8 nightspots September 14, 2011 Well-wishers at the 2012 Miss Continental finals at The Vic Theatre. DANCING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE by Marc “Moose” Moder

MOOSE’S ESSENTIAL TRACKS: PART 1 As my 40-something-ish birthday looms, I get reflective not on my friends, family, pets or lovers (in that order if need be) but on music, which holds all my memories the best. Since I work with dance music, I thought it’d be a great time to share with you the essential dance tracks that shaped a tiny little Moose into the dance diva you see before you here in Nightspots. Since I lived in the ‘70s to start, let’s launch there. Now I know I was too young (and sans cock supply) to get into Studio 54, but grade school fag as I was, I was feeling these key tracks.

“Give Me Tonight” by George Benson was one of the few big disco hits to work in jazz as well (also see Herb Alpert and Chuck Mangione). For many of us it was our first taste—if only a small one—of jazz guitar. Still one of the biggest panty droppers for me. Sexy still. TOUCHE Precious boot-y. Photos by Kirk “Stomp” by Brothers Johnson was the first song I ever did a choreographed disco routine in my room to. After perfecting what I called the “Scrambled Egg” dance, I debuted it to a girlfriend of mine who promptly laughed at me. It was hot. She’s a bitch. This song was my first intro to real funk. The slappy bass, vocal chant layering, and horn section still sounds hot today and introduced me to black music in general.

“Knock On Wood” by Anita Ward showed me (and apparently Cyon Flare) that black ladies can be crazy and artsy, not just versions of Diana Ross and Tami Terrell. That girl, along with Grace Jones, freaked us all out for a hot minute and inspired artists like Kelis and Lady Gaga later. Plus, it’s one of the first new-wave/electro sounding disco songs I remember. Not your mother’s .

“You Make Me Feel” by Sylvester really blew my mind. I’m pretty sure 99% of folks hearing him for the first time thought he was a girl from the vocals and were more confused seeing this genderfucker on his album covers. He was “living it” way before it was cool in the mainstream. He lived a fearless, short life, but inspired millions of gay boys and girls to screw convention and be fearlessly gay.

Closing out the disco era was “Rapture” by Blondie—the first time I ever heard rap music. I’d been familiar with Blondie as a punk/disco band with some big hits, but this odd talky way of telling a musical story hurt my brain. So crazy-sounding at the time, it would lead me out of disco and into the ‘80s and hip hop. And there’s where we’ll start the journey next time.

The electronic pop group Erasure consists of Andy Bell and . This duo is hitting the road on their first tour in five years in support of their new album, Tomorrow’s World. The new single “When I Start To (Break It All Down)” was just released. We caught up with Andy while he was down in South America recently.

Nightspots Magazine: Hi, Andy. I am calling from Chicago. You are in Brazil? AB: Yeah, we are in Sao Paolo. It has been cloudy all day, just starting to break through now.

NM: I wanted to ask how your solo album Non-Stop influenced the new Erasure album Tomorrow’s World. AB: I think it did but I don’t know whether heard it or not. I know Vince heard it. I think all of these things work subconsciously. I think just by the very fact of doing it you set the bar up a bit. You put more energy into it. That definitely has happened on some subliminal level. Whether people are aware of it, I don’t know. I think definitely with the synth programming with Vince’s and Frank’s work it has given it an energetic input.

NM: Right now you are currently on a Total Pop! Tour. AB: Yes, we have finished the first half so the next bit will be Tomorrow’s World.

NM: Do you get a break? AB: We don’t really get a break but we get to turn it around in Tampa. We have all our new production stuff there coming in. We have to reinvent a whole new show in six days.

NM: Wow. Is there a theme, like space? AB: We are doing six tracks from the new album so they are quite difficult, performing wise. Then there will be songs from this part of the tour so still singles and stuff people know. There is a whole big set that looks very Tomorrow’s World-ish. It is quite Dune-ish with our stained glass window motif. Hopefully it will be really nice.

NM: Light visuals, I am sure… AB: Yeah, a whole lot!

NM: The first song on the album, “Be WithY ou,” really has you stretching vocally. AB: Oh, right. That is really high, that one. That is one of the most difficult songs to sing on the album. I think that will be the next single as well. It was very high, when you think about it. I was doing vocals in Frank’s LA studio. He uses loads of EQ and compression before you even go into his Mac so you have to sing on the top of your voice. It was quite hard.

