From the desk of Mark Wederell, General Manager… It’s great to be back in New Zealand, I had a really relaxing holiday in Koh Samui. Thanks to Noela for putting some of my holiday snaps in last month’s bulletin, it’s good to see people take an interest, as plenty of people have given me a hard time about one of the photos in particular. I’m not good at sitting around doing nothing, but that was the plan for this holiday. I quickly got the hang of it and was soon enjoying my days, sitting by the pool, reading a book. I definitely came back relaxed and ready for a busy season of motorsport.
Back in time for the Carters Tyres South Island Endurance Series, I was pleasantly surprised by the entry numbers. We had an almost capacity grid for the one hour endurance and a field of twenty eight cars for the three hour endurance. Both races kept the crowd entertained, but the last thirty minutes of the three hour, was probably the best run to the chequered flag we have seen at an endurance event at our circuit. It was nail biting stuff, was the Ferrari of Sam Filmore and Danny Stutterd going to win, or would it be the Mercedes of Dwayne Carter and Shane Hodgson. You could feel the tension in the air and could sense that the bulk of the crowd wanted the Carters car to win. They were always a crowd favourite in the V8 Supercar and it seemed the Mercedes AMG SLS GT3 was also warmly received. Congratulation goes to Dwayne and Shane for taking out the win and a big thank you to Carters Tyres for coming on board as the Series sponsor. If this year’s event was anything to go by, the NZ Endurance Championship in March 2017 is going to be off the planet……………. I’m already excited and we’ve still got five months to go.
The day after the endurance, we held Mag and Turbo Club Day 2. Over seventy competitors turned up for another great Club Day. Across the grids we had good numbers in most classes. I was a little surprised at the low turnout in the Continental Rennsport class, but put this down to a number of them running the day before and half a dozen cars that are eligible, choosing to race with the classics. All in all, it was a great day of racing and the lollipop handicap races for the saloons and classics were great to watch. After talking to the Chief Flag Marshal; Mark George, he has requested we run the lollipops again at Club Day 3 in December, so that his team can brush up on their skills, in time for the Skope Classic in February.
There has always been a lot of discussion around paying our volunteers. I’ve been a volunteer from soon after I entered my first Speed Event back in 2006, the reason I volunteered, was because I wanted to give back to the sport and most importantly, I did it for fun. So I’m not and never will be a fan of paying volunteers. I take a lot of pride in that word “Volunteer”. It’s far more rewarding than being paid. Now I’m one of the lucky people who now has a paid job in motorsport, but I still volunteer at many events around the South Island and I plan to do that until the day I die. Just so you can get an idea of what it would cost, we can have anywhere from seventy to one hundred and twenty volunteers at an event. It could cost us anywhere from $3500 to $6000 per day, which would mean an entry fee increase from $50 to $80 per event, per competitor, so I think it’s really important we hold on to our volunteers and make sure we treat them well.
We have tried all kinds of things to say thank you to our volunteers, we provide them with lunch and a refreshment at the end of the day. When they’ve been to a few events, they get given a shirt. We’ve taken a group of volunteers to a Crusaders rugby match. We are always trying to think of new ways to say thank you and I’m proud to announce, this year’s incentive, is possibly the best we’ve ever done. We are taking $5 from every entry fee, from Pursuit Sprints up and putting it towards a major prize at the end of the season. The prize
Pagewill be 4 a trip for two to a Supercar Championship Round in Australia (still to be confirmed; Canterbury Car Club Inc Gold Coast or Newcastle), with one thousand dollars spending money. Valued at $5000.
Every event a person volunteers at and signs in at the Volunteer Hub, will get them one entry into the draw at a special Volunteer Family Fun Day on Saturday 17th June 2017. The more events a person volunteers at, the more entries they will receive. To get their name in the draw, they will need to be at the Volunteer Fun Day.
To make the Volunteer Family Fun Day something special, we are going to need the members help. The major prize is awesome, but we’d like to have a heap of prizes and giveaways at the day, so we are looking for donations from the members, especially those who compete. If you run your own business or can twist your bosses arm, we’d appreciate the donation of products or services. It’ll be going to a good cause; our amazing team of volunteers. If you want to make a donation, feel free to drop them into the office or flick me an email. We will start collecting them from now, but will do another shout out as we get closer to the end of season.
At the Volunteer Family Fun Day, we would like to offer some Hot Lap rides to the volunteers. It’s a long way off, but if you’ve got a race car with a passenger seat and belts that meets Schedule A and you’d like to give up an afternoon to give back to the volunteers, then please pencil it in your diary. Like the prizes, I will remind everyone as we get closer to the end of season.
The plan for the Volunteer Fun Day is to provide an afternoon of family fun, we’ll be putting on a BBQ and some refreshments. We are keen to provide things for the kids to do, so if you are able to help us out with any form of children’s entertainment (bouncy castles, ride on cars, face painting etc), please let me know. It’s about making one day per year, super special for our volunteers. They’re an integral part of our club and this day is a way to recognise their hard work.
In a few weeks’ time we will be holding the Mike Pero Motorsport Park Speed Festival, over the weekend of October 29th and 30th. This event will be a showcase of the South Island Registers. Entry numbers are looking good, with close to 150 cars entered for the event. Classes running at the Speed Festival are: SI Formula 1600, 2KCup SI, OSCA, Pre 65, Pro 7, Mini 7, NZ6 and Continental Rennsport. It’ll be a great weekend of racing, with weekend passes available at the gate for $15.
Until next time, take care and I hope to see you at the Speed Festival.

