p≡p foundation ‒ Key Facts

Core Function

The core activity of the p≡p foundation is to develop the p≡p engine and the adapters as well as to ensure that that the security of these core components is ensured, as they are the heart of all p≡p software. To enhance security and increase confdence in p≡p's core code audits are carried out: the frst one was published in October 2016 and carried out by the independent and trustworthy German company SektionEins GmbH.

Communication Function

From 2015 to 2017 actors of p≡p foundation participated in dozens of events providing talks and workshops around the globe, including events at several CCC events in Germany and Switzerland, community, security and hacker camps and conferences in e.g. Belgium, France, the Netherlands, India, Norway, Serbia, Singapore and Spain. This is part of the p≡p community strategy to make p≡p known and involve community folks in early discussions.

Standardization Function

A collaboration with Internet Society Switzerland (ISOC-CH) on project "Implementing Privacy via Mass Encryption" with a Beyond the Net grant from ISOC international of USD 30'000 started – to make p≡p Internet-Drafts (for the process of the standardization of p≡p as Internet standard) submission-ready (USD 18,000) -- past meetings of the IETF where Internet-Drafts are discussed were in Prague (July 2017) and Singapore (November 2017). The p≡p idea benefts from strong support, also from key fgures inside the IETF standardization body. The process just needs to be continued and intensifed. The project plan forsees to submit roughly 8 Internet-Drafts per year (from mid 2017 to mid 2019). USD 12,000 of the grant will be used for the workshop series Values of Internet Technologies (VIT) providing a platform for discussions on privacy, security, anonymity, interoperability and . The workshop series start in January 2018: fve more workshops will follow throughout Switzerland and at a frequency of three months.

In November 2017 the Sequoia project was started, which is an OpenPGP implementation in Rust, such that the p≡p project is not just abstracting and facilitating, but actually now implementing crypto. Three people from the GnuPG project moved to the p≡p foundation and started out this project in close collaboration with important actors of the OpenPGP community. Sequoia will be owned by p≡p foundation and will be used by the p≡p engine. With Sequoia, licensing (e.g. on iOS), architectural and security issues of GnuPG can be addressed effectively and directly. First results, usuable for production systems, can be expected in within a year. Nevertheless, the GnuPG project has the full support of the p≡p foundation. In 2017 a donation of EUR 5,000 was made in that respect and the p≡p foundation also called out to support the GnuPG Fundraising Rally.

GNUnet Project p≡p foundation took co-ownership of GNUnet's full implementation via a mutual agreement with the GNUnet e.V. association and with the intend to have GNUnet widespread. GNUnet is an implementation of peer-to-peer networking, developing into a full-scale anonymization implementation. This will lead p≡p into providing full meta data protection in all p≡p end-user software. We got the code as a donation, so no invest was needed, while this means collecting many man years of code into the ownership of p≡p foundation with the possibility to multi-license it for widespread distribution. On the other side, the p≡p project is expected to contribute back, by supporting further GNUnet development. In 2017 the p≡p foundation received a grant from NLnet foundation of EUR 30,000 to carry out an emulation of the GNUnet network under the conditions we expect with p≡p being deployed into the wild. For this project, we're still seeking further funding, as we expect the costs to be around EUR 100'000 at least. The emulation project forsees to emulate GNUnet running for 1k, 10k, 100k and 1m peers exchanging under realistic assumptions of users, including corporations, communicating on a day-by-day basis.

Enigmail/p≡p Project

Our partnership with is resulting in running versions of Enigmail/p≡p for Windows, macOS and GNU/Linux (most distributions) already. We're working on packaging, developing on automated deployment, so that by the end of the year a public beta phase can be started. By 2018/Q1 a release seems realistic. This will be time where we can put Enigmail/p≡p into so then.
