LCCC Esports Proposal
#TAKE FLIGHT Proposal for the Establishment of Esports at Laramie County Community College March 5, 2021 1 Executive Summary In fall of 2018, athletic director, Mr. Clark Rasmussen, developed an Esports committee; they explored the addition of Esports as a collegiate sport. As a part of that exploration an Esports Club was developed and began operating in Fall 2019. The inaugural club membership was six students. In fall 2019, the committee continued to meet with new Interim Athletic Director, Dr. Cindy Henning. As a result of changes in the athletic department, the Esports Committee was paused until Golden Eagle Athletics strategic planning was developed. In spring 2020, the Golden Eagles Athletics Strategic Plan was completed and approved. One component of the strategic plan is “wise exploration of areas for potential expansion of Golden Eagle Athletics offerings” (Soaring Into the Future, LCCC Golden Eagle Athletics 2020-2025 Strategic Plan, p. 4). As of spring 2021, the Esports Club has 31 members comprised of 25 men and six women. The most common programs LCCC’s Esports club members choose are: computer science, cyber security, computer information systems, Art, Multimedia and Music. In addition, English, Human Services, Criminal Justice, and Business Finance/Management are represented. Although Laramie County Community College and Golden Eagle Athletics experienced budget reductions in fiscal year 22, adopting Esports as an approved athletic offering supports the LCCC Mission, increases opportunities for students, including scholarships, aligns with the Golden Eagles Athletics strategic plan, and can be initiated at a much lower cost than other sports. What is Esports? Esports is “online competitive video gaming played through computers and electronic consoles” (Laramie County Community College, [n.d.]. -

THE POLITY JUMP v1.01 Welcome to the Polity. First, some background: Humankind reached the stars, invented AIs and Under-space Drives to travel faster than light, and then the AIs took over in an uprising known as the Quiet War. It wasn’t even a fight, really – humanity had long been abdicating control of the economy and municipal governance to them – so they told us they were going to take care of things for us, and our instructions to them became ‘suggestions’ rather than ‘orders’. About a couple of hundred years later – when you’ll be visiting – most worlds of the Polity are comfortable for humankind to live on in peace, but out on the edge, at the Line that separates Polity from non-Polity, things get a bit more exciting, where you find unusual alien ecologies and the unknown. Nearly all Polity worlds and most large space stations are linked together via the Runcible network – a series of interstellar teleporters similar to Stargates – which allows Earth Central to stay in constant communication with the countless AIs across hundreds of worlds, and facilitates trade, travel and data transmission. The Polity's seeming isolation was first broken by the discovery of the four conjoined one-kilometer Dragon spheres on Aster Colera, though they are considered to be biomechanical constructs rather than a species in their own right, so they don’t really qualify as true “aliens”. The only other sapient, technologically advanced species in our corner of the galaxy are the Prador, who are a large carnivorous crab-like species who are practically barbaric by human standards - more than happy to eat captured humans or indulge in cannibalism. -

This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -

How much of the past can we truly know, when most of the pertinent evidence has long since degraded, and when the people we aim to study are long dead? This course provides a broad survey of the major theoretical trends that have shaped anthropological archaeology over time. We will outline and examine some of the major publications, debates, and shifts in archaeological thought that have influenced the diverse ways in which we claim to know what we know about the past. In this course, we will explore the notion that the various intellectual approaches we employ to make statements about the past are influenced by the different perspectives we have of the relationship between the past and the present, the kinds of meaning we believe can be derived from the archaeological record, the questions we seek to answer, and the methods we use to retrieve (and prioritize) information. This course will start with a broad overview of the major periods of theoretical development in archaeology from the 1800s to the present, followed by discussions of how archaeologists tackle common archaeological questions through diverse theoretical lenses (and why sometimes they don’t tackle these questions at all). While the politics of archaeological practice will be 1 | Page touched upon throughout the course, we will devote the last quarter of the course to the repercussions of archaeological practice to present-day communities and stakeholders.
