My Brethren, as you read through this magazine you will find little mention of the Master Masons that have had my back and assisted me throughout my Administration. They have provided immeasurable wise counsel and guidance to me and my staff and assured that we did not stray too far from our proper Masonic Path. Due to a lack of space on our Official Directory page they were omitted. I’m now taking time out to assure that proper recognition and credit is given to those stalwart individuals. They are the Most Worshipful Past Grand Masters of this Jurisdiction. Our Senior MWPGM Robert E. Harris, Sr. #34 who, in his own words, ‘Is cursed with memory and recall’, has enabled me to delve into the past and keep on subject with up-to-date back ground information when the waters have been muddied. His knowledge of our MWPHGL of VA Constitution keeps us on the correct track assuring proper compliance. MWPGM Robert G. Davis #124 whose historic knowledge of this MW Prince Hall Grand Lodge has prodded the accreditation of the new office of Worshipful Grand Historian and has this project off and running. His understanding of this projects importance to the future of this Grand Lodge demands that he be in the foreground to assure its firm foundation. MWPGM Billie L. Thompson, Sr. # 46 has assisted in guiding our Grand Lodge’s Board of Directors, supplying them with his business expertise as well as compliance with our MW Prince Hall Grand Lodge Constitution. MWPGM Lionel Spruill, Sr. #189 has supplied us with his legislative prowess and expertise to overcome past problems and prevent their reoccurrence. MWPGM Gilbert ‘Gil’ Tyler #27 has more than adequately demonstrated that he is an ambassador to our Foreign Jurisdictions and performs daily with the best interest of our MWPHGL at heart and it gives me great relief that I do not have to concern myself in that arena. MWPGM George H. Clemons #120 has provided wise counsel and I hold him so dear that he has graciously accepted the Chairmanship of our 137th Annual Grand Session which immediately becomes a full-time job. MWPGM Franklin D. R. Lyons, Sr. #324 is a true friend and I have always valued his friendship and guidance. In his present illness, I look to those better times and remember very much where he would stand on issues of the days past, forming some opinions with these things in mind. MWPGM Curtis S. Vaughan, Jr. #67 provides that kind of support that is needed when you are muddled down in a particular situation when a positive head nod and a smile allow you to feel that you are on the right track. And, last but surely not least, my personal friend MWPGM Larry D. Christian #253. He and I served as District Deputy Grand Masters together and he has provided assistance to our Board of Directors and me assuring a smooth transition and continuity from our most recent past administration and the adoption of policies that were presented in our present administration. These said individuals provide the essence of what Masonry is about, Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. MWGM Herman Eggleston, Jr. #146

Faces at MWGM Eggleston’s Testimonial Banquet

From the Editor PM L. J. McCoy, Jr.

Ten years ago, Past Grand Master Franklin D. R. Lyons #324 along with Club Virginia members ADDGM Michael D. Brown #106, PM John E. Amos #167, PM Kennedy Shelton, DDGM Raymond E. Reed, Sr. #81, and PM Jesse Frierson #324 established the basics, creating a Masonic Golf Tournament whose proceeds supplemented our Grand Lodge’s Budget and its scholarship fund. Nine years ago, PM Taylor L. Jones #33 started the first Gospel Program for Shiloh Lodge #33 in order to create a standing scholarship fund for the lodge. Three years ago, Asst. District Deputy Grand Masters Joseph Diggs #43 and Darryl Hill #43 began a program called Grooming Tomorrow’s Leaders to help young men develop exceptional cultural standards. In our world today, there must be traditional as well as creative programs which support our future. Our Grand Lodge, Masonic Districts, and Subordinate Lodges have stepped forward, determined to guide the young professionals and laymen who will be our future leaders. This determination has always been our historic cornerstone. As Prince Hall and 14 other African Americans were made Master Masons on March 6, 1775 by the Irish Constitution Military Lodge #441, they had to assure their future. These African Americans were given the authority only to meet as a lodge, form processions on the Festival Days of the Sts. John, and conduct Masonic funerals. When they were denied the opportunity to confer degrees, they realized that they would soon be extinct. After some disappointing attempts in applying for a warrant from the Grand Lodge of England, they did receive their warrant in 1784 and founded African Lodge #459 in Boston, Massachusetts. Americans of African descent continue to struggle for equality in this, the land of the free. But as long as there are God fearing men who believe in making a better life for the young and disenfranchised, we may remain confident that we will overcome. While this Grand Lodge turns another page on our Masonic Trestle Board with a new administration, we should continue to build on Prince Hall’s ambition to survive. It is in this vane that we encourage each of you to take the initiative as of being an engineer of greatness, contributing to the future of our successes and exercise your civil and Masonic rights in casting your vote to elect our young men and women to meet the future challenges.

