In 2015, UPA launched the first ELP Surgery Center, at Al-Sheikh Zayed Hospital at the Palestine Medical Complex in the West Bank, which features two new operating theaters to care for Palestinians with cleft lips and palates and other craniofacial anomalies. During the year, surgeons with the project performed 270 surgeries to help Palestinians with cleft lips and palates.

In the coming years, the Project plans to construct additional ELP Surgery Centers (in Gaza, Lebanon and Jordan), one per year; to schedule twice-annual international Embracing Life Delegations to help build the capacity of local Palestinian doctors and

With a grant from UPA, eighteen youth with intellectual disabilities participated in activities aimed at improving their health, nutritional awareness and quality of life through cooking sessions and aerobic exercise.

Partner: Arab Resource Center for Popular Arts (Refugee camps around Beirut, Lebanon)

Eighty Palestinian children from three refugee camps surrounding Beirut (Shatila, Mar Elias and Burj Barajneh) participated in painting and creative writing workshops funded by UPA. Resources in these camps have been stretched particularly thin in recent years due to the significant influx of Palestinian refugees from Syria.

Fifty hearing-impaired children ages 12 to 17 from all hallucinations, depression, screaming, and areas of Gaza, including refugee camps, participated bedwetting. 11 | Sara did not think she would ever become a musician, but her curiosity led her to apply to the new Gaza Music School. Discovering her talent, Sara is now one of the Gaza Music School’s best student pianists, traveling to participate in a concert and now playing with the Gaza Orchestra.

Following the 2014 Gaza war, Sara was one of the fortunate musicians to play the only grand piano in Gaza, which was repaired after sustaining damage during the war. Sara was featured in a BBC news documentary about that piano in which she shared her passion for pursuing music, saying, “All those classical composers actually fought a lot and went through a lot. Beethoven was deaf… They survived it with music, and so if they did that, then we can do that too.”

| 12 Partner: Ma’an Development Center (Area C of the Jordan Valley, West Bank)

Two schools, Ka’abneh and Fasayil Al-Foqa, both located in Area C in the Jordan Valley, received teaching supplies and educational resources. The division of the West Bank into Areas A, B and C was a result of the 1995 Oslo II Interim Agreement on the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which was only supposed to last up to five years. Most of the West Bank (60% of the land area) is considered “Area C” and is thus under full Israeli control. Palestinians who live in Area C face extreme movement restrictions and lack access to many basic services.

Partner: Palestinian Heath Care Committees (Hebron District, West Bank)

UPA supported a mobile clinic for children and women that served 20 impoverished villages – reaching 1,000 children and 1,000 women – in the Hebron District, providing assessment and treatment for anemia caused by malnutrition. With a slow rise in chronic malnutrition, dietary-related diseases and iron deficiency, children are more prone to stunting. The clinic’s preventive medical examinations will continue to improve the awareness of mothers about the possibility and consequences of malnutrition and anemia for themselves and their children.

With support from UPA, sixty preschool children living in Aqbet Jaber Refugee Camp engaged in creative activities and received uniforms, stationary, backpacks, nutritional meals and hygiene kits. The activities also encouraged children to overcome their shyness and helped them develop confidence to engage cooperatively with their peers. YWCA has been providing education and cognitive development services to Palestinian children, particularly from Bedouin families, in the camp since 1948.

UPA continued its support for the construction of outdoor playgrounds throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip in residential areas that lack green spaces for children to play. Al-Bayyara (which means “orange orchard” in Arabic) has converted dangerous lots into places of safety and fun, and employs dozens of construction workers.
