Saint John Vianney

Last week in the Church calendar we had on August 4th, St. John Vianney. He is the patron of parish priests, so an important saint for me and for many priests of the Archdiocese that serve in throughout the Archdiocese. St. John Vianney was born in in 1786. He was or- dained a priest at the age of 29. He struggled in the academic studies to be a priest, including the study of Latin. So even though not an outstanding student, he persevered and would come to demon- strate many gifts in service as a priest.

St. John Vianney served in the parish in Ars for 42 years. He is often referred to as the Curè of Ars (meaning the priest of Ars). He was known for his dedication and commitment in serving his parish. In his later years, he became known as a great , hearing tirelessly confessions for hours a day. He wanted the good for his parishioners. He also faced struggles as well, including en- during attacks from the enemy, the Devil, for most of his priesthood. So it was not easy for him. But once again he persevered. He died in the year 1859 and was canonized a saint in 1925.

St. John Vianney provides a good role model for parish priests. Priests need prayers. It was good to focus on him this past week and particularly to seek his intercession for myself and the other parish priests of the Archdiocese.

Missionary Speaker From Winnebago Is Coming

Next weekend, we will host a missionary to speak about their work of bringing the message of Christ to the Poor. This missionary comes not from Africa or South America, but from Nebraska! The St. Augustine Indian Mission has been serving the needs of American Indians on the Omaha and Winnebago Reservations since 1909. St. Katharine Drexel, the first American-born saint, was our foundress. Fr. Mark Beran works at the Mission and will share his stories about how St. Augustine Mission makes a difference in the lives of the Indian children who attend his school. Do not miss this great opportunity to share in the missionary work of the Catholic Church right in our own country. St. Augustine can be reached by phone at (402)878-2402; by mail at St. Augustine Indian Mission P.O. Box GG, Winnebago, NE 68071 or on the web at www.staugustinemission.org if you have any questions or would like to learn more about St. Augustine Indian Mission.
