THORN EMI A great corn pany supporting great rugby A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION The Cou nt y Championship is still an essential part of the Rugby Football Union's playing structure.lt allows players at ail club levels to achieve representative honours. Let us hope that ail our club and County officiais will help to make this a memorable Championship year. Alan Gri msdell A MESSAGE FROM THORN EMI This is the second season that the THORN EMI County Championship is to be played underthe revised format; based on a Divisional system for the initial rounds, the Semi-Finalists come from each ofthose Divisions. Last season saw some very fine rugby in the initial rounds; the Lancashire v Yorkshire game was particularly exciting - but this is what one expects at the 'Sattle of the Roses'! There were many other examples of exciting matches, where local nvalry was once again renewed . This new season will undoubtedly see some Counties out to avenge last year's defeats - but more importantly, many old friendships will be renewed and new acquaintances will be made. THORN EMI isdelighted to continue its sponsorshipofthe County Championship forthis-the eighth season. The message from Alan Grimsdell, this year's President ofthe R.F.U ., clearly illustrates the importance which the County Championship still holds within the structure ofthe game. We hope that our assistance will help the R.F.U. in their aim to produce a successful English XV, especially with the inaugural World Cup to be played next year. THORN EMI warmlythanks ail the players, officiais and spectatorswho support the Championship, and wishes ail concerned, every success for this season, knowing full weil that you will enjoy your rugby. Now I have been entrusted with updating that chronicle. While obviously the emphasis will be on the events of the last twenty-five years - the most momentous period in the history of rugby union - as a tribute to the founding fathers, the first chapter of the original history will yet again appear. While it would not be practical to include a detailed history of the first 100 years chapter two is a brief resume of the achievements of the first fifty years and likewise chapter three embraces the significant events of the second fifty years in the illustrious history of one of Ireland’s great sporting institutions. There follows the detailed history and achievements, and they were considerable, of the last twenty five years. I owe a considerable debt of gratitude to many people for their help during the compilation of this book. In that regard I would particularly like to thank Noel Walsh, the man with whom I liaised during the writing of the book.

“For anyone who is interested in looking beyond the names, the dates, the half-truths and the mythologies and entering the realm of rugby’s place in our history, this is a must read.” — Chris Laidlaw Rugby is New Zealand’s national sport. From the grand tour by the 1888 Natives to the upcoming 2015 World Cup, from games in the North African desert in World War II to matches behind barbed wire during the 1981 Springbok tour, from grassroots club rugby to heaving crowds outside Eden Park, Lancaster Park, Athletic Park or Carisbrook, New Zealanders have made rugby their game. In this book, historian and former journalist Ron Palenski tells the full story of rugby in New Zealand for the first time. It is a story of how the game travelled from England and settled in the colony, how Ma¯ori and later Pacific players made rugby their own, how battles over amateurism and apartheid threatened the sport, how national teams, provinces and local clubs shaped it. But above all it is a story of wing forwards and fullbacks, of Don Clarke and Jonah Lomu, of the Log of Wood and Charlie Saxton’s ABC, of supporters in the grandstand and crackling radios at 2 a.m. Ron Palenski is an author and historian and among the most recognised authorities on the history of sport, and especially rugby, in New Zealand. He has written numerous books, among them an academic study, The Making of New Zealanders, that placed rugby firmly as a marker in national identity. Contents Acknowledgements 9.

Our connection goes back to 2002 when Chris Palmer (Cuffley RFC) introduced us to both Bob Weston (Chairman) and Stuart Thomas (Gr Finance Dir) and since then we have had a most fantastic relationship. We are so grateful for their incredible support whether on the field, in the clubhouse, on the golf course and of course helping to finance the amazing growth we have witnessed over the past 10 years in the playing numbers. There is no question that if we hadn’t had such generous financial support from them then the game of rugby would not be in such good health in Hertfordshire. During this period Herts Rugby has seen success on the field as follows, 2012 County Champions, 2012 U 20’s Jason Leonard Trophy, 2011 County Championship finalists, 2009 County Shield finalists and 2015 County Shield Champions. For a small county we fight well above our weight and this is down to superb preparation which couldn’t happen without sponsors of the like of Weston Homes.

LANCASHIRE COUNTY RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17 THE SECRETARY’S OPENING REMARKS As ever my first task in my report is to thank the outgoing president, Tom Fitzgerald. I have worked closely with Tom for many years and have only the highest respect for him and the professionalism he conducts County business with. Tom has been the cornerstone of the day to day running of rugby in this County and has been instrumental in the formulation of new initiatives that have put us in a position where a lot of our work is seen as best practice. These include our Academy, Coach mentoring schemes and training conferences. With his close contacts and networks he has managed to secure some great players and leaders to deliver these schemes. Having spoken to Tom I know how much over and above his regular volunteering work the office of President involves, with over 150 club visits and official engagements with many thousands of miles covered. Tom is greatly supported by his wife Angela, both of whom I consider tireless supporters of this County and I am extremely pleased to class them as the closest of personal friends. To Rugby matters, Our Senior XV have reached the final and other reports in this booklet will cover how they got there, at the time of printing we are in the run up to the final at Twickenham against Cornwall whom we expect to be strong with very vocal support. Thanks to Mark Nelson, Steve Rigby, John Greenwood and all the backroom team, along with players who give up their time at the end of very busy seasons to support senior Rugby in Lancashire.
