With quarterbacks firing laser-like passes to a bevy of aesthetically gifted wide receivers, it’s no surprise that the NFL’s aerial attack has captured the attention of fans from coast to coast. But though the game in the air may be at a fever pitch of excitement, the league’s talented corps of running backs has more than made its presence felt in the modern-day NFL. And according to some, their contributions have never been more important. “I’ll never back off the belief that the running game is crucial to success,” says ESPN’s MERRIL HOGE, who spent 1987-94 as a running back with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears. “The running game and running backs are crucial. Being able to run the football and to stop the run are the foundations of the game.” Consider the 2003 season, which was a resounding success for the guys who unmercifully pounded the ball and helped their teams win the old-fashioned way – on the ground. Last year, there were 151 100-yard individual rushing games, the most all-time. There were six 1,500-yard rushers and four 1,600-yard rushers – the most ever in a single season. And for only the second time in history (1998), two players – Baltimore’s JAMAL LEWIS and Green Bay’s AHMAN GREEN – rushed for 1,800 yards. Plus, five players went over 2,000 scrimmage yards, the most ever. “I felt that at the end of last year we may have been watching the best group of NFL running backs to ever play the game at one time,” Hoge says.

What he said was that Barry Sanders was “the greatest runner of all time.” Maybe he said “greatest ever.” I was yukking too much to get every nuance. But I’m sure he added an est on to great. Well, as anyone over the age of 40 (except John Madden) knows, there’s been at least one -- and arguably, several -- greater than Sanders. Not that Barry isn’t one of the best. I don’t think anyone will complain if he goes into the Pro Football Hall of Fame the first year he’s eligible. But the greatest? Get real! Even this season, when Sanders is having a career year, some coaches might prefer having Terrell Davis or Jerome Bettis in their backfield. A couple of years ago, I’m sure a lot of them would have preferred Emmitt Smith. Neither Davis, Bettis, nor Smith can dodge or weave with Sanders, and I think he might win a straightaway dash too. But what they can do better than the Lion star is keep drives going. They are big and burly, and when they cradle a football in their well-muscled arms you can be reasonably certain they will gain some yards -- on average, nearly five. Sanders may go seven to a dozen downs mixing three-yard gains with three-yard losses. That means that three or four Lions’ drives could go three-and-out.

But as the throng in Civic Center Park cheered quarterback John Elway’s successful quest for the Lombardi Trophy on that winter afternoon back in ’98, and a triumphant Pat Bowlen raised his hands in salute to the raucous crowd, a little blonde girl, no more than 8 years old at the time, stood stoically alongside the team’s owner, her arms snugly folded across her tiny chest, in a serious pose almost identical to one often struck by her father during pensive moods. But regardless of the accuracy of the details, that's how Thanksgiving Day is seen by Americans -- except Detroiters. They may have most of the same images as everyone else, but with a new twist that began in 1934. That's when Detroiters and their outstate Michigan compatriots found themselves at the dawn of an unplanned behavior modification, courtesy of George A. "Dick" Richards, owner of the city's new entry in the National Football League: The Detroit Lions.     THE COFFIN CORNER, Vol. 19, No. 6 (1997) PRO FOOTBALL'S "WORST TO FIRST" By Mark Speck Much has been written the past few years about baseball teams going from worst to first in one season. Teams that eschewed the normal "rebuilding process" to rebound in one year instead of two or three or more. The 1991 Twins and Braves and the 1997 Giants are two of the teams that have done it, rising from last place to a division or league crown in just one season. The question remains, has this phenomenon ever happened in pro football? Have any football teams managed to capture lightning in a jar and rise from the outhouse to the penthouse in one season? The answer is yes (otherwise you wouldn't be reading this article right now). Amazingly, this feat has actually been more prevalent in pro football than in baseball. In the last 30 years, starting with the 1967 Houston Oilers, it has occurred fourteen times. Several franchises have even managed to accomplish the feat more than once. Rebuilding a losing franchise usually takes several years. It took Chuck Noll four years to turn around the Steelers, Weeb Ewbank five years to revive the Jets. Bill Walsh made the 49ers into winners in his third season, Jimmy Johnson his Cowboys the same length of time. But some football teams are a little more impatient, it seems, and turn it around in one season. Some of these resurgences have been one year affairs, where a team has risen to the top and then sank just as fast.
