Then try your luck on the Chocolate Wheel, with many prizes on offer generously donated Youth Today.. Have you ever wondered what on earth is happening to this generation of youth today? Just switch on the tele and you will see rebellious youth doing terrible things - getting high and drunk at schoolies, bashing people, and committing crimes. You have probably asked yourself, “What will the world look like for future generations when this current generation of youth are leading it? Is there any hope?”. Well, if you have ever asked these questions about youth, you are not alone. Below is a quote from a famous scholar, indicting the youth of his day: “I see no hope for the future of our people if we are dependant on the frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words... When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly disrespectful”. Who was this famous poet and scholar? Hesiod, from the 8th Century BC. From this we might conclude, that society’s views on youth have not changed for centuries. But are these stereotypes that portray ALL youth as ‘rebellious criminals’ correct? If so, are we as a society partly to blame for setting the ‘bar of expectations’ so dangerously low, that our teenagers have no choice but to meet those low expectations? And who has the final word on who our young people are and should be? I believe that all these questions about my generation are answered in Jesus. The Bible says in 1 Timothy 4:12: “You are young, but don’t let anyone treat you as if you are not important. Be an example to show the believers how they should live. Show them by what you say, by the way you live, by your love, by your faith, and by your pure life.” ERV This gives me hope, as the one person who has the ultimate say in who we are and should be - God Himself - believes in young people! And, not only does He value young people and believe they can change the world for good, but He also believes that they can be an example to people of all ages in the way they conduct themselves and serve others. What a contrast this is to the media’s stereotypical portrayal of pot smokin’, beer chuggin’, cellphone addicts we call ‘teenagers’. That, friends, is why we as Christian youth workers see such value in youth, and desire to see their God- given potential to achieve great things fulfilled. And so we are excited to invest our time, energy and resources into Norfolks Youth in 2016. Is there any hope for young people? Yes, His name is Jesus!
