Community initiatives in Chiswick

Residents in Chiswick have transformed a rundown area close to Chiswick Common during a weekend cleaning blitz that took place on September 8-10 2006 which was organised by Community Safety Partnership, a collaboration of organisations, including Hounslow Council and Hounslow Police.. Specific work included graffiti removal from an alleyway and car park in Bond Street, and the re-painting of a children’s playground in Clifton Gardens. Members of Chiswick Soka Gakkai International, a lay Buddhist organisation, removed graffiti from a mural at the playground and restored it to its former state. Cllr Phil Andrews, lead member for community safety, took part in the Chiswick clean-up commenting that the residents of Chiswick ‘made a small but significant difference to their community’

Standardised Mortality Ratios (SMRs): compare death rates in an area to an average death rate for a standard population. They are calculated so that differences between areas cannot be attributed to different age structures of the populations. The SMR is the ratio of the number of observed deaths in an area to the number of expected deaths in an area for the age of the population (estimated based on the rate in a standard population e.g England), multiplied by 100. Areas with an SMR greater than 100 have a higher death rate than the standard population, and areas with an SMR less than 100 have a lower death rate.

Confidence intervals: are a means for stating numerically the level of confidence about a result. A 95% confidence interval means there is a 95% probability that the true value will lie between these limits.
