2013-14 Men’s Basketball Media Info 2013-14 Morehead State Men’s Basketball Preseason Notes THE RETURNEES: Morehead State returns eight players from the 2012-13 season, including seniors Bakari Turner (8.2 ppg), Chad Posthumus (7.5 ppg, 6.8 rpg) and Drew Kelly (7.1 ppg). Junior Angelo Warner (10.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.5 apg) is the team’s top returning scorer. WE’RE READY TO GO: Morehead State’s roster also features two players who sat out in 2012-13 due to NCAA Division I transfer rules. Junior Karam Mashour joined the Eagles from UNLV, while sophomore Brent Arrington came to MSU from Mississippi Valley State. THE NEWCOMERS: Morehead State welcomes nine newcomers for the 2013-14 campaign. Six newcomers will be eligible this season. Seven newcomers have previous collegiate experience, and the group has a combined nine years of Division I playing experience. HIGH EXPECTATIONS: Morehead State’s 2013-14 recruiting class has been rated No. 1 in the Ohio Valley Conference by Hoop Scoop Online. The Eagle newcomers were also tabbed in the nation’s top-25 percent, checking in at 75th out of 329 Division I schools. THE MAN IN CHARGE: Sean Woods, who has been associated with six Division I men's basketball programs, is in his second season as the head coach at Morehead State. It is also his sixth season as a Division I head coach and 11th year of coaching at the collegiate level. WHO ELSE IS ON THE STAFF?: Associate Head Coach Dylan Howard, Assistant Coach Brian “B.J.” Ellis and Assistant Coach Beau Braden all return to the coaching staff for 2013-14. The program’s graduate managers are Martiese Morones and Jonathan Mattox. A CHALLENGING SCHEDULE: Morehead State will play 31 regular-season games in 2013-14. The slate features 10 dates against postseason teams from a year ago, including Pac-12 Conference member UCLA (Nov. 22) and Southeastern Conference opponent Tennessee (Dec. 23). SATISFYING THE HOME CROWD: Morehead State will play 14 regular-season home games, including non-conference match-ups against Conference USA opponent Marshall (Nov. 17), Horizon League member Wright State (Dec. 2) and Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green (Dec. 15). NATIONAL EXPOSURE IS BIG: Morehead State will play at least five games on national television in 2013-14 -- two on ESPNU, one on CBS Sports Network, one on Fox Sports 2 and one on the Pac-12 Networks. The final two rounds of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament will also be televised nationally. It is also his sixth season as a Division I head coach and 11th year of coaching at the collegiate level. Woods guided Morehead State to a 15-18 overall record and 8-8 Ohio Valley Conference mark in 2012-13, despite inheriting a program with just four scholarship players. The Eagles also made their eighth straight OVC Tournament appearance in his first campaign. Before taking the reigns at MSU, Woods led Mississippi Valley State to 50 overall wins and 44 Southwestern Athletic Conference victories from 2008-12. The 2011-12 Delta Devils finished 21-13 overall, 17-1 in the SWAC, won the conference tournament and advanced to the school’s fifth-ever NCAA Tournament. MVSU improved by 14 overall wins and 10 conference victories from his first season to his fourth. Woods was recognized as the 2011-12 SWAC Coach of the Year and earned the prestigious Ben Jobe Award, which honors the top minority coach in NCAA Division I men’s college basketball.

    HOUSE RESOLUTION 240 By Gilmore A RESOLUTION to recognize head coach Rick Byrd and the Belmont University men’s basketball team upon completing an extraordinary season. WHEREAS, the General Assembly is pleased to specially honor and commend those successful sports teams that, through their magnificent exploits, bring honor to Tennessee and serve as exceptional ambassadors of this State; and WHEREAS, the Belmont University men’s basketball Bruins are one such estimable team that achieved an extraordinary level of success during the 2011-2012 season, establishing a record of twenty-seven wins against only eight losses on their way to claiming the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship for the fifth time in seven years and advancing to the NCAA Tournament; and WHEREAS, the Belmont Bruins rolled through the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, prevailing over Jacksonville (76-62) and East Tennessee State University (69-61) to reach the Championship Game against Florida Gulf Coast University; and WHEREAS, having earned the regular season championship with a conference record of sixteen wins and two losses, the Bruins rebounded from an early thirteen-point deficit in the championship final to trail by only three points at the half; and WHEREAS, attacking their foes with a tenacious defense and skillful offensive sets, the Bruins devoured Florida Gulf Coast in the second half, as they outscored their opponents by seventeen points to claim a 83-69 victory; and WHEREAS, the win was their fourteenth consecutive victory and marked the end of their

The USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Committee issued the player invitations. Access to and participation in sports improves the lives of all students, and that is particularly true for girls and women. During this time of COVID-19, we are writing to remind you of your institutional obligation to uphold Title IX.1 We understand that these are trying times for collegiate institutions, including athletics departments.     Gopher Basketball 2008-09 Coaching Staff [ 71 ] Minnesota Basketball 2008-09 Gopher Basketball 2008-09 Head Coach Tubby Smith TUBBY SMITH Head Coach n March 23, 2007 Tubby Smith was announced as the 16th head bas - ketball coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers Men’s Basketball pro - gram. One of the most respected coaches in the country and a nation - O al champion was coming to Gold Country to lead the Gopher program. The excitement of bringing one of the top coaches in the country to the University of Minnesota was only matched by the satisfaction of welcoming one of the classiest individuals in the world of college basketball today to the Maroon and Gold. In his first season at the “U”, Smith took a team that had won nine games the season before to a 20-14 record. The Gophers finished sixth in the Big Ten Conference at 8-10 and were the sixth seed in the Big Ten Tournament. The 11-game improvement in the win column from the 2006-07 season is the largest season turn - around in school history and tied for the second-best turnaround in Division I in 2007-08. Also, the five-win improvement in conference play was the second biggest Big Ten turnaround in 2007-08. Smith came to Minnesota with a reputation for winning at the highest level not matched by many coaches in the country. In his 17-year career, he has claimed a National Title (Kentucky in 1997-98), made four “Elite Eight appearances”, nine “Sweet Sixteen” appearances, posted 15 straight 20-win seasons and has the 12th-best active winning percentage of any coach at the Division I level with a 407-159 record (.719).

While collegiate sports participation opportunities are rare and rationed, serving just 3% of the student body nationally, these opportunities provide considerable life-long benefits for participants in educational attainment, employment, and health. Yet despite the strong statute, interpreting regulations, and case law, women lag behind men by all measurable criteria, including opportunities to play, scholarship dollars, and treatment, and those gaps are growing at an unrestrained clip. In athletic scholarship dollars alone, women lose almost $1 billion dollars annually, solely because they are women. And as this memo establishes, the metrics for women athletes are getting worse, not better. In the past, sport leaders have put the burden for change on their students, 18–22-year-old women, to bring lawsuits in order to enforce Title IX; to get their schools to add more sports and treat them with the same dignity afforded men. The dramatic discrepancies between men’s and women’s sports programming cannot be resolved through federal courts. Indeed, it is unfair to expect these young women to shoulder the responsibility to remedy the systemic, intentional sex discrimination that fundamentally characterizes intercollegiate athletics. This legal memo, and our supporting documents and data from the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA), are part of Champion Women and the California Women’s Law Center’s efforts to remedy sex discrimination in athletic departments.

The squads earned the distinction as a result of being the highest‐placing teams with at least a 3.00‐cumulative GPA at the most recent NCAA indoor and outdoor championship, respectively. In addition, the USTFCCCA announced 90 squads as All‐Academic teams for the track & field seasons. Indoor Track & Field Scholar Team of the Year – BYU The Cougars of BYU finished as the third‐place team at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Track &Field Championships, scoring 34 points with the help of three event titles. BYU has compiled a 3.22 cumulative team GPA through the spring 2011 semester. National Indoor Scholar‐Athlete of the Year Miles Batty won the mile and anchored the distance medley relay to a national title. Batty is one of ten Cougars that were named last week as All‐Academic individuals for the 2011 track & field seasons. Batty was joined on the list by teammates Alden Bahr, Colby Barber, Tanner Emrich, Trevor Heiner, Cade Lindahl, Nate Ogden, Jared Rohatinsky, and Rex Shields.
