Sister Mary, St. Agnes Hospital, Baltimore. She came with Sister Scholastica in 1854 to Los Angeles. One of 6 ?? - 3 Spanish & 3 Irish who came to found school & hospital in Los Angeles.

Following information supplied by Kristine Gunnell: This is a photo of Sister Mary Ann McAleer (1814-1889), the administrator of St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore from 1862-1879, and 1883-1889. She was likely a mentor of Sister Ann Gillen (1818-1902) who managed the Los Angeles Infirmary (Sisters' Hospital) from 1858-1881. Gillen was one of the original six sisters who came to Los Angeles on January 6, 1856, and she was likely Irish-American (born in Pennsylvania). Gillen worked as a nurse at St. Mary's Orphan Asylum in Baltimore before coming to Los Angeles (1852-1855) and since McAleer had been a nurse at the Baltimore Infirmary since 1839, Gillen likely consulted with her informally on difficult cases. Although undated, the inscription notes that the photo is "Sister Mary Ann, St. Agnes Hospital, Baltimore," so it was likely taken after 1862, since St. Agnes opened that year. So, the picture was also likely sent to Sister Ann Gillen during the 1860s or 1870s. [The sender's name is illegible on the copy, but it was likely another sister who knew them both in Baltimore].
