MASS POOR PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY AND MARCH ON WASHINGTON The Poor People’s campaign recently announced an assembly and march in Washington. D.C. on June 20. On this anniversary of the launch of the Poor People’s Campaign in 1967, we all must be more urgently committed than ever to building a broad and deep national moral movement – rooted in the leadership of poor people – to unite our country from the bottom up. The Mission and Social Justice Commission is committed to this movement and our church would like to organize a group to join The Poor People’s Campaign in Washington, D.C. this summer. To help with our planning of this mass action, please contact [email protected] if you’re interested in participating.

HOLY DAYS FOR JUSTICE God’s mission for justice is holy and, consequently, the church’s commitment to justice is also holy. A critical aspect of our faith is joining the holy work of God in transforming the oppressive structures of our world. Throughout 2020, as we seek to live together in the covenantal community, on critical historic dates, our Mission and Social Justice team will offer opportunities for members of our community to take bold and powerful actions towards addressing cries for justice in our world. More details concerning these Holy Days are forthcoming. To express an interest in making the commitment to volunteer, please contact [email protected].

COUNT AND BE COUNTED IN 2020 - HERE’S WHY (AND HOW) The Men’s Class serves the members, congregation, and community of Riverside through spiritual, educational, and fellowship programs that encourage a more just & equitable society.

Riverside’s “Lift Every Voice and Vote” initiative wants us - and our neighbors - to count and be counted in 2020. This joint initiative of Riverside’s Mission and Social Justice (MSJ) and Education Commissions will be equipping us to do just that. How? Through voter registration, protection, and mobilization, and through work for 100 percent participation in the 2020 Census. In the coming weeks, watch for opportunities for training and action. Why? Voting is fundamentally important in our democracy. But too many people eligible to vote aren’t registered, too many voters have been disenfranchised, and too many people eligible to vote don’t vote. As for the Census, full participation ensures fair allocation of government dollars and seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, among other things. The government doesn’t work without participation. Count and be counted! Learn more/get involved. Contacts: Rueben Martinez, [email protected] and Sumati Devadutt, [email protected]

SOCIAL JUSTICE SPOTLIGHT Last month, our Men’s Class hosted an amazing program where we tackled a series of difficult questions concerning the future challenges Christianity will face; particularly how faith communities must adapt to both technological advances and political challenges to thrive in our ever-changing culture. This was an excellent kick-off to the amazing work our Men’s Class hopes to continue in 2020.

In January, we kicked off the historic Martin Luther King, Jr., weekend by donating tickets to over 200 students from local schools to visit our church on a field trip to enjoy a play entitled, “Turning 15 o the Road to Freedom,” which is a story about Lynda Blackmon who was the youngest person to march from Selma to Montgomery with Dr. King in 1965.

Afterwards, students participated in a Question & Answer session with Mrs. Blackmon; members of our Lift Every Voice and Vote Ministry spoke with them about the importance of civic engagement (to include getting everyone committed to participating in the census and helping high school juniors and seniors register to vote); and Jeremiah Drake from our Theatre of the Oppressed ministry led the group through some creative theatre exercises to promote social and political change.

2020 COMMITMENT CARDS NOW AVAILABLE How will you honor the 90th anniversary with your financial giving?

Many Riversiders make a written commitment to financially support, maintain, and strengthen the church. Discerning and declaring your annual giving commitment with a commitment card - and then honoring your commitment throughout the year - can be a meaning- ful spiritual practice of stewardship. If a gift commitment is already part of your practice, please consider increasing your gift this year as a way to deepen your faith and connection to this community. We especially encourage establishing an automatic recurring gift through your credit card or bank account.

Commitment cards are available in the Welcome Center, at the back of the Nave, and on the website. If you would like to discuss your annual giving, please contact Kelsey Scott at [email protected] or 212-870-6810. Thank you for your support of our programs and ministries.

Romans 12:2 says: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Are you ready to put on your creative thinking hats and imagine the next 90 years of Riverside? As we celebrate our rich 90-year history throughout 2020, the Riverside Development Committee (RDC) is setting the stage to imagine the art of the possible with “The Next 90” campaign. The campaign joins up all the critical paths that facilitates the development of the plan that best leverages our real estate, assets and resources. The RDC – along with you the members and community stakeholders – will create a shared vision that combines money with mission and achieves both our social justice objectives and financial sustainability.

THE NEXT 90 SPEAKER SERIES This February we kick off our monthly Next 90 Speaker Series. Join members of our community as we begin to think about and discuss how we might use social enterprise to address big justice issues we face in our city such as hunger and poor nutrition, lack of vocational opportu- nity, lack of affordable housing, mass incarceration, and health disparities.

FOOD JUSTICE WORK GROUP In December, members of the Food Justice Work Group visited the Bargain Grocery, operated by the Compassion Coalition, in Utica, NY. This retail outlet capitalizes on waste and inefficiencies in the food supply chain by purchasing food at significantly discounted wholesale prices which enables its community to purchase food 30% below the average retail price in the region. In addition to providing low cost groceries and free-food, the revenues from the store fund a wide variety of services to low income people and students in the Utica community. You can learn more about the Compassion Coalition’s Bargain Grocery at distributehope.org. HOSPITALITY WORK GROUP The Hospitality Work Group is pleased to report that our new tours have been very well received – and without any paid advertising! The tours have been featured in several local media outlets, such as NY1, CBS2, and the 6sqft blog. The workgroup is now looking for ways to enhance the tours before launching a full-scale publicity effort in the spring. In addition to generating revenue, we are exploring ways to tie this to our growing online ministry. In the coming months, we will also be exploring ways to expand Riverside’s cultural offerings to expand the reach of our ministry while growing revenues. We are eager to have interested members of the congregation join us as we develop these exciting ideas.

REAL ESTATE ASSESSMENT SUBCOMMITTEE We recently visited two faith-based organizations building housing in order to improve their financial position, while also considering the needs of the communities they serve. During the site visits, we learned how these organizations engaged the community, local politicians, congregations and constituents in order to create housing developments that align with their mission and goals. During these meetings, we probed the key considerations that went into critical decisions and milestones and timelines in accomplishing goals. We were informed of the ways congregation/constituents as well as the community at large were kept informed. As we continue to embark on our fact-finding mission, we are concurrently assessing Riverside’s property. To that end, we’ve recently commissioned a zoning study of our land to determine the opportunities and constraints of our site. We’ll report back with our findings. GREENING SUBCOMMITTEE Our subcommittee is tasked with the mission of assisting in greening our church and engaging our community in reducing our carbon foot- print, while providing greater services to our community. In early January, we had the great opportunity to meet with representatives of the Yale Divinity School to learn about the process that was used to green the school’s campus. We learned a great deal! In fact, far too much to publish in this short update. So we will be inviting guest speakers from our meeting to come to Riverside to educate the congregation on opportunities to further our mission of greening of our church. We will keep you posted.
