Postgame Notes & Quotes Stanley Cup Playoffs First Round, Game 5 5, Calgary Flames 1 Friday, April 19, 2019

The Avalanche advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Mikko Rantanen, Colin Wilson, Nathan MacKinnon and all finished with three-point nights, the first time in franchise history that four players each record three points in a series-clinching game.

Johnny Gaudreau’s in the first period was the first postseason penalty shot against in Avalanche/Nordiques franchise history.

Mikko Rantanen recorded his fourth straight multi-point game (2g/1a), the first Avs player to notch four consecutive multi-point games in the postseason since Peter Forsberg (five games) and Joe Sakic (four games) during the 2002 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Rantanen now has nine points (5g/4a) in the postseason, ranked third among all skaters.

Colin Wilson matched postseason career highs with two goals (April 15, 2015 vs. Chicago) and three points (May 5, 2016 vs. San Jose).

Nathan MacKinnon registered three points (3a) and now has 24 points (8g/16a) in 18 career postseason contests, the highest points-per-game average (1.33) among active players and the fifth-highest in Stanley Cup Playoff history among players with at least 10 points.

Tyson Barrie recorded a postseason career-high three points (3a), surpassing his previous high of two (2x – last: April 14, 2018 at Nashville).

Philipp Grubauer has posted a 1.90 goals-against average and a .939 save percentage through the first round of the postseason, ranked second and third, respectively, among playoff goaltenders who have played more than one game.

Colorado has scored a power-play in each of its last three outings, going 5-for-17 (29.4%) over that span. The Avs have scored multiple power-play goals twice in this series (also: Game 3, April 15, 2019, 2-for-8).

Colorado C Nathan MacKinnon On Advancing To Round 2: “No one picked us to win this series. I had never won a round before in the NHL, and it’s been a long time. It’s exciting the way we did it. Get a little rest now. We have a good group, and we’re excited to see how far we can go.”

On Defeating The Flames: “It’s definitely satisfying. We haven’t won the Cup yet. It’s only Round 1, but it is exciting that we did move fast [against] the Flames. We’re going to be an underdog for the rest of the playoffs. We’re excited for the Challenge.”

Colorado D Ian Cole On Reaching The Second Round: “The whole point of being in the playoffs is to win the rounds. We obviously got the job done. It’s great. It’s a great team that we beat. We stepped up. We really elevated our game, everyone did, and we’re going to have to do it for a couple more rounds now, hopefully. Obviously enjoy it and get back to work.”

On Being The No. 8 Seed Defeating The West’s Top Team: “I think it speaks to the parity in this league. We felt pretty confident coming into this series that we could get the job done. We didn’t have success record-wise against them during the season, but we felt good about our games and we felt good about the matchup and the personnel- wise. Like you saw out there, I think we did a good job with it. I think everyone is happy and ready to turn the page after tonight and get back to it.”

Colorado RW Mikko Rantanen On Coming Back From His Injury At The End Of The Regular Season: “It’s not fun to be hurt, but you have to find some positive things and maybe one thing is that I got rest and felt good coming back. Like I said before, the medical team did a great job in getting me ready to play in this series. I have to say a great team effort in all five games.”

On Advancing To Round 2: “It’s big, but we’re not done yet. I think everybody is hungry. You could see even after this game. Guys were not celebrating too much. We know we’re not done yet. There is a lot of work to do, but this is the first step.”
