem to put a competitive team on the field every year. -- Greg B., Connersville, Ind. According to Nielsen, the St. Louis television market is ranked 21st nationally and has more than 350,000 TV homes than Cincinnati, which is ranked 36th. The Cardinals have also drawn more than three million fans in 17 out of the last 18 seasons. This has enabled the Cardinals to be ninth in Opening Day payroll, all of which means they are not a small-market club. The Reds have never drawn three million but have gotten two million or more fans in 11 of the past 14 seasons. They were 25th in payroll entering last season. The Reds simply can't try to outbid teams on premier free agents in order to spend their way to a championship. Many bigger market clubs have tried, unsuccessfully. Cincinnati is wisely trying to build a winner through Draft and development of prospects while also expanding its budget internationally on players in Latin America. The Reds are trying to use the trades of their pricier veterans to stockpile talent -- some of the deals have brought the likes of DeSclafani, Suarez and Jose Peraza. It takes time to build this way, but there is a path to success and it takes patience. I realize it's way early, but who could possibly be traded come the Trade Deadline this summer? -- @redsmccurdygal Certainly Zack Cozart and Brandon Phillips come to mind, if they are not dealt before Opening Day. If Drew Storen, signed to a reasonable one-year contract worth $3 million, can rebuild his value in the bullpen with a good first half, he could be a candidate. I'm sure teams will be calling about players like DeSclafani, Straily and Billy Hamilton, if they are having a good season. It's always good to listen, but the haul would probably have to be huge for Williams to take it. CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Reds minor leaguer suspended 50 games The Enquirer 5:20 p.m. ET Jan. 13, 2017 Reds minor league pitcher Carlos Gonzalez received a 50-game suspension on Friday, as announced by Major League Baseball. Gonzalez was one of six minor league players to be suspended. From the MLB release: The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that six Minor League players have been suspended following their violations of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Cincinnati Reds Minor League right-handed pitcher Carlos Gonzalez has received a 50-game suspension after testing positive for Methamphetamine, a stimulant in violation of the program. The suspension of Gonzalez, who is currently on the roster of the Triple-A Louisville Bats of the International League, will be effective at the start of the 2017 International League season. The following three players have each received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Amphetamine, a stimulant in violation of the program. The suspensions will be effective at the start of each player’s respective 2017 season. New York Mets Minor League right-handed pitcher Gary Cornish, who is currently on the roster of the Single-A Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York-Penn League. Houston Astros Minor League right-handed pitcher Makay Nelson, who is currently on the roster of the Single-A Tri-City ValleyCats of the New York-Penn League. Boston Red Sox Minor League outfielder Tyler Spoon, who is currently on the roster of the Single-A Greenville Drive of the South Atlantic League. The following two players have each received a 50-game suspension following a second positive test for a drug of abuse: Detroit Tigers Minor League right-handed pitcher Tommy Collier, who is currently on the roster of the Double-A Erie SeaWolves of the Eastern League. The suspension of Collier will be effective at the start of the 2017 Eastern League season. Free agent Minor League infielder Kal Simmons. The suspension of Simmons will be effective immediately upon signing with another Major League organization. .

    Implicitly Defined Baseball Statistics December 9, 2012 Joe Scott 1 Introduction Major League Baseball uses statistics to determine awards every season. The batting champion is given to the player with the highest batting average. The Cy Young Award is given to the top pitcher which is determined by many different statistics including earned run average (ERA). Batting average and ERA have been used for many years and are major statistics in baseball. Neither batting average or ERA consider the skill of the opposing pitcher or batter. Thus, every pitcher and batter is considered to have the same skill level. We develop an implicitly definded statistic that determines the skill or value of a player. The value of a batter and the value of a pitcher is based on the skill of the oppposing pitcher and batter respectively. We use linear algebra to find eigenvector solutions to the eigenvalue problem, Aλ = λx, which generates each player's statistical value. 2 Idea Consider a baseball league in which there are Nb players who bat, represented by bi for 1 ≤ i ≤ Nb. We represent the number of pitchers in the league as pj, 1 ≤ j ≤ Np where Np is the number of pitchers. Nb is defined as the number players who record an at bat during a specific season and Np is the number of players who record a pitching appearance during a season. The total number of players in the league, Ntp, is represented by the inequality Ntb ≤ Nb + Np. This inequality considers players who both hit and pitch. Since in the National League pitchers hit as well as pitch we need to add the pitchers to the total number of batters and in interleague play (which is when American League teams face National League teams in the regular season) American League pitchers bat when the National League team is home.

    STANFORD BASEBALL CLIPS April 6, 2011 Pries a Bulldog on the Mound By Ryan Reiswig There’s a defining moment in every great athlete’s career when they perform on level that made them realize they have something special, something that their peers long to experience. For Stanford junior right-hander Jordan Pries, that moment came in his freshman year, 2009. Pries and the Cardinal were facing off against the No. 2 Sun Devils of Arizona State. This game was especially big for Pries not only because of the high-powered offense he was facing, but because of the opposing pitcher as well. Starting that game for Arizona State was Mike Leake, who since that day was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds and became the first player in 10 years to go from college directly to the major leagues. “We had a 2-0 lead, I struck out ten guys that game, gave up two hits in front of like 5,000 people,” says Pries, an Alameda, Calif., native. “It was one of the biggest experiences of my life. I remember having guys at second and third at some point and I got a big strikeout, got a guy to pop-up. I remember thinking, ‘This is awesome.’” The modest and usually calm Pries got so caught up in the moment, he did something out of character. “In college, that was the most emotion I’ve shown on the mound,” says Pries. “I usually don’t fist pump just because I try and stay fairly collected but I remember I gave a few (fist pumps) that game.” Even though the Cardinal ended up losing that game, Pries proved to himself and the rest of the nation that he can pitch against the best.

The Kansas City Royals agreed to a three-year deal with Jeremy Guthrie that pays him $5 million on 2013, $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. He went 8-12 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Bailey went 13-10 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Latos went 14-4 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a bit apples and oranges: Guthrie is a free agent; Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time, Latos for the first. But the point is starting pitching — even mediocre starting pitching — is expensive.
