he Lapeer County Community Foundation had the opportunity in spring of 2014 to be part of a joint Teffort between the DDAs in Imlay City and Lapeer to bring fine art reproductions to both of the county’s cities through the Detroit Institute of Art’s Inside/Out program. In Imlay City, art installations appeared at City Hall, the Ruth Hughes Memorial Library, the Eastern Michigan State Fairgrounds, the train viewing plat- form, the Imlay City Historical Museum, the Farmers Market and in one of the community parks. In Lapeer, art was found near City Hall, at the Mar- guerite deAngeli library, a wall on the mall between Computer Country II LLC and Pueblo Viejo, the historic courthouse lawn, Lapeer County Bank and Trust’s main A painting is just around the corner in Lapeer. office, near the historic railroad depot and along the linear park. The Community Foundation was a part of this excit- ing project by awarding a grant in the amount of $4427.50 to help bring the art to town. Representatives from the DIA visited both downtowns, scouting for loca- tions to host the big art. Visibility by pedestrians, big brick walls and green space near gather- ing locations attracted them. They took their time in each downtown and asked many questions about community life and events. The three-month Inside Out display inspired other public art-related events, and the DIA hosted a free visit to the DIA, so La- peer County residents were able to enjoy a bus trip to and ad- mission into the world- class art institution at no charge. y name is Mary Miller and I am a junior at Imlay City High School. I serve as Mchair of the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) that is part of the Lapeer County Community Foundation and made up 7th -12th graders from all over Lapeer County. I first joined YAC as a sophomore and have loved it ever since. If you don’t know what a YAC is or what YAC does, we assess issues important to youth in the county and make grants that address problems or fill gaps. We conduct surveys, talk to our friends, and read the local papers, but some things we just hear about or see at school. Chuck and Bonnie Schiedegger wanted a way to give back to the community where they had raised their children and built their business. They met with the Community Foundation and the Trust Department at Lapeer County Bank & Trust to discuss ways they might increase the impact of their giving. Now in Florida, they decided to set up a scholarship in their name with the Community Foundation for those in Lapeer County pursuing any type of engineering. “Although there is a huge need for engineers, it can be hard for young people to get a foothold. Tuition costs keep going up,” says Chuck. “I struggled back when I was earning my degree in mechanical engineering.” The scholarship will make awards to two stu- dents in 2015. As the fund continues to grow, so will its ability to help. Bonnie adds, “This is a great way to use what we have to make a difference in the community we love, now and into the future.”

After removing invasive plants called Garlic Mustard in the Jonathan Woods Nature Preserve at Seven Ponds Nature Center, it was time to plant 75 native trees such as Sugar Maple, Black, White, and Red Oaks, Bitternut Hickory, and American Basswood.