GL Cookout In the West By WPM Raymond A. Sutton, III

Danville – The MW Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia put on the dog and served up the pig on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Zion Baptist Church’s spacious picnic area near Danville, VA. The picnic site was in the small town of Ring Gold, VA. MWGM Herman Eggleston, Jr. #146 and his wife Claudette, RWDGM Shelton Riddick #323 and his wife Shirley, RWSGW Roger C. Brown #327, RWGT James E. Watkins, Jr. #44, RWGS Isaac S. Hughes #314 and his wife Anna, RWSGD Richard Townes #235, and RWJGD Donald S. Wilson #67 and his wife Sandra, a host of District Deputy Grand Masters, and other appointed Grand Lodge Officers were among the revelers who delighted in the day’s planned activities and festivities. A fifty pound whole barbequed pig was set out, chopped and served to a crowd of more than two hundred-fifty who brought their appetites with them. There was an abundance of freshly fried fish, hot dogs, hamburgers, savory baked beans and seasoned green beans, delicious pasta and potato salads, ice cold drinks and tasty cake. All of the necessary condiments were available and assured that every palate was satisfied. All of the food was prepared to perfection and everyone was pleased with the food’s presentation. The kids were kept occupied when they weren’t eating with the air filled “Moon Walk” Bounce House and Slide which easily rated their day as most enjoyable. Two horse shoe pits, an oversized pavilion with several large picnic tables, table games, excellent conversation and drawings with a myriad of door prizes kept all of the adults entertained and on their toes throughout the day. Figuratively, everyone took home a door prize. The scheduled events began at high noon and continued until all were satiated, satisfied, or some other high level of gratification to include being completely worn out and had to go home.

9 Founder’s Day 2012 By WPM Raymond A. Sutton, III

Petersburg – History relives itself every year through this MW

Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia honoring those who have gone on before us and who set the ground work to put our Grand Lodge on its present footing. It is an awakening experience that we can pay homage to our founders through bringing to light the great history of our Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia and share it with our uninformed Brethren, family and friends. And then, to see the light go on in a seasoned Mason’s eye as he comes to an understanding of a particular course of events which was previously hidden from his level of knowledge of our history or the reaffirming of our vows through the reciting of our Credo. The program may seem redundant to some of those who attend every year, but the lesson that is learned by the first time attendee is the best part of the repetition. The Mayor of this time honored city, the Honorable Brian Moore bid us welcome and extended greetings from the City of Petersburg and it’s Council. The Twelfth Masonic District hosts this great event each year and ADDGM Joseph E. Diggs #43 greeted us on behalf of DDGM Larry A. Moody #7 and the entire District to add to our feeling of welcome. The pastor, Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Tillman delivered a message from II Samuel, 9:1 and directed us to “illustrate to people what God’s people are about.” The solemnity of the wreath laying ceremony conducted by GM Herman Eggleston, Jr. #146 placed each one of us in the exact place of our founders as possible, almost feeling the trials and emotions of that day. Our Annual Founder’s Day Program is held in the same church where it all began, some one hundred and thirty-six years ago. First Baptist Church, 236 Harrison Street, Petersburg, VA is historic in its own right and proudly displays our Monument to Prince Hall Masonry in its yard where we annually lay our wreath of dedication.

As a former Mental Health professional with over 34 years in the health care services, I have found that generally, men are reluctant to face or acknowledge their symptoms of depression or moreover deal with it head on. The society’s role expectation of males may deny them the tolerance of appearing weak or unable to cope with disturbing events. Often men must be encouraged, cajoled or pushed to become introspective and confront the situation as well as the possible solution. However, for anyone to begin to address any problem there must be an acknowledgement that something is going wrong and outside help is necessary. Depression is a feeling of intense sadness that is out of proportion to the event and persists beyond an appropriate length of time. After anxiety, depression is the most common mental health disorder. First, it is an affective disorder or mood disorder and these both affect one’s emotional states. Sometimes these emotional states are revealed through facial expressions and gestures. But, more importantly, what is stated and how it’s stated in the context of a situation that the person tells you what they are feeling. Be alert to any distorted thinking or expressions of suicidal feelings. Generally, there are progressive symptoms of depression that vary over time. Sadness, mood swings, crying fits may be a part of the normal experiences of everyday life but is quite different from the severe depression that is classified as a mental disorder. For example, sadness is a natural reaction to loss, (e.g. a death, divorce, loss of job) defeat, despair, disappointment, trauma or catastrophe. To some extent this emotion is psychologically appropriate under these situations because it permits a person to withdraw from offensive or unpleasant situations that may promote recovery from such life changing distresses. If that person remains emotionally paralyzed, withdrawn and non-functional, then he/she may be sliding into a deep clinical depression. Some researchers have estimated that from 25 to 30 percent of all people will experience some form of extreme mood disturbance. However, only about 10 percent will have a disorder serious enough to need psychiatric attention and of these 10 percent, about one third may have lasting chronic depression.
