ICP

DUNEDIN • Ali Zani has been promoting the ICP within Hospital • Several Otago members heard Speech-Language therapist Christian Wright’s segment on Radio about language development : http://www.radionz.co.nz/audio/player/2425690 Canterbury ICP update: From Annette Rotherham • The Communication Festival held in Christchurch to celebrate the ICP recently was a big success. People appreciated the chance to share their stories about living with a communication disorder, the choir were fantastic, great team on the CHCH ICP working party that made the event possible. It would have been nice to have more people attend. Ruth Dyson & Stella Ward attended. Media coverage: Radio Live interview & on CTV news. Links:

1

• Radio live: this link takes you directly to the audio interview – info on the festival begins about 12 minutes into the recording (proceeded by a piece about girls’ with disabilities ‘right to be a princess’ ) • http://www.radionz.co.nz/audio/player/20154602 • CTV – the story begins at 14min 45seconds • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQZ5Zem1cM8&sns=fb • ICP will be continuing in 2015. 2014 has been about awareness, next year more action focused, hoping to influence The World Health Organization more, provide resources to developing countries etc. • ICP has a teleconference at the end of this week to confirm 2015 goals. So for now as therapists keep spreading the word about ICP! • A member suggested that it would be a good idea to have next year’s Awareness Week with an ICP theme WELLINGTON/NELSON • Mic currently in Palmerston North, coming to Wellington mid-November. • Libby updated the group that the International Group is currently focussing on defining the strategic direction for 2015 following a focus on Awareness in 2014. It has been decided that the Project will definitely continue beyond 2014, with ideas for NZ activity being development of links with the Asia- Pacific branch of WHO, and an approach to Parliament. CENTRAL • Hawkes Bay DHB and DHB– promoted ICP alongside SLT Awareness week • Palmerston North DHB (in conjunction with the Stewart Centre)– have the Mic for the “Communication after Stroke” day 14th November • Lower North Island DHB Regional Day – SLT’s took photos with speech bubbles. AUCKLAND • ‘Mic’ moved to Massey by bike – see photos on Facebook • The University of Auckland students created a video for ICP project – to be placed onto Auckland area SLTs email list

NORTHLAND

• Gay reported that she had explained the ICP at a staff meeting

SLT Awareness week September 15-19 DUNEDIN • The Otago members requested that Awareness Week resources were distributed earlier: perhaps a month beforehand? It can be costly and time- consuming for the Area Rep to distribute these to members around the district. Perhaps a solution would be to send a small number of resources to each member? CHRISTCHURCH • Annette thanked everyone for their contribution and patience as Awareness week was at the same time as NZSTA admin changes

2

• Members liked having the posters and postcards, more options • Lots of positive contributions for Awareness week from CHCH, for example, meeting people and promoting Awareness Week at the container mall in the central city, Burwood Hospital had a silent morning tea. • Annette asked members to email her if they have any feedback or ideas for Awareness Week next year. WELLINGTON/NELSON • Muno Richards met with Labour MPs at a lunch pre-elections and used the opportunity to discuss the ICP. • Marilyn Heine and Gay Williamson hosted a long lunch for retired SLTs. • Naomi Seow held a screening of Aphasia: the movie in conjunction with members of the local Aphasia Hub • Shannan Hennig held a screening of the movie A Certain Proof CENTRAL • Hawkes Bay DHB – Communication partnership training for staff members – educators were people with aphasia; Joined Maxine Bevin from Stewart Centre @ EIT for a Focus on Aphasia day; annual SLT quiz; Display board with speech bubbles • New Plymouth – Afternoon tea for present and past communication disorder patients; information sent around via intranet • Gisborne MOE – emails sent around staff re: communication and bilingualism; Combined with Loud Shirt day to have a morning tea – songs about SLT and games played. • Rachel Patrick – shared her t-shirt “You wish you could read this” (in phonetics) “but your not a Speech Language Pathologist” (in English words) • Palmerston North Hospital - Used the quiz that Hawkes Bay DHB had kindly sent – email was sent via intranet. • Palmerston North MOE – Speech bubble display and encouraged people at MOE to fill them in. AUCKLAND • The University of Auckland – students created a video • Timing of given election was not great. • Images and postcards were great – easy to attach to social media. NORTHLAND • Unfortunately no members were able to prioritise Awareness Week this year • Questions were raised around the postcards given out with regard to o The intended purpose – to be handed out on an individual basis? To be posted (too costly)? To be dropped into letter boxes (takes too much time)? Too much writing on some of them? o Whether members were involved in the decision making around the postcards o Gay stated that she would place the postcards around the kindergartens she works with. • In the past posters and stickers have been useful

