Remembering ANTHONY 14 Remembering ANTHONY MASONby Dennis D’Agostino No one could have known that a Knicks legend Anthony Mason, pride of Queens and Springfield would be born in the stifling heat of a cramped Gardens High, had bounced around a little bit summer gym in the Catskill Mountains. overseas and had already played bits of seasons with But it was there, over just a few days in July of the Nets and Nuggets. In 1995, he became the first Knick ever to win the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award. The following year, thrust into the starting lineup for all 82 games, he rang up a League-leading 3,457 total minutes, still a franchise record. That same season, his speed and ball-handling skills enabled him to be the first player ever called a “point forward”, a term devised by then-head coach Don Nelson. Mase was dealt to Charlotte in 1996 in the deal that brought Larry Johnson to the Knicks as part of Ernie Grunfeld’s massive team makeover that would lead to the ’99 East title. DEVELOPING THE MULTIDIMENSIONAL POSITION 4, ANDERS SOMMER 2 Introduction The power forward position seems to be in a very interesting evolution these years. Different types of players fill the position giving the lineups completely different looks and characteristics. And it’s probably the position with the most adjusted definitions; ‘point-forward’, ‘stretch-4’, ‘combo-forward’, ‘shooting-forward’ and as defined by Drvaric (2017) the most modern type of power forward; ‘the multidimensional position 4’. Currently, two long ivory-white players from Northern Europe, just in their early twenties, are taking the basketball world by storm. Kristaps Porzingis and Lauri Markkanen are bringing a combination of length and shooting stroke to the NBA that only Kevin Durant can compare to. But they are more than just tall skinny shooters. They are taking the skill set of +210cm players to a whole new level and redefine the common perception of a power forward.

It does take a combination of will and skill, but more importantly is team play and defense, two aspects of the game not always associated with the sport on the AAU level. But, that so-called dirty work on the defensive end, along with an often-difficult to accomplish team chemistry on offense once again proved to be the winning formula for most of the teams in the 20th edition of the prestigious event held in New York's Capital Region over Memorial Day Weekend. No one said it better that Pat McGlynn, coach of the Gold Bracket title at the 17-under age division. "We've got 10 hillbillies who all know what counts in events like this," said McGlynn. "These kids all came here just to play basketball." PAGE | 1 And so they did, and they did it well. The York Ballers were particularly proficient on the defensive end, limiting its three opponents to a tournament-low 70 total points in their three pool-round games and not many more in the championship round. Platinum Bracket champion at the 17-under division, the New York Havoc squad, similarly played a team-first style to find their stride and capture a title.

  • NBA Returns for a Break-Neck Finish to Regular Season
Sports42 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2017 NBA legend Yao Ming named Chinese basketball chief BEIJING: NBA Hall of Famer Yao Ming called for “urgent” reform and said he was facing a multitude of problems as he was elected president of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) yesterday. The giant former Houston Rockets centre, 36, arrives at the post as China searches for new superstars and more glory days for its national team, which has largely stalled since his retirement in 2011. Yao, the first league head not drawn from government ranks, has long advocated reform of how basket- ball is run in his country, which has failed to produce anyone close to his calibre. “At the moment, the most urgent matter is the reform of the CBA, which we must set on a virtuous cycle that will increase our influence and vitality, and bring new ideas to the fore,” he told a news conference in Beijing. “The biggest problem is that there is no ‘biggest problem’. The problems are everywhere. I believe this is a common thing to encounter in the process of reform.” He did not give specifics. Forecasting Most Valuable Players of the National Basketball Association. (Under the direction of DR. TAO HONG) This thesis aims at developing models that would accurately forecast the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the National Basketball Association (NBA). R programming language was used in this study to implement different techniques, such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), K- Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Linear Regression Models (LRM). NBA statistics were extracted from all of the past MVP recipients and the top five runner-up MVP candidates from the last ten seasons (2009-2019). The objective is to forecast the Point Total Ratio (PTR) for MVP during the regular season. Seven different underlying models were created and applied to the three techniques in order to produce potential outputs for the 2018-19 season. The best models were then selected and optimized to form the MVP forecasting algorithm, which was validated by predicting the MVP of the 2019-20 season. Ultimately, two underlying models were most robust under the LRM framework, which is considered the champion approach. As a result, two combination models were constructed based on the champion approach and proved to be most efficient.

The NBA is one of the world’s most profitable organizations, raking in billions of dollars annually as a result of the popularity of its teams and their players. The NBA is, at every level, a lucrative business model for the league itself, for the individual teams, for the league’s developmental teams, and for the venues paid to host and manage events.
