(1994) Directed by Dr. Cort McClaren. 188 pp. The Ludwig Drummer was the longest-running percussion publication of the twentieth century. The first series of issues documented percussion products and players from the early 1920s to 1948. The second series was published from 1961 to 1976. Although the Ludwia Drummer was widely distributed, no public library holds a complete set of issues, and the information in the Ludwig Drummer has previously D.e2n unavailable. A network of percussion professionals was established l~ the United States and Canada in order to combine resources and compile a complete set of the known issues. Each article in the issues from 1961 to 1976 was annotated and indexed to create a single document for reference purposes. © 1994 by Calvin Alonzo Bolton APPROVAL PAGE This dissertation has been approved by the following committee of the Faculty of the Graduate School at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. FORMAT OF THE ANNOTATIONS .............. 45 vi l CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Periodicals often serve as primary sources of information for music educators and peLformers. A considerable number of periodicals focus on specific areas of study such as music theory, music history, music education, and performance practice. Music periodicals that deal with specific subject areas include Early Music, Jazz Times, Journal of Music Therapy, Percussive Notes, Instrumentalist, Clavier, Journal of Music Theory, and Music Educators Journal. While professional associations and societies often publish magazines or scholarly journals for the benefit of their members, manufacturers of musical instruments, music publishers, and other agents within the music industry also provide publications to interested clientele. Many aspects of the music industry are promoted through publications designed to attract specific audiences as well as to sell products. Catalogues and brochures are regularly distributed to inform the public of products and services. Instrument manufacturers often distribute materials to promote specific brands of instruments. Instrument manufacturers generally advertise in periodicals that attract specific markets. Occasionally, 2 manufacturers establish in-house publications as a means of advertising their products. During the 1920s, three drum manufacturers initiated their own publications in an effort to promote percussion education and their own brand of instruments. These manufacturers included Leedy Drum Company, Premier Drum Company, and Ludwig & Ludwig Drum Company. Leedy Drum Company published twenty-nine issues of Leedy Topics from 1923 until 1941. Premier published at least eleven issues of The Drummer from 1928 until the early 1930s. Ludwig & Ludwig, which later became Ludwig Drum Company and ultimately Ludwig Industries, published a minimum of forty Ludwig Drummer issues from the early 1920s until 1976. The most enduring of the three publications proved to be the Ludwig Drummer. Published intermittently for over fifty years, the Ludwig Drummer was the longest-running percussion magazine of the twentieth century. Each issue included a variety of articles about percussion which were written by the most celebrated teachers and performers of the time. Articles in the Ludwig Drummer focused on all areas of percussion performance and pedagogy, including percussion ensemble, orchestral techniques, marching percussion, drum set styles, and keyboard percussion. Reviews of the latest percussion music and recordings were also included in the Ludwig Drummer. In addition to articles and reviews, the Ludwig Drummer 3 served to advertise the broad variety of Ludwig products. Percussion instruments and accessories manufactured by Ludwig were advertised throughout each Ludwig Drummer issue. Advertisements ranged in length from a single line listing the product to several multi-colored pages. In addition to articles and advertisements, the Ludwig Drummer contained many rare photographs of amateur drum corps, professional players, and student percussionists at all levels of instruction. The photographs in the Ludwig Drummer represented diverse percussion activities, from the activities of the United States military bands to international percussion events. Photographs illustrated proper instrument adjustment, maintenance procedures, and methods of holding drum sticks and mallets. Since publication of the Ludwig Drummer was due in part to the financial stability of the Ludwig Drum Company, its appearance occurred during two separate periods of prosperity. The first series was printed from the early 1920s to 1948. The second series was published from 1961 through 1968 and included one issue in 1972 and one issue in 1976. Throughout

