Why Influencer Marketing Matters to Brands WHY INFLUENCER MARKETING MATTERS TO BRANDS Executive Summary Companies like Redbox, ABC News, Sears, Kraft, Coca-Cola, and P&G are leveraging the power of social influencers to develop engagement and trust with millions of potential customers. What is their secret? They use influencer marketing to connect with social media influencers that distribute brand-friendly content that is shared by others. Influencer marketing is emerging as a powerful way for brands to create trusted content that is shared across the web and reaches millions of target consumers. This whitepaper helps brands, marketers, agencies, and digital strategists gain insight about the importance of engaging with influencers to create authentic, trustworthy content that creates engagement and advocacy with consumers. Most brands and marketers have adjusted to the fact that their audiences are online. Information consumers used to get from television, newspapers, radio, and magazines can now be found online. When brands provide meaningful content, visitors are more likely to return and more likely to share that content with their own readers and followers. Influencers help brands • Provide relevant, trusted content • Reach more targeted consumers • Engage with consumers before they search • Distribute content at scale across the web When it comes to consumer spending, online content and social conversations have a huge impact on how consumers choose what to buy. Product information and brand-crafted messaging is not the type of content that keeps consumers engaged. Consumers want information that comes from like-minded people they trust. Misinformation is plaguing the digital economy, and recent no-money, no-fault FTC settlements with well-known retailers and brands to address fake reviews and undisclosed influencer endorsements may be doing little to deter deception.     Recent Developments in Influencer Marketing and Unfair Competition Introduction With the proliferation of social media channels has come more and more ways for advertisers to interact with consumers. In fact, many companies are focusing more on social media marketing strategies, as opposed to traditional advertising methods such as print publications and radio and television broadcasts. One increasingly popular social media marketing strategy is the use of social media influencers. There are varying definitions of an “influencer,” and the term is so widespread that it now appears in Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary. The term generally refers to someone who is able to generate awareness and/or shift perception of something potentially resulting in consideration, intent, and/or a conversion behavior. In social media, an influencer’s degree of influence is measured by indicators which differ from platform to platform, but include such things as followers, subscribers, views and likes. In many countries, there are only the nascent beginnings of the development of a legal frame work for how to address issues of unfair competition with regard to the activities of influencer marketing. This research followed a qualitative approach with a non-probabilistic convenience sampling. To achieve the objective of this study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the professionals of the beauty sector, who have already contributed to influencer marketing campaigns. The results highlight the importance of digital influencers and the need for their creative freedom, authenticity and credibility. The findings display some of the difficulties the professionals undertake as it comes to measuring return on investment, managing rewards and differentiation of influencer campaigns. The main value of this study is that it documents all stages of the influencer marketing process as well as highlights the challenges and success factors of an influencer campaign.