Canterbury Car Club Inc Ramblings From The Captains Chair….. Report from the Club Captain
It shows the strength of our sport when you can have near full fields of Enduro cars and the following day have 70+ entries to a club race day. It was awesome to watch some of the top Enduro cars set lap times as fast if not faster than any Saloon car we have seen, and to do that lap after lap for 3 hours is quite incredible.
However the real Hero’s of that weekend are the volunteers some of which gave two or three (or more) days to make these races possible, Thanks guys it is always appreciated and that is why the Club is working on some prizes for the season to come, not to forget the big prize of a trip to Aussie to watch V8 Supercars!! Every day you volunteer enters you into the draw so good luck!
Prize giving was another great night with a good turn out. Everyone who turned up went away with a prize or two! If you couldn’t make it but won a trophy or certificate please contact either Allan Coker or myself and we can arrange to get these to you.
I had the pleasure of sitting in with Mark and Chris during the September Nav Rally based out of the Dunsandal Pub. This was great fun and requires a little sideways thinking, (also a little explaining to the farmer who is wondering why you are lost on his farm!) These events are incredible fun and cheap. If you haven’t done one before I would suggest jumping in with a crew to see how its done.
It was really hard put all the names of those who entered the chocofish draw into a hat and drawing a winner, the correct answer was the late great Chris Amon, It was the 50th anniversary this year of that famous win and Ford recognised this by entering Le Mans with Scott Dixon as a driver. The winners of the chocofish are Aaron ,Levi and Linda!
Coming up soon: Mag and Turbo Race Series, Club day 3, Dec. Classic Racers Classic racers have a new competition for this season. Just enter your classic car for club day events and you will be in the running for prizes to be presented at the end of the season. 1st = $400 worth of tyres, 2nd= $300 worth of tyres and 3rd = $200 or tyres. The competition is open to all classic cars 30 plus years, 1987 and older. Please remember to state the age of your car on entry form. Normal club points apply to finishing position in each completed race and you receive an extra point for each year your car is older than 30 years. E.G. A 1972 car would get an extra 15 points for each completed race. Cheers Lewis Low

Focus on Macau for F3 drivers As we head to the end of the year and the end of the season for the Northern Hemisphere, the focus for single seater drivers will be on the Macau Grand Prix, held in one of China’s Special Administrative Regions in November (17 20). It is the only street circuit in which both car and motorcycle races are held. It’s a race that attracts many of the world’s top Formula Three drivers, and it is an event that they look forward to.
It is a challenging and demanding circuit consisting of fast straights, tight corners and uncompromising crash barriers. Originally conceived in 1954, the Macau Grand Prix evolved over the years through to the first Formula Three event in 1983 which was won by a young Ayrton Senna. Many notable Formula One drivers have competed and won the event, preceding their eventual F1 careers.
In 1990 Michael Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen were competing for the lead heading into the final lap. Attempting an overtaking manoeuvre, Häkkinen hit the back of Schumacher's car and crashed out. Schumacher's car was able to continue with its rear wing damaged and eventually won the race with the best aggregate time. Other F1 drivers to have won include Riccardo Patrese, David Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher and Takuma Sato.
This year the race will be known as the FIA F3 World Cup and it will be the third time that Nick Cassidy will compete on this famous street circuit in November. It was two years ago that he finished third in the Grand Prix, catapulting him into the eyes of many top single seater teams and opening a number of doors that have led him to where he is today.
Almost 30 per cent of the grid announced so far have also raced here in New Zealand in the Toyota Racing Series including Jann Mardenborough, 2016 FIA F3 European Championship race winner Callum Ilott with Pedro Piquet as team mate and British F4 Champion, 2016 TRS Champion and 2016 Formula Renault NEC Champion Lando Norris.
Sam MacLeod and Ferdinand Habsburg will race for Fortec, Nikita Mazepin is there with Hitech and Guanyu Zhou will also race. Missing will be 2015 TRS Champion, Lance Stroll, who has other commitments and will not compete.
The advancement of Stroll through the single seater ranks is one to keep an eye on. Competing in the 2015 Toyota Racing Series, Stroll was on the podium for 10 of the 15 races, winning four of these. He certainly made a name for himself in Canterbury winning two of the three races at the opening round at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park. His name is now inscribed on both the Lady Wigram and the NZ Grand Prix trophies. This season he easily won the FIA European Formula Three Championship with one round remaining.
Stroll now has enough points required for a super licence and between now and the end of the year he will reportedly drive around 8,000 miles of testing at a string of circuits around the world, driving an unbranded 2014 Williams Mercedes. It is also expected that he will drive for Williams F1 Racing next season.

