Endorsement Committee This year, we formed an Endorsement Committee comprised of 18 members plus additional Libertarian leadership; the “Committee.” The Committee members conducted their own independent research on each of the candidates and asked them questions at our events. The Committee members took notes and made recommendations on grades and endorsements. The Libertarian Party of Nevada hosted "Speed Dating" events over 2 days at different venues in Las Vegas. The goal was to meet as many candidates as possible in a format similar to speed dating. LPNevada endorsed Candidates in non‐partisan races and graded Candidates in partisan races for the 2014 General Elections. Most organizations do not get one‐on‐one interaction with the candidates; we felt this is important. Endorsements and Grading Non‐Partisan candidates received either a positive (thumbs up) or negative (thumbs down) endorsement from the Committee. Partisan Candidates received a grade of 1 to 5 stars. Candidates who received 1 star were not very Libertarian and candidates who received 5 stars were very good in regards to their position on issues important to Libertarians. The purpose of the Roundtables prior to the election had been engaging members with candidates and providing legislators with information around our experiences as educators. The focus now is to bring our Legislative Agenda for the 2013 Session to our representatives. Three engagements have been held this month. Educators met with Assemblywoman Spiegel at White MS, Assemblyman Wesley Duncan at Deskin ES and Assemblywoman Fiore and Senator Hammond at May ES. There is one more Engagement scheduled on January 31 st at 3:30 with Senator Mark Hutchison at Cimarron Memorial HS. Wellstone Training The training was held on January 4 th and 5 th . The purpose was to engage and train leaders to be the front line organizers around our issues (IP1 Funding, Evaluations, ELL, “RECESS” and Class Size). Eighty- nine educators were prepared to begin the task of bringing 3,000 voices to the steps of the Capital. 2-25-13 Education Day at the Legislature Across the county teachers are making plans to take our issues public. PLAN uses research, public education, leadership development and grassroots organizing to build power and create more humane solutions to Nevada’s problems. Our mission is to build collective strategic action among coalition partners in order to deepen democracy and achieve greater social justice in Nevada. Western States Center has been at the forefront of building a progressive movement and just society since 1987. Our mission is to build progressive movements for social, economic, racial and environmental justice in eight western states. Cover Photo: istockphoto INTRODUCTION Nevada has rich and complicated history around racial equity that continues today. In 1864, the Nevada’s first state constitution stated that only White men were able to vote. Before that as a territory, Nevada prohibited Non-whites from providing testimony against Whites, and the law prohibited cohabitation or inter-marriage between races. By 1870, Nevada had the largest immigrant population of any state in the country, yet in 1900 the census shows only 134 African Americans lived in the state.1 The limited recognition and rights of these communities during Nevada’s early history serve as a reminder of how far the state has come.