  • History of the Drum Set
History of the Drum Set The drum set is as American as baseball, hotdogs, and apple pie. The instrument as it currently exists has seen a great deal of evolution and development. From its infancy at the start of the 20 th century to the innovations that are currently taking place, it has developed into the most visible and widely used instruments in the percussion family. Late 1800’s Brass bands were the most common type of instrumental ensemble in the United States in the later half of the 19 th century. Every town in America had bandstands were concerts were held and perhaps the reason for their existence can be attributed in part to the Civil War. Every military unit had its own squad of musicians, usually formed according to locality. Occasionally some bands stayed together after the war, while others disbanded. Each brass band consisted of two or more drummers that played snare, bass, and cymbals. In addition to marching parade commitments, these bands sometimes moved “indoors” entertaining patrons in concert providing music for occasions such as picnics and town socials. When these groups moved inside, the standard instrumentation was cut down somewhat for practical reasons. Because of this, the need for two or more drummers decreased and resourceful inventions began to flourish. The concept of one drummer playing two or more rhythms was made possible through the creation of the snare drum stand and bass drum pedal. Before the snare stand, drummers would hang the drum from their shoulder with a strap or sling, or position the drum on a chair.

  • 40 Drum Rudiments with Video Examples
Drum rudiment 1 Drum rudiment In percussion music, a rudiment is one of the basic patterns used in rudimental drumming. These patterns of drum strokes can be combined in many ways to create music. History The origin of snare rudiments can be traced back to Swiss mercenaries armed with long polearms. The use of pikes in close formation required a great deal of coordination. The sound of the tabor was used to set the tempo and communicate commands with distinct drumming patterns. These drumming patterns became the basis of the snare drum rudiments. The first written rudiment goes back to the year 1612 in Basel, Switzerland.[1] The cradle of rudimental drumming is said to be France, where professional drummers became part of the King's honour guard in the 17th and 18th centuries. The craft was perfected during the reign of Napoleon I. Le Rigodon is one of the cornerstones of modern rudimental drumming.[1] There have been many attempts to formalize a standard list of snare drum rudiments. The National Association of Rudimental Drummers, an organization established to promote rudimental drumming, put forward a list of 13 essential rudiments, and later a second set of 13 to form the original 26. The Percussive Arts Society reorganized the first 26 and added another 14 to form the current 40 International Drum Rudiments. Currently, the International Association of Traditional Drummers is working to once again promote the original 26 rudiments. Today there are four main Rudimental Drumming cultures: Swiss Basler Trommeln, Scottish Pipe Drumming, American Ancient Drumming, and American Modern Drumming.

  • The Freddie Gruber Scholarship Fund in Memory of Buddy Rich and Nick Ceroli
The Freddie Gruber Scholarship Fund In Memory of Buddy Rich and Nick Ceroli Freddie Gruber began his drumming career in New York in the late 1940s. He played in the only big band to feature bebop sax innovator Charlie Parker, and he became close friends with Buddy Rich, a relationship that continued until Buddy’s passing in 1987. In the early ’60s Gruber played his way through Chicago and Las Vegas, eventually arriving in Los Angeles, where he became a key player in that city’s jazz scene. But Gruber soon discovered his true calling—teaching others how to play drums. Over the next forty years, Freddie’s students included a cross-section of drummers whose playing profoundly influenced the music of the times, among them John Guerin, Ian Wallace, Steve Smith, Dave Weckl, Mike Baird, Johnny “Vatos” Hernandez, David Bronson, Peter Erskine, Burleigh Drummond, and Neil Peart. One early student, Don Lombardi, founded the Drum Workshop company. Freddie had an unparalleled understanding of the physical “dance” involved in playing the instrument—the ergonomic relationship of the drummer to the drums. Without ever trying to disrupt a particular drummer’s “character,” he helped each student discover, express, and refine his own voice. One $2,500 prize will be awarded Eligibility: This annual, one year scholarship, is to assist a college student with tuition to an established, accredited institution of higher education, for the purpose of advanced study in the area of percussion, including but not limited to drumset. Scholarship is for one academic year, students may apply in subsequent years (no more than three years total).
