India Keen to Lure Foreign Stars Late City Edition The Island, Tuesday 8th August, 2006 Mahela keeps Sri Lanka in the hunt 27 by Rex Clementine Mahela Jayawardene played a deter- mined captain's knock as he gave Sri Lanka the edge over South Africa on the penultimate day of the second Test match, at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium in Colombo, yesterday. In the first three days of the Test, fortunes have fluctuated and it continued to do so yesterday, but Jayawardene's classic unbeaten 77 gave Sri Lanka the edge over the tourists to wrap it up 2-0. Sri Lanka has chased anything over 300 runs only once - nine years ago w,hen they were set 326 by Zimbabwe at the SSC - and the 352 the South Africans set was certainly a formidable one. The Sri Lankan captain, who probably is enjoy- ing the best form of his career, kept his side's chances alive on a pitch that has amazingly been consistent with its bounce. It was Sanath Jayasuriya who set Skipper Mahela things up for the hosts with a typically Jayawardene was aggressive 73 in 74 balls, bringing them Sanath back into the game after the early loss of in impressive Upul Tharanga for no score. The Pakistani captain persuaded two of his bowlers to bowl illegitimate deliveries at precise times of the match while he batted out a specific over without scoring a run. Gamblers with inside knowledge bet profitably on these particular occurrences. This was a watershed moment in international cricket that saw corrupt players swiftly exposed unlike the earlier conviction of the former and now deceased South African captain Hansie Cronje whose corruption was uncovered much

The first recognised Test Match, between sides from Australia and England, took place in 1877 though there is record of a match between the USA and Canada in 1844. Test Matches are now spread over 5 days with each side having two innings with three results possible, a win for either side or a draw. There can be between 1 and 7 matches in one ‘Test Series’ between the same countries. Matches were not always time limited and the last ‘timeless Test’ took place between South Africa and England in Durban in 1939.

This unique series combines aspects of the expanding study of sport in the global society, providing comprehensiveness and comparison under one editorial umbrella. It is particularly timely, with studies in the political, cultural, anthropological, ethnographic, social, economic, geographical and aesthetic elements of sport proliferating in institutions of higher education. Eric Hobsbawm once called sport one of the most significant practices of the late nineteenth century.