My Favorite Animal Our teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and I said, "Fried chicken." She said I wasn't funny, but she couldn't have been right, because everyone else laughed. My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal. I told my dad what happened and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef. Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal's office. I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again. The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was. I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal's office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again. I don't understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn’t like it when I am. Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous military person I admired most. I told her, "Colonel Sanders." Guess where I am now…
Marcus Armstrong races through to fourth in his single seater race debut at the Nurburgring. Photo credit: Formula Renault 2.0 NEC Page 14 Canterbury Car Club Inc Marcus Armstrong celebrates a challenging single seater debut
Christchurch born race driver Marcus Armstrong, 16, has achieved all his goals in his single seater debut at the daunting Nurburgring in Germany. Competing in the penultimate round of the 2016 Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Championship on Saturday and Sunday with respected team R ace GP, Armstrong was quickly on the pace and served notice of his speed in the final practice session. Formula Renault competes on the full Formula One circuit, and it was Armstrong’s first time driving that fast and challenging 5.1 km track format. Slowed by a puncture in the first qualifying session, he was able to post 14th fastest in the field of 24. The second qualifying session went better, and Armstrong took seventh fastest to line up on the fourth row of the grid on Sunday. “That puncture in qualifying made race one very difficult! I didn’t take any risks to overtake drivers because from P14 it was best to take care of the car and the tyres.” An epic battle with championship regular Henrique Chavez was a highlight of the closing laps, the pair trading places until Armstrong overtaking cleanly on the final lap. On Sunday, in heavy fog, more experienced competitors were involved in several incidents, with multiple spins causing yellow flag periods and bringing out the safety car. When racing resumed, Armstrong was the talk of pit lane, carving cleanly through the fog bound field to finish fourth, just missing a podium placing. He was one of only six drivers to crack into the 1:57 lap times, and his fastest lap was a 1:57.715 with an average speed of 157.4 km/h. “I knew we had the speed to compete for a podium, it was just a case of making the most of track position and overtaking cleanly. I’m really pleased with this first race weekend and I can’t wait to get back on track in Estoril for the Eurocup,” he said. Marcus Armstrong is currently based in Oxford, England, as he pursues his motor racing career. He has been racing karts in Europe this year with the factory Tonykart team, competing against the best karters in the world in the hotly contested KZ class right up to European and World Championship level. Karting is widely acknowledged as the best foundation for any driver with aspirations of reaching the highest level of motorsport. Now, Armstrong is preparing to move up to full sized single seater categories. Contesting the late season Formula Renault 2.0 rounds is part of that preparation programme for the young driver, who has his sights set on premier racing categories in coming years.

This is a conversation between a man and his wife. Please note that she asks 5 or 6 questions which he answered quite simply and she is speechless after answering only one question. Critical Thinking At Its Best! Woman: Do you drink beer? Man: Yes Woman: How many beers a day? Man: Usually about 3 Woman: How much do you pay per beer? Man: $5.00 which includes a tip (This is where it gets scary !) Woman: And how long have you been drinking? Man: About 20 years, I suppose Woman: So a beer costs $5.00 and you have 3 beers a day which puts your spending each month at $450.00. In one year , it would be approximately $5400.00 correct? Man: Correct Woman: If in 1 year you spend $5400.00, not accounting for inflation, the past 20 years puts your spending at $108,000.00 correct? Man: Correct Woman: Do you know that if you didn't drink so much beer, that money could have been put in a step-up interest savings account and after accounting for compound interest for the past 20 years, you could have now bought a Ferrari? Man: Do you drink beer? Woman: No. Man: Where's your Ferrari?

A guy is walking along a beach when he comes across a lamp partially buried in the sand. He picks up the lamp and gives it a rub. A genie appears and tells him he has been granted one wish. The guy thinks for a moment and says, "I want to live forever.” "Sorry," said the genie, "I'm not allowed to grant eternal life.” "OK, then, I want to die after England wins a major soccer title "You crafty little bastard," said the genie.
