Information about Meditation Centers and other important places in Sri Lanka for visiting Western Buddhist lay practitioners. Updated: January 2005. Introduction In Sri Lanka there are many meditation centres and monasteries, only some of these are suitable for Western Buddhist lay practitioners who do not intend to become monastics or stay long time in the country. The following information is particularly intended to western lay buddhists who are new to Sri Lanka and who wish to stay in a meditation centre in Sri Lanka for a limited period of time. The centres have been arranged according to districts. A separate paper, much more extensive, has been written for Western bhikkhus, those who aspire to become bhikkhus, or are very serious about their practise and are intending to stay a longer period of time. It is called: “Information about Meditation Centers, Forest Monasteries, and other important places in Sri Lanka for Western bhikkhus and serious lay practitioners. If one would like to visit a forest monastery during one’s stay in Sri Lanka then this last paper will provide one with useful information. The forthcoming book “Sacred Island” by Ven. S. Dhammika (to be published by the B.P.S.) gives exhaustive information regarding ancient monasteries and other sacred sites an pilgrimage places in Sri Lanka. The best places for those who are new to Sri Lanka and wish to do a retreat are the ones given under the Colombo District and Kandy District headings, i.e., Kanduboda Vipassana Meditation Centre, Kanduboda New Meditation Centre, Nilambe Meditation Centre, Pāramitā International Meditation Centre, and Dhammakū2a Vipassana Meditation Centre. -

In this connection, we would like to bring to the attention of your Excellency’s Government information we have received concerning alleged attacks and violence against Muslims in Sri Lanka since April 2017, including attacks against businesses, places of worship, property and homes. It is alleged that such violent incidents have been instigated by the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) leadership, including as a result of inflammatory anti-Muslim rhetoric used by BBS Secretary General Mr. Galagoda Gnanasara Thero, in his recent speeches. The BBS (Buddhist Power Force) is a local group that promotes extremist Sinhala-Buddhist nationalism. Violent attacks against religious minorities in Sri Lanka, including Muslims, instigated by BBS and other extremist groups, was the object of a previous communication sent to your Excellency’s Government in 2014 (LKA 6/2014). We thank your Excellency’s Government for its reply to the communication, received on 6 December 2014. According to the information received: Since April 2017, a number of incidents of violence and intimidation of Muslims have been reported in different parts of Sri Lanka. -

Session III – Forest and Natural Resource Management 314 Spatial and Temporal Changes of the Greenery of Colombo City Wickrmasinge L.S. 1*, Ranwala S.M.W. 2 and Subasinghe S.M.C.U.P. 1 1Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Nugegoda, Sri Lanka 2Department of Plant Sciences, University of Colombo, Colombo 03, Sri Lanka *[email protected] Abstract Plans for landscaping of the City of Colombo are now in place and it is of timely important to study the spatial distribution of the vegetation cover and its pattern of change occurred through the past to identify the priority areas for restoring and revitalizing the greenery. This study was therefore focused on mapping the vegetation cover in 47 Wards of the Colombo City for the years of 1956, 1982, 2001 and 2010 using aerial photographs and IKONOS satellite maps. The present work was also involved the evaluation of the percentage extents of vegetation cover and its rates of change in each Ward. According to the resultant maps, a gradual decline of green cover percentage was depicted for the study period. The green cover of the study area was 35.7%, 32.2%, 31.5% and 22.2% in 1956, 1982, 2001 and 2010 respectively. In 2010, the highest green cover (49.65%) was reported from Narahenpita Ward and only three other Wards (Kirulapona, Cinnamon Gardens, and Thimbirigasyaya) showed the green cover above 30%. Ten Wards (Kochchikade North, Kochchikade South, Grandpass North, Masangasweediya, Panchikawatte, Fort, Gintupitiya, New Bazar, Maligakanda, Aluthkade East) had green cover less than 10% in 2010. -
