16 ARCHBISHOP RIORDAN HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI MAGAZINE - FUTURE The WRITE Stuff

English Instructor Kim Loder Develops Foundational Writing Manual Present Teenagers may be typing hundreds of text messages per day, but good essay writing skills are still essential in the digital age. Leaving high school with a solid foundation in this area is a key outcome of a Riordan education. As part of the Archbishop Riordan English curriculum, students take Intro to Composition during the first semester of their freshman year. This is a foundation course for the remainder of their high school career where writing is a part of virtually every subject. English instructor Kim Loder has taken the lead to formalize the way expository writing, or writing that explains a subject, is taught. During her 40-year teaching career she used many fine grammar and writing books but found they lacked a unifying framework of how these elements could be taught sequentially. This led her to create a comprehensive instructional manual for teachers that includes lesson plans, handouts, objectives and assessments. Any instructor can adapt the manual to the theme of his or her class. With the idea that better writing begins at the sentence level, this manual takes a multi-sensory approach—incorporating visual, auditory, and kinesthetic elements—that supports various learning styles. “We learn best and make the best progress when we have understanding through all of our senses,” Loder noted. The text proposes specific ways to make the learning more personal and less abstract. Developing a manual of this type takes a collaborative approach. It is currently in its beta version, with feedback expected from freshman year English teachers after the first semester of use. The next step is to edit the workbook to make improvements where needed. Eventually, the goal is to “formally engage teachers across all departments on how the lessons and elements of the manual can help improve student writing at any level,” said Loder. “As a faculty we are constantly assessing the needs of our students and how we can adapt our curriculum, particulary with regard to the many diverse learning styles we have at Riordan,” said Loder. “This manual, developed to be scaleable, will help us do just that when it comes to writing.” The manual is currently available in hard copy and pdf formats; future editions will be available in ebook.

ARCHBISHOP RIORDAN HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI MAGAZINE - FUTURE 17 Crusader Roundup Fall for Grandparents at Riordan

Where in the world are these Crusaders?

Riordan Parent and Board Member Kelvin Quan (above left) shared this photo in front of the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Austria. Quan and his family visited their daughter who was studying abroad during her junior year of college.

Seniors Christian Marquez, Connor Laughlin, and Nestor Fernandez (pictured above right, l-r, in the Plaza de España) journeyed to Sevilla, Spain last summer as part of the Centro Mundolengua Program. In addition to participating in an intensive Spanish language immersion pro- gram, these Crusaders embraced la vida Española, including living with a Spanish family, learning flamenco, watching World Cup Soccer, and learning about all aspects of Spanish culture. They also traveled to other parts of Spain and Portugal, and experienced the joys and pitfalls of traveling and living abroad. 18 ARCHBISHOP RIORDAN HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI MAGAZINE - FUTURE Athletics News

ARCHBISHOP RIORDAN HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI MAGAZINE - FUTURE 19 2014 Graduation

Class of 2014 Takes off!

On May 23, 2014, Archbishop Riordan High School presented 128 diplomas to members of the Class of 2014. Rafael Guerrero represented his class as valedictorian (see an excerpt from his speech below), and the salutatorian speaker was Student Body President Eric Diaz.

The week prior to graduation, Riordan’s Skyline Band, made up from students from the Boarding Program, toasted the Class of 2014 with a special musical performance in Lindland Theatre, causing many students to declare it the best Senior Farewell in school history. To watch the video, visit www.youtube.com/archbishopriordan.

“We stand here today at the top—poised, developed, and determined: in full view of the journey that is yet to come. With every victory at our backs and every defeated obstacle in our wake, we face our friends, family, and teachers today with four long and challeng- ing years glistening in our cheeky, confident smiles... I confess to you all, behind this clumsy looking grin and valiant purple robes, I am intimidated. But, for all it’s worth, I am not afraid. Brotherhood means never taking the next big step alone.”

A Message from the Board of Trustees

Dear Fellow Graduates and Supporters of Archbishop Riordan High School,

I am pleased to report that Riordan is on a roll! Over the past three years, our incoming freshman class has averaged 190 new Crusaders. If a comparable class is enrolled next year, Riordan will be at capacity and the student body will be 30% larger than it was six years ago. This is a testimony to the value of a Riordan education, the excellence and commitment of our faculty, and the hard work of the Admissions team and Administrative staff. Parent involvement is at an all-time high too, with a record number from current classes committing to the Parent Pledge Program.

Complementing strong enrollment will be the full repayment by year-end 2015 of $2.8 million in debt. These funds were borrowed to repair the heating system in 2010 and renovate the Marianist residence in 2011, which now houses our highly successful International Boarding Program. The combination of additional tuition revenue, reduced loan payments, and your continued support will give Riordan the ability to modernize and expand our academic and athletic facilities and enhance financial assistance to qualified students.

More good news! Over the last five years, nearly 100% of Riordan graduates have been accepted to college, with 77% going on to four-year institutions from the Class of 2014. In the past five years students have been accepted into Stanford, West Point Prep, NYU, Notre Dame, Middlebury, USC, UC Berkeley, UCLA, other UC and California State Schools, and many other fine institutions. Significantly, about one-half of graduating seniors were the first in their family to attend college.

Riordan has delivered these outstanding results while serving a student body that truly reflects the social and economic diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area. In recent years the school has welcomed an increasing number of current students who are sons of Riordan alumni. Throughout its 65-year history, Riordan has educated young men in mind, body, and spirit, and with your help we will continue to provide the same outstanding opportunity to future generations.

The Archbishop Riordan High School Board of Trustees has launched a strategic planning process to develop an optimistic and energetic vision for the future of Riordan. Working together with alumni, faculty, parents, students, and friends we will implement a comprehensive strategic plan to position Riordan for continued success and future growth. We welcome your support and participation! Please reach out to the President’s Office or any trustee if you wish to be involved.

My wife Sally and I have been blessed in many ways, and we are proud to give back by investing in Riordan’s future. We enthusiastically encourage you to join us in this endeavor.

Thank you for your continued support of Riordan.

Sincerely,

Michael Mayer ‘71 Chair, Board of Trustees
