welcome from Anthony

This publication was designed in-house at Welcome 3

For centuries Portsmouth Cathedral has been a beacon for people on land and at sea, helping them navigate the passage of time with faith and confidence in God. It is a building of simple, enduring beauty and a vibrant, inclusive, and lively community which has a positive impact on the common good in our parish, as well as the welcome City and Diocese of Portsmouth. Our Cathedral Vision renews our commitment to be a community always seeking God’s will. It affirms the good thanks of past and present, including the outstanding work of all our volunteers, whilst from dean also seeking to grow and develop through new projects and ways of working. Central to our work and mission is the vital and urgent need to become financially sustainable. The events of the past year have been difficult for us all. Now is the time to come together with Anthony generous hearts to ensure that Portsmouth Cathedral has the funds we need to meet the challenges and opportunities of today and the years to come. We have set ourselves the goal of doubling congregational planned giving over the next five years. This ambitious, but we believe realistic aim, will be central to closing the remaining gap between our income and spending levels. Alongside this, the Cathedral will continue to increase commercial and fundraising income to replace the significant external support we currently receive for some of our lay staff, which is due to expire by 2023. As we head towards our centenary in 2027, we are excited about the future, and invite you to play your part in helping us deliver the wide- ranging work, worship and witness of Portsmouth Cathedral.

The Very Reverend Dr. Anthony Cane

Our Vision for Portsmouth Cathedral

For over 800 years there has been a place of worship dedicated to St Thomas of Canterbury on the site where Portsmouth Cathedral stands. Throughout our history as a chapel, parish church and now parish church Cathedral, our building has been a place of welcome, inspiration and encounter with the living God. We have a long and proud history of serving our local communities across our parish, the city, and the Diocese of Portsmouth.

As we look to the future and the centenary of becoming a Cathedral in 2027, we have prayed and refl ected on how Portsmouth Cathedral can faithfully fulfi l our calling to serve God and those around us.

Our vision, which will guide all our work for the coming years, is to be:

“Portsmouth Cathedral: A beacon and safe haven, anchored in jesus Christ”

How have we developed this vision?

Dean Anthony and a group of clergy, staff and lay members of the Cathedral community have been working on the vision for over a year, supported with advice from an external consultant provided by the Church of . We shared a draft version with the Cathedral community in February and March 2020 to hear your views. Thank you to everyone who took part, your feedback has been invaluable in refi ning our plans. Inevitably, work on the vision has been slowed down by the Covid-19 pandemic. With the gradual easing of restrictions, we are now able to focus on the vision in earnest.

Caring for God’s creation is a vital part of our Christian calling, and one of the greatest challenges facing our Eco generation. Portsmouth Cathedral is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and Church ensuring that everything we do from worship to outreach is sustainable and responsible, safeguarding God’s earth for future generations. We have already made good progress. We generate some of our own energy from solar panels and are the first cathedral in the world to install a fuel cell. We have reduced our energy usage by upgrading to LED lighting and modernising the heating systems in Cathedral House. The Cathedral also participates in the FairTrade scheme. Our work has been recognised by the national EcoChurch project, with the cathedral being awarded with a Bronze award. We now want to improve our care for creation further and will actively work to achieve EcoChurch Silver status and then Gold status. This will involve managing our buildings and grounds in an even more environmentally friendly way, more teaching, prayer and community action around care for creation, and encouraging our Cathedral community to adopt more environmentally friendly lifestyles.

Portsmouth Cathedral celebrates 100 years of being a Cathedral in 2027, which also marks the centenary of Portsmouth becoming a city. We look forward to celebrating this landmark milestone with old and new members of the Cathedral community and the wider city. As well as special programmes of events and services, we will also plan any physical changes we need to make to our buildings and grounds to ensure they support the mission of Portsmouth Cathedral over the next 100 years.

Frequently asked questions

We want to take the opportunity to respond to some of the most common questions we hear about the Cathedral fi nances.

The Cathedral costs lots of money

Our Cathedral Choirs and Music Department have a much lower annual spend than most other Cathedrals (by hundreds of thousands of pounds in some cases). They are particularly good value-for-money when you consider that each year we train over 50 choristers (far more than most Cathedrals), 6 Choral Scholars and 1 , and provide very valuable employment for local professional singers. The Music Department also works with over 1,000 school children a year through our singing outreach project, Cathedral Sing. Choir tours and other trips and treats are not paid for by the Cathedral but by fundraising events held by the Portsmouth Cathedral Choir Association.

The encourages Christians to follow the Biblical principal of tithing and to give away 10% of their income – 5% to their church and 5% to other charitable organisations. We believe that giving is a joyful calling through which we can make a difference in the world and fi nancially support the building of the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.

‘ “But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to make this freewill offering? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you” ’ 1 Chronicles 29:11

We give out of love for our families, our friends, our neighbours near and far, and the whole of creation. Through fi nancial giving, we come to understand more deeply the inestimable gifts we have received from God, and enter into a deeper relationship of gratitude with our Creator. Finally, we give trusting in the knowledge that God will provide for us, come what may. We know that everyone has different fi nancial circumstances. Your value to God and as a member of our Cathedral community will never be affected by your ability to give fi nancially. Nevertheless, we ask that you prayerfully consider your fi nancial support of Portsmouth Cathedral.