3

• Discussion occurred around what Northland might do next year, with the suggestion that the earlier things were planned, the less work might need to be done closer to the time

Programme Accreditation Committee (PAC) PAC is looking for a representative from the Health field to take up a dedicated position on the committee. The role would suit a Health leader but does not require an academic position. If you would like to be nominated please contact Brigid McNeill at: [email protected]

DUNEDIN • The NZSTA sent a memo about the PAC role in August and suggested members contact Colette to discuss the requirements of the role or had any questions [email protected]. • The Otago members thought a brief outline of the role would be helpful for members to determine if they would like to pursue this opportunity further. WELLINGTON/NELSON • Helen feedback on her experience in this role – peaks and troughs in terms of workload. Encouraged interested members to talk to Brigid in the first instance about the scope and extent of the role.

Ethics Principles and Rules document Please read the document attached with the agenda and discuss if you have any further comments to make. Feedback should be received by Brigid McNeill at: [email protected] by October 18th. DUNEDIN • The Otago members were interested in the NZSTA’s position in situations where there could be a conflict of interests between Employer policies and procedures and client wellbeing/outcomes WELLINGTON/NELSON • Members were encouraged to review this document, especially in the context of our recent discussions around the expectations of therapists where more than one SLT is involved in a case. • Libby and Helen have provided some feedback, particularly around the wording with regards to supervision expectations and the process for resolving complaints. In general, we feel that the wording around SLTs working collaboratively should provide an avenue to cover the situations that led to the development of the local level agreement. Members were reminded that this local level agreement was not endorsed by the NZSTA as this situation has been covered by the updated Code of Ethics.

criteria for service in this region – highlights a gap in the service to this population locally. • Marja had received contact from an App developer offering a free trial in exchange for a review in CM – Brynlea, Heather and Sarah volunteered to provide some feedback. • Helen provided feedback from Health Leaders’ Forum: o Concerns discussed in this forum about the number of new graduates and the challenges to finding work. One of the key barriers seems to be the requirement under the MRA to be a full member, which requires new graduates to have worked in NZ for at least a year before applying to work overseas. There is some work pending to examine whether it would be possible for this preliminary year to happen overseas. o No current application for Registration under the HPCAA. As it has been some time since this was discussed with the membership, the general feeling from Exec is that this should be re-mooted with the members before any further action is taken. Members were encouraged to be engaged in any discussions around registrations that arise. Catherine encouraged the EC to talk to other professions that have been successful in the last few years, as there are some technical and scientific professions who have succeeded in becoming registered. • The following resources/websites were suggested: o www.aphasiatherapyonline.com – free website for low level aphasia therapy o www.sltinfo.com o Australian Aphasia Pathway: http://www.aphasiapathway.com.au/ o www.praacticalaac.org o NZSL online dictionary: http://nzsl.vuw.ac.nz/ CENTRAL • Voice Print – Jodi White discussed Palmerston North Hospital using this for LSVT for getting the high/low pitches on computers. Can be licensed for multiple computer. • Puppet Pals –an ipad app for social skills that Rachel Patrick has found useful.

AUCKLAND • CPD Log – discussion re NZSTA contribution – this could be as simple as emailing comments to the chair of an area rep meeting if you cannot be there, or commenting on a document. See FAQs in Communication Matters.

NORTHLAND • General discussion occurred around the Local Level Agreement regarding Dysphagia practice. Loraine Hamm (Child Health, Whangarei Hospital) expressed her appreciation of the support she has received to date from Ministry of Education SLTs with regards to the implementation of feeding plans. • Websites:

Communication Matters Please consider the following questions in relation to current and future editions of Communication Matters. Items for the Summer edition should be sent to the editor of CM ([email protected]) by 21 November for consideration for inclusion in the Summer edition.

