PRESIDENT’S REPORT – M.U.F.C. – 2013

The 2013 season for MUFC held great opportunities and expectations for the Blacks and the Blues.

The M.U.F.C. provides an opportunity for all levels of skills and enthusiasm to combine athletic endeavour with study or post-university work. In season 2013, the Blacks field three senior teams and one U19 team and the Blues fielded four senior teams and one U19 team. The M.U.F.C. plays an important role in helping country students integrate into university life. In the 2013 season, 321 players represented M.U.F.C. organised into 9 teams by more than 70 honorary officials and staff at a cost of more than $330,000.00.

Of course the M.U.F.C. has a long history of drawing players from the country, city, interstate and on occasion international students. The M.U.F.C. facilitates and promotes the possibility for sons to follow in the footsteps of their fathers both in sporting and academic endeavours.

The 2013 season commenced as one of the great pride for M.U.F.C.. The combination of the Blacks and the Blues made up one fifth of the Premier A division in the V.A.F.A. It was the biggest club in the amateurs.

The most significant game day event was the first Blues v Blacks Derby which was scheduled for the Anzac Day weekend draw. Anzac Day has a significant place in the history of M.U.F.C. On the urging and inspiration of Andrew Donald (General Secretary) the concept of the Commemorative Match was born. The ceremony was an all-inclusive University day with Melbourne University Regiment represented by Captain Michael Pianta. The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music was represented by Bridget Davies who led the assembled crowd in a rousing rendition of the national anthem. The bugler was Ian Douglas from the Victorian Colonial Rifles Association. The day was complete with the Senior and Reserve sides of both the Blacks and the Blues lined up side by side, all dressed in the traditional black and royal blue jumpers to join in the ceremony immediately before the commencement of the Senior match.

The Blues won the Anzac match. Ben Millard (Blues) celebrated his 200th game this memorable day.

The Blacks won the return derby later in the season. Both games were played in good spirit and the crowds on each occasion showed that the support of football at the University is alive and kicking.

The Blacks made a great return to Premier A Grade under the guidance of coach Matt Kempton. The Blacks almost achieved the back to back Grand Final appearance combination of A and B Grade. The season was a great achievement, consolidating the Black in A Grade after a preliminary final finish.

The Blues season was one of ups and downs. The mid-season retirement of coach Fergus Watts and a series of injuries to key players made an unstable platform for success. The ultimate result was relegation to B Grade.

On behalf of the M.U.F.C., I would like to thank Matt Kempton for his leadership of the Blacks and wish him well in his retirement to family life. I would also like to express our gratitude to Fergus Watts for his coaching commitment to the Blues. I thank Chris Reid for taking up the task of coaching Page 4 of 47 the Blues in mid-season and acknowledge his long term commitment to the Blues over many years in coaching and mentoring the players. The MUFC has a constant source of young talented footballers from its two U19’s teams. Congratulations and thanks to Steve Cerni (Blacks) and Jeff Scotland (Blues) for their management, coaching and guidance of the new U19 players that come to M.U.F.C. The role of coach of U19 teams at the University is a difficult task and Steve and Jeff have done a great job. Steve Cerni is retiring from coaching after a number of years of putting the foundation into the Blacks though his work with the U19’s.

The University of Melbourne fielded an Australian Rules football team at University Games held in Adelaide. M.U.F.C. organises and sponsors our University at the AUG. our team for this year was under the guidance of Steve Cerni for the second time. In 2012 he coached a champion team. In 2013 the challenge was to retain the championship. The University of Melbourne were runners up to the University of Western . On behalf of M.U.F.C., I congratulate the recipients of Full Blue: Sam Collins, Andrew Bell and Ryan Eade, and the recipients of the Half Blue: Daniel Zambon, Angus Locke and Tom Sharpe. I also thank all of the players who represented M.U.F.C. at A.U.G. and performed so well to achieve a great result.

I congratulate the players who represented the Victorian Amateur Football Association: V23: Marshall Rippon; U19’s: Simon Thomas, Harry Lahy, Charlie Craig and Ryan Eade; Seniors: Jack Watts, Peter Summers, Ross Young (B.O.G), Bede Mahon and Adam Pattison. The V.A.F.A. team to Ireland was represented by Ross Young (Captain), Bede Mahon (Vice-Captain) and Peter Summers. It is a great achievement for each of these players to represent the competition at the highest level.

