Chairman's report for AGM of Mariners Trust 3rd November 2014

This report covers the year ending 30th April 2014 & represents the 2nd full year of the re• launched Trust representing the supporters of Grimsby Town Football Club.

Again significant progress has been made in making the Trust a viable and respected organisation.

Major achievements during the year include;

• Increasing membership to around 815 • Having TWO Trust representatives elected to the Board of the Football club. Committing to raising at least £30,000pa to support GTFC Organised a very well received 'Evening with George Kerr' celebration the 79-80 Championship Launching the FA Cup Draw Tickets which raised around £1,000 for Youth Development The Managements of the Bars around the ground continued to be a huge and growing success & refurbishment continued a pace Race Nights & Quiz Sponsoring FITC courses in Immingham Alan Buckley book launch Dinner Regular ex players invited back to home games as Trust guests John McDermott Q &A Evening in Trust Bar Asked to speak and at the Supporters Direct/Football Supporters Federation joint summit at St Georges Park

Perhaps the single most important aim of the Trust movement is to get a greater say for supporters in the running of their football clubs. Since our re-launch we have worked extremely hard to develop this area and the resultant appointment of Trust representatives to the Board of the football club is a great achievement and shouldn't be under estimated.

We were charged with putting forward two candidates for interview so that the club could chose which one they felt comfortable working with. It is to the credit of both Jon Wood & Dave Roberts that the board felt that they were both creditable candidates, they couldn't separate them and appointed both!

I have listed some of the successes achieved by the Trust and none of those would have been possible without the drive and commitment shown by the Trust board & i would like to pay tribute to all of them.

I would also express some personal sadness that despite the positives, we haven't been able to achieve more. Despite our membership being regarded as significant by many, I cannot hide my disappointment at the apathy shown. I appreciate that in reality the only Trusts were membership has really taken off are those in crisis, I cannot see why our membership shouldn't be at least 3 times it current level. Why wouldn't everyone who comes to support the team join the Trust? Perhaps people just don't see the need? I certainly don't see it as an issue of cost at £1 per month for an adult.

The challenges facing the new board moving forward will be to try and engage with the supporters to get more buy in, not just in membership numbers but also in supporting events and initiatives. The Trust can only be as strong as its membership and perhaps we have failed in engaging with enough of them.

Perhaps the catalyst for getting many more fans on side will be if genuine progress is made in respect of a new stadium. I remain totally convinced that the only way GTFC can hope to get back to the levels enjoyed in the SO's 90" and early 2000's is to become an even greater part of the local community. A vibrant Trust can play a huge part in achieving that.

I certainly see it as of paramount importance if GTFC is to prosper moving forward & I sincerely hope all local politicians will see the significant boost a new stadium, with a high level of community facilities, will bring to not just the football club, but the whole area.
