There were more than 130 car accidents reported, which claimed three lives during the night of the storm. Latvia’s fire and rescue service were kept busy throughout the night pulling cars out of ditches, picking up blown over advertisement stands and clearing roads of fallen trees. There were also reports of at least ten fires in which three people were injured. The strongest winds were observed in Ventspils, a city on the northwestern coast, where wind speeds peaked at 30 metres per second. In Riga winds also reached 20 metres per second. This is according to an index compiled by the private Swedish company Health Consumer. Latvia scored 449 points on the index out of a potential 1,000.
