Headteacher’s Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

I am sure you are only too aware, school life is very busy. At Rosemellin, determined to make sure we are teaching our children in the very best way possible, we are continuing to improve and really pleased with the progress we are making. There have been many changes and each week, I will take the time to keep parents in the loop with what has been the focus of staff’s energies and attention.

We are improving our outside areas, knowing that children learn best when they are engaged and happy in what they are doing. There have been many articles in the papers recently emphasising how important it is that children get out and about in the natural world. Currently, we are improving the free flow area outside of our Reception classes. The Early Years Foundation Stage Lead, Mrs Bellamy, is working with Sandie Hawkey - a Local Authority consultant of many years’ standing, and passionate about outdoor learning - to develop this area. Our intent is that we keep it as natural as possible so that the children can bring their imaginations to the spaces and the materials provided and have their curiosity provoked.

A fence has been put up so that it clearly defines the area; planting has taken place to create a sensory garden with lavender etc.; a mud kitchen area has been made and various other things. We are now beginning to work to screen this area and our wildlife area with natural planting so that, when our children are learning and playing in it, it feels as though they are in a natural area, surrounded by wildlife.

We have worked on reworking the Quiet Area in Y3/4 having the pagoda refreshed, painted and mended. Bark chippings have been added to the area so the children can access this space when the weather is good and perhaps the children would prefer to sit and chat.

We are keeping our fingers crossed that the weather begins to dry up as Mr Rice and Mrs Paul have worked hard to secure a lottery funding bid in order that we can lay a running track on our field. We are very excited about this change and plan to use it to improve the physical fitness of our children - and staff! - by using it in PE lessons but also exploring the possibility of incorporating it into our daily provision.

Next week, we will keep you up to date regarding the work that is going into our Reading provision and making sure our school has the resources it needs to deliver quality first teaching. Have a really happy weekend and ...look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

Mrs Finn
