2021 Boone County Fair Queen Contestants 2 August 6, 2021 The Boone County Journal

Welcome to the 2021 Boone County Fair HIP HIP HOORAY!!! We’re back here in 2021 at the Boone County Fair for six fun filled days! I would like to personally welcome everyone back. It’s been a challenging year, to say the least, in planning ahead since a lot of what we do has to happen months before the fair opens. Thank goodness the CDC guidelines on wearing masks have been relaxed so masks will not be required at the fair. If you feel you would like to wear one please do. There will still be hand sanitizer stations throughout the grounds. When we ordered the show tickets in the Spring, the CDC guidelines were calling for limited capacity and social distancing so that’s when we decided to go with general admission seating in the grandstand for all the shows. We’re trying our best to keep up with the ever-changing COVID-19 situ- ation. Our ultimate goal is for everyone to be safe and have a great time at the fair. Speaking of a great time we have another wonderful fair planned for you and your family. Tuesday the Grange Food Stand will start at 6:00 a.m. with a delicious breakfast. At noon we will have the flag raising ceremony followed by har- ness racing. We will also crown a new Fair Queen that evening. We have a lot of great entertainment lined up this year in the grandstand. Wednes- day and Thursday we will have truck and tractor pulls and Friday, Bull rid- ing. Saturday night is Diamond Rio followed up by the Demo Derby’s on Sunday. We have several free acts throughout the grounds, All Star Stunt Dog Show, The hilarious Pork Chop Revue, Mr D’s House of Magic, Zoli’s Chainsaw Wood Carvings and more. There are also lots of great free shows at the Entertainment Pavilion day and night. On Wednesday, special guest Orion Samuelson will be live at the Pavilion from noon to 1:00 p.m. Please check out our new website this year, www.boonecountyfair.com, for a complete schedule and more information on the various events and such. We have Skinner’s Amusements for all the thrilling rides. Plus lots of displays to be enjoyed from home grown to handmade. As I write this letter I’m beginning to smell all of the delicious fair foods we can’t wait to enjoy. Don’t forget kids, Wednesday and Thursday we have Midland States Bank’s Kids Day games at 10:00 a.m. Good old fash- ioned fun! With reduced midway rides in the afternoon. Also Thursday is Seniors Day for those 65 and older, it’s free admission to the fair. Come one, come all and hope you are as anxious to see us as we are to see you!! Many Thanks, Lyle Lee, President

[email protected] I’ve spent a lot of time talking to homeless Or for that matter what standing does a local folks. At one point in 1988, I went and lived on the streets with them just so I could share with readers the challenges they face. My observation: Many end up panhandling to feed an addiction. Also, because of addiction or mental illnesses, some have become unemployable and use panhandling to survive. Now, please note the homeless folks I’m talking about aren’t the ones sleeping on the sofas of friends or residing in a temporary shelter because of a missed rent check. I’m talking about those sleeping on sidewalks. It’s important to remember that not all homeless people panhandle. And not all panhandlers are homeless. But there is a pretty big overlap between the two. Interestingly enough there is a business a little over a block from Kessler’s record store that is taking a radically different approach. Café Moxo is showing the downtrodden hospitality. “I believe in the Golden Rule: treat others the way you would like to be treated,” said Brandon Hughes, who manages the Springfield restaurant. On many mornings, the café is full of business people, politicians, lobbyists and community power brokers eating breakfast, sipping coffee and opining on the problems of the world. And often sitting among them is an older woman talking to herself. She always has a hot cup of coffee and warm meal in front of her. “She pays us when she can. When she can’t, we make sure she has something to eat,” Hughes said. This approach of radical hospitality reflects the philosophy of the restaurant’s owner, Mark Forinash. During the pandemic, the restaurant partnered with Springfield businesses and gave away thousands of sack lunches to those in need. “At the end of the day, we are all people and we all deserve to be treated with dignity and respect,” Hughes said.
