THE TROPHY

Commissioned by the two national sporting organisations in 2010, the Constellation Cup captures the aspirations of each nation on the Netball court. Fashioned as a diamond encrusted, silver champagne chalice, the Cup stands for achievement, optimism and timelessness. The series to determine who holds the Constellation Cup is contested annually between the trans-Tasman rivals played across both countries. The trophy was designed and manufactured by Australian Michael Wilson.

The Constellation Cup is comprised of Sterling Silver, 101 white and champagne brilliant-cut diamonds and 5000-year-old ebonised ancient Murray River Red Gum. The display case was designed and crafted by Vic Matthews of and is made of Black Maire, New Zealand’s hardest wood. HOW THE TROPHY IS DECIDED

The Constellation Cup is a best of four series, played in October, with all matches requiring an outright result. If the Test Series is level with an equal number of wins to each country, the winner of the Series will be decided by the greater goal percentage (to two decimal places). Goal % = total goals scored / total goals scored against x 100 If the teams continue to be tied following the calculation of goal percentage, goal difference will be applied. If goal difference is not able to separate the teams, the highest number of goals scored for will be taken into account to ascertain the winner of the Constellation Cup. The Silver Ferns are looking to consolidate their stunning Netball World Cup win during this month’s Cadbury Netball Series where the Constellation Cup is up for grabs. World netball’s greatest rivalry once gain takes centre stage, the 2019 edition of the Constellation Cup having added spice after the Silver Ferns prevailed 52-51 over the Australian Diamonds in the World Cup final in July. ``We cannot rest on our laurels and think one cup is enough,’’ coach Noeline Taurua said of the Silver Ferns intent ahead of the keenly awaited re-match. The Silver Ferns have not won the impressive-looking Constellation Cup, which features 101 encrusted diamonds, since 2012, in the annual series which began in 2010. Taurua has retained 11 of her champion team, with just two new faces being added to the successful mix. Rising young defender Michaela Sokolich- Beatson, who was on standby for the Silver Ferns during the World Cup, comes in for the legendary Casey Kopua, who has retired while another young gun, shooter Maia Wilson comes in for the Australian leg of the series. Two games will be played in New Zealand (Christchurch and Auckland) followed by two in (Sydney and Perth). With assistant coach Deb Fuller unavailable for this series, the Silver Ferns will have two specialist coaches on board for the Constellation Cup. Former Silver Ferns coach and player Yvonne Willering, who was a specialist coach during the World Cup build-up, will once again be on hand to lend her experience. Former Thunderbirds coach and current General Manager of Women’s Sport at Collingwood, the highly regarded and well-credentialled Jane Woodlands-Thompson will also join the Silver Ferns camp for the Constellation Cup. Woodlands-Thompson is familiar with the New Zealand game and set-up after spending time with the as a coaching consultant. Winning the World Cup has lifted the Silver Ferns from fourth to No. 2 in the world while Australia have retained their No. 1 ranking. The Diamonds have named nine of their World Cup team for the Cadbury Netball Series with shooter Tegan Philip and midcourter Ash Brazill returning to the Australian line-up while midcourter Laura Scherian and defender Maddy Turner are new to the fold.
