If you know James Sprankle, then you know just why he would want to do it. After all, the former Sanibel resident has travelled three times to Costa Rica to go surfing. On one of those occasions, he camped in the wilderness for more than a month throughout the Nicoya Peninsula, just south of Nicaragua. He shared a tent with scorpions, the surrounding jungle with howler monkeys and the local rivers with saltwater crocodiles. In 2007, Sprankle spent two weeks in Venezuela just to visit a girl. Oddly enough, it reminded me of Sanibel.” Sprankle and his Mongol Rally teammate, Sean Miller, will take part in the 10,000-mile ultramarathon, which begins at Goodwood Circuit in Chichester, England on July 14 and ends in Ulan Bator, Mongolia around August 10. The duo have named their Mongol Rally partnership The Goat Rodeo. In addition to raising money for the rally’s dedicated charity, The Lotus Children’s Centre Charitable Trust, Sprankle and Miller have selected to support Doctors Without Borders. Asked which countries or places he was most interested in visiting during the Mongol Rally, Sprankle answered with an enthusiastic, “Everywhere!” “I guess the Altai Mountains are what I’m most looking forward to seeing. The northernmost part of a chain of mountain ranges that include the Tian Shan and Himalayas, the Altais traverse the borders of Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia,” he added. “I really hope to see a significant amount of Cold War relics – old statues of Lenin and rusty military hardware are in order.” The Mongol Rally route, from Chichester, England to Ulan Bator, Mongolia image courtesy Google Earth continued on page 30
