SCHOOL COUNSELING department

Notes from your School Counseling Department

For those Juniors who are attending Towle on a full-time basis, please join us at the Junior and Parent College Night! This event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2019 from 7 to 9 pm at Pike Creek Bible Church where we help families begin the dialogue of ‘what’s after high school?’

Please use Towle’s office doors to enter the building (i.e., do not come through the main doors of the church). Topics that will be discussed are college searches, college admissions and financial aid. This is a mandatory meeting for all Towle full-time junior families. Only the student and his/her parent may attend. No younger children except for nursing infants are welcome since there will be no childcare services provided. If you are a part-time junior family, you are welcome to attend this meeting for a fee of $25 (prior registration is required). Please contact Mrs. Kaliakin if you should have any questions. Thank you!

TO ALL SENIORS: Time waits for no one! Please keep a keen eye on your calendars – make note of college application deadlines. Keep in mind that Towle will be closed for Thanksgiving during the week of November 25th and then for from December 23, 2019 to January 5, 2020. Any Senior needing transcripts or letters of recommendations to be sent to colleges for late December or early January deadline dates must submit completed request forms by December 9, 2019. Remember to allow THREE working Mondays for teachers to write letters of recommendations. Don’t forget, as a courtesy, to supply the teachers with a stamped, addressed envelope to the college where the letter should be sent. Also, please remember to give me at least TWO Mondays’ notice to send transcripts to colleges.

If you are taking the SATs or the ACTs, please use the School Code of 080071 in order for Towle to receive a copy of your score report.

All Seniors and Juniors, watch out for those emails from “Towle Counseling”. Please also take note of the various posters and announcements hung in the connecting hallway. Announcements of College Open Houses, Scholarship and Volunteer Opportunities are posted.

Any questions, please contact Mrs. Kaliakin [email protected]. Thank you!

The Perfect Way to Celebrate National Peanut Butter Fudge Day TOWLE BRIDGE COMICS

By Megan Johnston

Everyone who likes sweets should be happy to hear about this! National Peanut Butter Fudge Day is celebrated on November 20th. While you can get fudge at every other store at the beach in the summer, it’s harder to come by in the winter. Why not celebrate with some homemade peanut butter fudge brownies?

Brownie Ingredients: -A box of brownie mix -Eggs -Oil -Water

Fudge Ingredients: -A pound of white chocolate candy coating -One cup creamy peanut butter -One cup chopped walnuts (optional) -Chocolate chips (optional)

To make these treats, first bake your brownies. While they’re cooking make the fudge. Use a saucepan and melt the coating on low-medium heat. Once melted, remove from heat and mix in the peanut butter and walnuts. Pour mixture into a pan (preferably about the size of your brownie pan) and put in the fridge until solid. If desired, add chocolate chips and/or chocolate drizzle to the top, then put in the fridge until solid. Once the fudge is solid enough to pick up and while the brownies are still warm, put them on top. This is why a pan the same size is recommended. The warm brownies should allow the fudge to warm up and attach, but if it doesn’t you can always cut your brownie, put fudge on it, and put it in the microwave for a few seconds. Enjoy!

National Doughnut Day Times Two

By Trevor Johnston

Do you know what’s better than one day a year to celebrate the doughnut? How about having two! One is celebrated on the first Friday in , and the second is celebrated on November 5th each year.

The first National Doughnut Day, which corresponds with the first Friday in June, was established by the Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938. Many people were still suffering from the Great Depression so the Salvation Army teamed up with local donut shops to donate a percentage of sales to different charities. The Salvation Army also celebrated this day as a way to remember their “Lassies” who were the Salvation Army women who went to the front lines in France during WWI to serve to American soldiers. They did this to cheer up the soldiers. As many as seven doughnuts could be cooked in oil in the inside of a soldier’s metal helmet.

Entenmann’s, a large American baking company, teams up with the Salvation Army each year to deliver donuts to more than 20,000 veterans.

The second National Doughnut Day is on November 5th each year. Although Entenmann’s does not participate on this day, others do by having donut eating contests and again, donating a percentage of their sales to charities. This second date was added likely because it is close to .

So, whether you love chocolate frosted, sugar- glazed, or jelly-filled doughnuts, remember the reason this wonder day started and thank both the Salvation Army and a veteran!

N E W S W O R T H Y Please join in congratulating Jade Wasgatt for her accomplishments in 4-H. Jade received a blue ribbon and a pin at the New Castle County 4-H Awards Event for having submitted a record book, and also for competing at the state level in her demonstration contest with her goat, Dakota. The big surprise for her was that she also received the 2019 Individual Community Service Award for the county! In addition to this lovely certificate, her name has been put on a plaque at the 4-H office! She is so honored by this distinction!

Jade enjoys being an officer in the Clover Quest 4-H club, helping to lead the club meetings, volunteering in service projects, showing animals and competing in events at the state fair, and also utilizing her work at Kranz Hill Farm in her 4-H endeavors. She fully enjoys the opportunities 4-H has to offer!

~Everything I Draw Comes to Life~

By Kaitlyn Czarnecki CONTINUATION OF AN ON-GOING

STORY STARTED IN OCTOBER’S ISSUE … BE SURE TO STAY TUNED … Just when I thought everything was going well! Hmmm.. I thought to myself. Then, an idea came to me. We have Art class today! If I work really hard...maybe I can learn how to draw some decorations. is only a week away, and creeping up fast. Maybe it won’t be thaat hard. I mean, how hard really IS it to draw some bats and spider webs? I’m good at drawing in general...so I mean, how hard can it really be? ~ I was halfway through school now. Lunch just ended. I only have to suffer through two more classes until I can go to art class. In my school we have art class as an extracurricular activity. In my old elementary school, we had it as a thing called a special. Gym, Art, Music and Library were all considered specials. But now, since I’m in middle school, the only “Specials” that I have to do is Gym and Health and I don’t think they’re very special. ~ Finally it was time to go to Art class. I raced to my locker and grabbed my sketchbook. After class I can ask the teacher if she can help me learn how to draw some Halloween stuff. I walked into class along with the other art students. “Hello class, and happy Halloween!” Mrs. Sherry smiled. “Hello, Mrs. Sherry,” everyone replied. “So today, class, we will be learning about shading!” Mrs. Sherry said. “Now, does everyone have their own set of oil chalk? If not, I have some extra sets you are welcome to borrow.” She smiled and walked over to the big walk-in closet that kept all of the art supplies. She pulled out some oil chalk sets. I pulled out my own. “Now, class, here is some paper for you to draw on.” She handed out some thick pieces of cream-colored paper to each one of us. “Now just draw what you think makes you happy, or something you like.” She turned to go sit back at her desk at the very edge of the room. ~ After class was over I walked up to her my drawing and oil chalk in my hand. “Uh, Mrs. Sherry?” I said. “Yes, Penny?” Mrs. Sherry said, leaning over her desk a bit to hear me. “Well, I’m having a Halloween party this week, and I wanna make some decorations for my party. But the thing is, I don’t really know how to draw that kind of stuff.” I shuffled my feet anxiously.

“Oh! Don’t worry about it. I will give you lessons. Starting tomorrow.” ~
