ELK & MORE

Package Includes: • 1 Night’s Lodging at Best Western Inn plus baggage handling • 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner plus gratuities • Visit to Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train • Elk County Visitor Center with Movie and Storyteller • Highland Chocolates • Patterson Farms • Transportation

DAY 1: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2020

Our adventure will begin at our first stop the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train . You will travel back through time on an old-time narrow gauge steam locomotive, the Henry Clay. Built in the 1920s, The Henry Clay takes you on a scenic three-quarter mile ride around the side of Mahanoy Mountain to show you another kind of mining called strip mining. You’ll visit the Mammoth Stripping, area where an unusually thick seam of anthracite known as the Mammoth Vein outcrops to the surface of the earth. Here, in days gone by, monstrous steam shovels ripped out millions of tons of coal from the exposed vein and left a wall of solid rock 150 feet high extending westward as far as the eye can see. Much of the coal was pulled out by the narrow gauge predecessors of our own Henry Clay . . . a lot of it on the same trackbed. You’ll learn about the Centralia mine fire as you gaze across the valley to find smoke rising out of the ground. Pioneer Tunnel is a horizontal drift mine. Its level tunnel runs 1800 feet straight into the side of the Mahanoy Mountain. You make the trip in comfort, riding in open mine cars pulled by a battery-operated mine motor. The temperature inside the mine averages 52 degrees, so a sweater or jacket is recommended. Deep inside the mine, you will alight from your car and follow your miner-guide as you are given an explanation of how coal is mined. There are storyboards inside the mine depicting the mining operation. Your guide will point out the numerous coal seams and describe various configurations of passageways, some cut from solid rock in order to reach the coal.

We will make a fast food stop on our way to the Elk Country Visitors Center in Benezette. The center features a “Story Theater” presenting an experience that will immerse you in the sights, sounds and smells of a mixed hardwood forest and the natural world of the elk. Before having a BBQ dinner we will have time to view the elk. Seeing an elk for the first time is an extraordinary event and something you’ll never forget. We may even hear them bugle!! Following the meal a cowboy storyteller or poet will join us for entertainment We will have more time to view the elk before we make our way to Clearfield where we will settle in at the Best Western Inn for the night.

DAY 2: TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2020 After a continental breakfast at the hotel we will depart for Wellsboro to visit Highland Chocolates, famous for their pretzel bark and hundreds of different molded chocolates along with sweet snack mixes and fresh fudge. We will enjoy a sit down tasting of pancakes, ham cooked with maple syrup, apple wedges to sample the maple cream and maple granulated sugar. A chance to shop in their store will be given before departing for home. DATE: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 & TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2020