NM: Do you have a video coming out? AB: We haven’t seen it so we don’t know what it is going to look like. They just took some live footage of us, on the road, backstage and stuff like that.

NM: Is there an opener for the tour? AB: Frankmusic will be doing it in the United States.

NM: You have quite a variety of fans. I remember on the Cowboy Tour it was gay, ‘80s and a lot of Asians. AB: I think that is all the techno people or geeky people, I am not sure. We are grateful to all of our fans.

Give “” for the two playing two nights Sept 16 and 17 at the Congress Theatre, 2135 N. Milwaukee Avenue. For information and tickets visit http://www.erasureinfo.com. Andy will do a live DJ set after the Sept 16 show at Spin, 800 West Belmont Ave. 14 nightspots September 14, 2011 Mondays at Crew | 8pm sharp!

MAIN: All of a sudden, it dawns on him, ... DETAIL: ... “Wait! I don’t think this is the bus stop after all.” Q: Aren’t laws making it illegal to transmit HIV to sex partners just going to make people not want to test? How THE CALL will this stop the disease? Where have I seen THEM before? An increasing number of countries, including the United Photos courtesy of The Call States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, are creating legislation that criminalizes individuals who have contributed to the spread of HIV. It is easy to understand, in theory, why government officials may believe the institution of HIV criminalization laws may benefit public health. In the case of HIV criminalization laws, governments seem to believe that the risk of being thrown in jail or paying fines will deter or prevent HIV-positive individuals from spreading the disease. Unfortunately, the problem is not that easy to solve.

While it is good that governments are thinking about how to reduce the spread of HIV, we must also recognize that HIV criminalization laws may actually do more harm than good.

Many governments criminalize those who have contributed to the spread of HIV if they were aware at the time of transmission that they had tested positive. However, using the knowledge of one’s HIV-positive status as an integral part of prosecution gives rise to a plethora of other serious issues. Because their test results may be used against them in a court of law, many sexually-active individuals—especially those in higher-risk communities—are likely to stop getting tested for fear of being prosecuted against in the future. This has grave ramifications for public health and defeats the original purpose of HIV criminalization laws.

Further, HIV criminalization laws may severely damage the relationship between healthcare providers and patients. If providers are required to testify against their patients under new HIV criminalization laws, confidentiality and trust will be compromised. This may cause patients to be less specific and honest about their sexual and medical histories, leading to improper treatments.

Criminalizing HIV-positive individuals may only function to stigmatize the LGBTQ community even more, thereby reversing years of advocacy and prevention work.

For more on HIV criminalization laws see www.lambdalegal. org/our-work/publications/general/state-criminal-statutes- hiv.html

nightspots 19 September 14, 2011 BEING CONTINUED by AK Miller DOORS Forgetting that they didn’t operate quite like elevator doors, Mark stuck his hand into the train, still holding his latte, as the subway doors closed in on it. And kept trying to close. He couldn’t pull his hand out without dropping the drink all over the interior of the train, though the mess would have sped off, leaving him behind. It crossed his mind. Instead he quickly tried to pry the doors apart using his other hand, which was of course holding his phone, a newspaper and a pack of gum. Ben watched this from just inside of the train car. He was only two stops from his destination and was irked by the delay this was causing. Annoyed, Ben reached over and pulled the door release cord and grabbed the latte. Mark fell into the train and snapped himself back together, ignoring the disapproving glares coming from almost everybody. “My hero,” he said as he took his latte back from Ben and quickly took a sip. Ben turned away and looked out the window, but could feel Mark still looking at him. And Mark was actually staring at him. There was something about this guy. He was tall and impossibly thin. His ears and top lip were too big for his face and his eyes were so dark brown you could not make out his pupils. If it weren’t for the fact that he was impeccably styled, he would have looked almost cartoonish. Not Mark’s usual type at all. Finally, Ben was done with the one-sided staring contest and faced Mark with “Do you have a problem?” Unshaken, Mark answered, “No. It’s just ...you’re gorgeous.” Ben had no response to this. He just looked at Mark and blinked. When the train doors opened up at Diversey, Ben turned to step out and felt Mark gently tap his shoulder. Ben turned and Mark handed him a business card and said, “Let me repay the favor and buy you dinner.” Then the doors closed between them. Stunned, Ben stood there looking at the card as the train pulled away. No one had ever called him gorgeous before.
