REDISCOVER THE LETTER TO THE GALATIANS

Much of the New Testament includes various letters attributed to St. Paul that are addressed to different early Christian communities. Every church had their own set of blessings and challenges. In this First Sunday of Lent, Paul’s Letter to the Christian converts in Galatia can provide some important spiritual insights for us. In this letter, Paul addresses some of the extremes that the Galatians were falling into. Many in that church community were questioning his authority and leadership because of their scrupulosity. These people were concerned about the old laws to the point where genuine spiritual growth was not taking place. On the other hand, some Galatians were too loose in their spiritual and religious practices. During this season of Lent we want to set realistic goals that achieve positive spiritual growth. We do not want to be too lax, but we also do not want to be overly rigid as well. In the six chapters of this letter, Paul uses different tones to convey his message to the Galatians. We are given the famous line, “O stupid Galatians” (Galatians 3:1)! However, Paul also encourages good works and selflessness, “bear one another’s burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). To love God and to love our neighbors are the greatest commandments. Freedom is a major theme of this letter, and Paul wants us to be free of things that prevent us from having the genuine love and freedom we find in God. This letter is written with a lot of passion; Paul’s message is of great importance. Through fasting, almsgiving, and , may we find the true and lasting freedom of God throughout this Lenten Season.

FAITH FORMATION

Children’s Weekly Gospel Reflection On this first Sunday of Lent, we hear a short reading from the Gospel of Saint Mark, which gives a brief account of Jesus’ forty days in the desert. During Lent, we seek to strengthen our resolve to resist temptation. However, God does not expect us to do this on our own. God helps us, giving us the Holy Spirit in Baptism. God also gives us the community of the Church to help us.

Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It's a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fast- ing. We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ's will more faithfully. We recall the waters of baptism in which we were also baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.

Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to prac- tice self-discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God's gifts—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. As St. reminds us: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." (Catechism of the , no. 2446).

A Brief Examination of Conscience Based on the Ten Commandments

I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange Gods before me. Have I treated people, events, or things as more important than God? You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. Have my words, actively or passively, put down God, the Church, or people? Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day. Do I go to Mass every Sunday (or Saturday Vigil) and on Holy Days of Obligation (Jan. 1; the Ascension; Aug. 15; Nov. 1; Dec. 8; Dec. 25)? Do I avoid, when possible, work that impedes worship to God, joy for the Lord’s Day, and proper relaxation of mind and body? Do I look for ways to spend time with family or in service on Sunday? Honor your father and your mother. Do I show my parents due respect? Do I seek to maintain good communication with my parents where possible? Do I criticize them for lacking skills I think they should have? You shall not kill. Have I harmed another through physical, verbal, or emotional means, including gossip or manipulation of any kind? You shall not commit adultery. Have I respected the physical and sexual dignity of others and of myself? You shall not steal. Have I taken or wasted time or resources that belonged to another? You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Have I gossiped, told lies, or embellished stories at the expense of another? You shall not covet your neighbor’s spouse. Have I honored my spouse with my full affection and exclusive love? You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods. Am I content with my own means and needs, or do I com-pare myself to others unnecessarily?

Does it matter what leg you kneel on when genuflecting?

Genuflection is an act of devotion that literally means “to bend the knee.” For many Catholics, it’s an almost automatic gesture that we perform before entering our pew or row of seats at Mass. But, like many of the symbols and gestures of our faith tradition, genuflecting can also be an invitation for deeper reflection. The practice of “bending the knee” is an ancient way of recognizing the presence of someone greater than we are. It has been said that the practice dates back to the time of Alexander the Great, but it became a common part of etiquette in the royal courts of the Middle Ages. From throne rooms and palaces, it was a small step to genuflecting, becoming part of the devotional lives of Christians who used this secular gesture as a way of recognizing the presence of the One who is King of Kings, especially in the Eucharist. In our tradition, although many have been taught or prefer to genuflect by placing their right knee on the ground, there is no prescribed way to genuflect. This is especially important to keep in mind if physical limitations or age make certain movements difficult for us. Today, Catholics are asked to genuflect in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament (whether in the tabernacle or exposed on the altar during eucharistic adoration). So, while it has become second nature to genuflect before entering your seat in church, we should pay attention to where the Blessed Sacrament is kept in each church or chapel we visit, and genuflect in the direction of the tabernacle where the Blessed Sacrament is kept. In churches or chapels in which the tabernacle is in a separate space, we are invited to simply bow toward the altar. ©LPi
