FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a partnership of students, teachers, administrators, parents, corporate mentors, and community volunteers whose common goal is to create a challenging, hands-on environment that helps students grow into future engineers, scientists, inventors, and business people. All participants share opportunities for personal development and achievement. FIRST participants are eligible to apply for scholarships at prominent universities across the . For more information, check out https://www.firstinspires.org/scholarships

This is the 20th annual FRC competition in the Cleveland Area. The Buckeye Regional has become a classic known for its diverse attendance and its high level of competition. This event is made possible by the generous support of NASA, Parker Hannifin, Rockwell, The Callahan Family Foundation, Cleveland State University, and many others whom you’ll find advertised during the event.

If this is your first time at an FRC event, we encourage you watch the game and understand the competition. Remember these robots were designed, built, and programmed by teams of high school students in just six weeks. The teams are given a new challenge every year on the first Saturday in January. Their competition kits contain motors, radios, and structural parts and a game manual to safely guide their designs. From there, it is pure creativity and innovation as each team solves the year’s game challenge in their own unique way. “Deep Space” sponsored by the Boeing Company is the challenge this year. Team robots start the game in a “sand storm” during which they can only see through cameras on their robots and then a full 2 minute teleoperated round. During the round, robots will seal hatches and load cargo in simulated space vehicles ending with an exciting climb back into their space “habitats”.

We encourage you to tour the pits and talk to the team members about their robots and impressions of the FIRST program. You’ll be amazed by the enthusiasm that permeates these teams. While you’re at it, ask the team members what Gracious Professionalism© means to them. Gracious Professionalism© means achieving a goal while respecting each team and individual in the competition. Fierce competition and mutual gain are not separate notions.

The Buckeye Planning Committee would like to thank our all the organizations and people that support FIRST through funding, mentoring, education, motivation and all the other invaluable ways that help students achieve their best. We also thank the 150 volunteers that make an event like this possible and all of our spectators and visitors.

Page 3 www.oai.org/first/buckeye.org March 4, 2019 Load In

Please remember your Gracious Professionalism and be courteous to others who are trying to load-in or out. We will be using the same load in procedure as last year - the loading docks on the west side of the building (Gate “D”) - we will not be using the ground level doors and elevators.

Teams are encouraged to use the Wednesday Evening load-in times, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. We ARE allowing Wednesday evening setup but the pits will close promptly at 8:00pm Wed. If you cannot make this time you may load in and set up (still with only 5 people) on Thursday morning 7:45-8:30 am. 1) Teams will enter through the loading dock (East 19th Place) which can be reached through Carnegie Avenue on the west end of the Wolstein Arena. This will take you down to the loading area on the west end of the pit area at floor level. (see map below) 2) The load-in area both outside and inside the building will be crowded at times so please be careful and courteous. It is critical that you consolidate your materials and pack your vehicle so unloading can be done quickly and safely. This will help reduce wait time for the other teams waiting in the queue to unload. 3) Each team will be assigned a holding location on the loading dock where the team will unload its vehicle contents. When the team vehicle is unloaded it will need to leave the dock area. o When the team vehicle leaves the dock area the team will be given a pit setup permit and the 5 person pit setup crew (including at least one adult) can take their pit contents into the pit area and work on pit setup. For safety purposes, robots may be stored in a robot holding area in the dock area so that they are not in the pits during pit setup. o REMEMBER ALL Team members entering the facility are required to wear safety glasses. o When pit setup is completed, the team can move its bagged robot into its pit, turn in their work permit to pit administration. At that point, the pit setup crew will be required to leave the venue through the main concourse of the Wolstein Center on the Carnegie Ave exit. o Teams loading-in on Thursday morning will follow the same procedure beginning 7:45am. o Teams that finish pit setup on Wednesday will not be allowed back in the pits until 8:30am, Thursday. 4) A driver must stay with the vehicle while it is in the loading lane and area. After unloading, the driver may drive to lot 43 (with trailer) to wait for their team. The vehicle can remain in lot 43 only until pit set up is completed. (after load in, only trailers and buses are allowed in this lot) 5) Teams arriving late on Wednesday that are not able to complete pit setup by 8:00 pm may finish setup on Thursday morning between 7:45 and 8:30. Teams in this situation should keep their pit work permit and use this to allow 5 team members to walk down the ramp to the loading dock to enter (They will NOT drive down the ramp!) the rest of the team can enter via the concourse at 8:30am. No work will be allowed on the robot during these load-in periods. You cannot open or unbag your robot until Thursday morning after you receive approval from the inspectors and the announcement is made by pit admin at 8:30am. 6) Don’t forget your safety glasses! Please bring your own personal glasses so those we do have can be provided to guests. It would be greatly appreciated if teams brought glasses for their mentors, parents, and guests as well. We are able to offer Team Trailer/Truck parking this year. Trailer parking will be located in the same parking lot #43, please reference the map below.