WELLINGTON/NELSON • Marja asked whether people would find it useful to have a section on resources/websites/books etc – in general it was felt this would be a great addition to CM (much like sections at back of RCSLT/ASHA bulletins) • A number of local therapists planned to submit articles. • 2x local SLTs won awards at the recent 3DHB Allied Health quality awards (held between Capital DHB Hutt Valley DHB, and Wairarapa DHB. AUCKLAND • Willins Hill School – website – a great resource for session ideas, videos and other resources: http://www.literacyatwillanshill.net.au/ • Talklink – ‘tip of the month’ – www.talklink.org.nz • Sue Larkey website has useful content: http://www.suelarkey.co.nz/

Other Matters for Exec Please provide member name and contact details (if member consents) so that a member of the EC can follow-up directly and gather any further information to ensure that the member’s request, question or issue is appropriately & accurately responded to.

DUNEDIN • The Otago members would like clarification around CPD logs – currently logging everything as “other”. EC response: this has been fixed • Could there be the option of creating a PDF form of the CPD logs (to print), or a way of being able to search and scroll through the CPD logs like you can with online bank statements? EC response: We have proposed this to the software designers – print screen option at this stage is recommended • Margaret Gaudelius is planning to step down from her role as Area rep in 2015. She has asked members who are interested in the role to approach her for further information.

CHRISTCHURCH • CPD log audit, a number of members present were audited. They would like to have some feedback from the audit. What happens now? Who is it looked at by? Will it be looked at in terms of how things can be improved on in the future? EC response: All members who were audited have now received emails updating on the outcome as previously stated in Communication Matters. Admin were asked to email on receipt of hard copy CPD logs, yet there may have been a lapse as this happened during handover to BPS. The online logs were able to be accessed after the member had sent an email stating that they were ready for viewing. • Have the CPD online log issues been fixed? Members are unsure as some members still seem to be having issues. EC response: The outcome of this discussion has been included in Communication Matters several times – please refer to this or the FAQs re CPD logs on the website. • Is the NZSTA going to look into part time work considerations when it comes to CPD logs? Members are aware that this has been looked into in the past however. • How were the ‘must have’ categories in the CPD log decided on? • Annette commented on the NZSTA website- the exec feel it needs some work. Would any members be happy to answer some questions on what they would like to see changed? 3 members at the meeting volunteered. Annette to email them. CENTRAL • Members who were audited (Hayley McKenzie – [email protected]; and Kathryn Palmer-Donnison [email protected]) asked whether it is possible to have an acknowledgement of receiving these. An e-mail was sent saying the information had been sent from the SLT’s end but no acknowledgement of information being received. • Elisa Mynen ([email protected]) asked if an email of acknowledgment could be sent following all initial NZSTA correspondence to know that initial e-mail queries have been received. EC response: yes the acknowledgements should be happening. Apologies for any delay in this occurring. Acknowledgement responses should now be more prompt. • Continued discussion around CPD log being difficult and not clearly explained. o A number of members had difficulty around changing the start date. [email protected] NORTHLAND • Karen Sturge ([email protected]) raised a question regarding NZSTA “experts” – are they happy to discuss individual cases with the membership? This has been answered with the “expert” job description on the website – that they “can be contacted by membership on clinical and non-clinical issues as related to their area of specialism”. We look forward having access to the contact details of the experts once they are official.

9

• General questions were raised by members at the area meeting around where NZSTA is in the process of registration. Some feedback raised at the recent SLT Team Leader Forum was given regarding this, however the general consensus was that more transparency around where NZSTA is in the registration process, why it is taking so long and any feedback about why it has not been approved (if that is the case) would be appreciated.

General Query – are there pre-determined categories for Expert Adisor roles or can other categories be suggested by members. One member suggested a Leadership Advisor may be of use. EC response from Phillipa Friary: Great suggestion – thank you. At this stage we are asking SLTs to suggest what categories they would like to nominate themselves for rather than us determine the categories. There is likely to be dialogue during the application process if the EC think a slightly differently category is needed. We have requested for nominations in the area of child speech and language and adult speech and language acquired