Page 4 www.oai.org/first/buckeye.org March 4, 2019

Load-out

1) There will be 6 waiting stalls designated in the dock area. 2) When a team is completely ready to load out i.e. all materials packed and consolidated, 1 person will come to the loading dock to get their load out order and permit. They should not bring their pit with them. If there is space, they will be given an open stall to move their pit into. a. When they are assigned a space the driver may go get the trailer 3) To avoid congestion, the driver should not enter the ramp/dock area until the team is on the dock ready to go. - the driver should remain in lot 43 until they are called, that the team is ready to load, or on the lane on Carnegie Ave. 4) Once the team’s vehicle arrives on the dock, the team needs to promptly load their vehicle and the vehicle must depart promptly. The driver must stay with the vehicle at all times.

NOTE: Critical to the process are consolidated packing of pit materials, prompt unloading and loading, abiding by the process, and being graciously professional to fellow teams.

Page 5 www.oai.org/first/buckeye.org March 4, 2019 Parking for all other vehicles Parking around the Wolstein center is always difficult. Please carpool when possible. Team Photographers will be provided seating in the stands. These seats are marked “Team Photographer Only”. No team photographers are allowed on, in or around the active game floor, area, queuing lines or inside the secured curtained off area of the main game floor. Team photographers are allowed outside the secured curtained area around the game floor and are welcome in the pits on the main floor.

Professional Media Channels and Newspaper Reporter will be escorted safely onto field locations by FIRST Media Coordinators. One row of chairs is reserved between the east end of the game floor and stairs for professional media.

Inclement Weather

In the case of inclement weather, the venue will open early for teams to be seated in the arena. The Pit area will remain closed until its assigned time for opening. Teams cannot congregate in the main entrance and must be seated in the arena until pits open.

Practice Field

This year, a complete half practice field is available. This will accommodate one (1) robot to practice, one (1) tethered, and one (1) using a radio. It will be first come/first served to determine whether you are tethered or have the radio.

The Practice field is located near the loading dock at the West End of the building.

Machine Shop

Many thanks to NASA who is sponsoring our machine shop again this year. in-house this year with Lathe, Mill, Drill presses, Band Saws, Belt Sander, and various Hand tools. Please be aware of what you are asking of the Machine Shop. This is not a shop to build a highly complex part or assembly. This is for quick fixes and repairs.

The Machine shop is located in the Loading Dock/Practice Area.

Team Banners

Team Banners may not be hung anywhere in the arena. Teams are asked to respect the University and refrain from hanging signs and banners.

Page | 11 www.oai.org/first/buckeye.org March 4, 2019 National Anthem

We are looking for teams or team members who want to try out to sing the National Anthem on both Friday and Saturday. Tryouts will be at 11AM on Thursday - ONLY. Please listen for announcements from Pit admin for the location to meet. Only students who attend the tryout and practices will be permitted to perform during the event.

Judges Note

The Judge Advisor would like to pass on this recommendation. Given the recent ability of teams to compete for the Chairman’s Award at every event it has become difficult to get all the interviews completed in a timely manner. Given this challenge it is highly recommended that teams choose Chairman’s presenters that are separate from those that are needed elsewhere during the competition, i.e. Drive Team or Pit Crew. Don’t get surprised with conflicts in schedule. We want every team to compete at their best on and off the field.

Team Ambassadors

The Student Ambassador program has been improved this year. Each Ambassador will have a nametag with an Ambassador ribbon attached, they will take our VIP's on tours after the VIP event on Friday. In addition, there will be a table at the entrance to the Wolstein on Friday and Saturday to take visitors on tours and answer questions. Students will work in shifts so they won't be on duty for the whole competition. Interested students can volunteer at www.firstinspires.org. Log in to the FIRST site then go to the Volunteer tab and find the Buckeye Regional and volunteer as an Ambassador.

Dean’s List Finalists

We are going to recognize past Dean's list winners and finalists with special nametags. If you have a student that will be attending the Buckeye Regional and they won Dean's list at the Regional level in the past- please contact Katie at [email protected] and let her know the name of the student and your team #.

Safety Glass Station

Similar to last year we are looking for team volunteers to staff the Safety Glass Station in shifts. If you have some students interested, please let us know.

WOW Alliance Mentor Meeting

There will be a WOW Alliance Mentor meeting at the event this year. The meeting will be on Friday during lunch from 12:15 – 12:45. Location is TBD.

Page | 12 www.oai.org/first/buckeye.org March 4, 2019 Seating

There is no seat saving at any time. Seat saving devices will be removed.

Don’t Forget

ALL teams must submit their Printed roster from TIMS and all hard copy consent forms to ALL regional competitions that they attend. Please do NOT forget to bring these.

Take care of your robot bag. There will be a limited number of available bags at Pit Admin in case yours cannot be reused. Don’t forget to bring your spare bag and tags.

Keep up with the Team Updates and FRC Blog. There have been required updates announced in both the Team Updates and the FRC Blog.

Please reference the links and confirm you are up to date. This will help to avoid significant delays in both inspection and your matches.

Robot Lock-Up form! Without this form, the unbagging of your robot on Thursday morning will be severely delayed while we complete a Non-Compliance Robot Lock-Up form which requires multiple signatures.

Thank You!