The M.U.F.C. congratulates the award winners for 2013:

Blacks: Cordner Medal: Adam Pattison Brendan Keilar Medal: Bede Mahon and Tom Napier AM Smith Perpetual Trophy: Andrew Else

Blues: : Ross Young Chris Brown Trophy: Tony Simmons Ted McNamara Trophy: Chris Pyke

In 2013 the M.U.F.C. has expanded the ranks of life memberships with the addition of Gerry Westmore (Blues) and Andrew Jesse (Blacks). I congratulate and thank each of the new life members for their tireless and selfless contribution to the successful operation of the M.U.F.C..

In my 2011 report I stated: “The Pavilion remains the same”. In the course of 2013 the M.U.F.C. conducted its operations from builders’ huts and sea containers placed near the south eastern corner of the Oval. On the other side of the Oval a refurbished and renewed Pavilion has been constructed. It will be opened and operating for the 2014 season.

On behalf of M.U.F.C, I would like to thank Melbourne University Sport and Property Campus Services (particularly project manager Emily Dixon) for the support and efficient management of the Pavilion project. I also thank the numerous benefactors for the financial contribution to the refurbishment of the Pavilion. The hope and expectation is that the new Pavilion will be a source of pride and enjoyment for all who attend the M.U.F.C. games and functions.

Sadly the M.U.F.C. lost one of its favourite supporters and servants in Frank Henagan. Trinity College hosted a wonderful service in memory of Frank’s life at the College, the University and the Main Oval. Frank had the uncanny knack of being able to keep everyone he met in good humour and a positive frame of mind. All at M.U.F.C. have fond memories of Frank and he will be missed.

A number of M.U.F.C. players made significant milestones in season 2013. The 200 game club had the additions of Ben Millard (Blues) and Andrew Jesse (Blacks). The 150 game club ranks now include Dirk Heinz (Blues), Jack Heeley (Blacks) and the brothers Torney, Matt (Blues) and Andrew (Blacks). The Torney brothers have shown the true spirit of M.U.F.C. participation.

I would like to thank the committees of the Blacks and the Blues for their work during the year. The day to day operations of the respective teams takes a great deal of effort and dedication. The respective Committees have performed their task very well.

Finally, I thank the members of the Board for their work, advice and wisdom over the last year. In particular I would like to express my gratitude to Andrew Donald who approaches the role of General Secretary with enthusiasm and humour. He has assisted me greatly and quietly points the way forward. I would also like to thank Stephen Longley for his work as Treasurer and Public Officer.

I trust 2014 will be a successful season. The M.U.F.C. returns to excellent new facilities at the Oval. Cam Roberts takes charge of the Blacks. Quinton Gleeson faces the challenges of coaching the Blues in B Grade. I welcome both new coaches to the M.U.F.C. Each of them are long term members of the M.U.F.C.

Dream Large.

John Carmody M.U.F.C. President

University Blacks - Chairman’s Report

With the club back in Premier Division for the first time since 2008, season 2013 was a successful one for Blacks. While not being able to repeat the Premiership wins of 2012, the Seniors, Reserves and Thirds all finished in the top four at the end of the home and away season. In fact, the three teams were never out of the four, with the Seniors occupying first or second spot for 10 of the 18 weeks and the Reserves for 13 of the 18 weeks. The U19’s, who were relegated at the end of the 2012 season from Senior Division to Section 2, finished the year in sixth position, with 7 wins and 11 losses.

The club again fielded 4 teams in 2013. The total player number was 157, compared with 149 players in 2012. Again, there were a significant number of players who left the club at the end of 2012, namely 75 players, compared to the 99 from the previous year. New registrations totaled 84, compared to 60 in the previous year.

The Seniors played 39 players throughout the season, the Reserves played 49, the Thirds 65 and the Under 19’s 53. Of the 84 new registrations, 12 played for the Senior side, the standouts being Robert Humann (11 games), Broc McCauley (10 games), Peter O’Rourke (15 games), Adam Pattison (19 games and winner of the Senior B&F award, the Cordner Medal), Ben Saliba (7 games) and Brent Sheahan (7 games) The new senior players played a total of 89 senior games in 2013, from a team total of 440 games i.e. 20.2%

The Seniors lost 5 players from 2012. The biggest losses were David Batten (11 games in 2012), Dan Costello (16 games), John Delahunty (19 games), Jordan Foster (13 games) and Jackson Roder (10 games). These players totalled 69 games in 2012, from a team total of 440 games played i.e. 15.7%

The Reserves lost 15 players from their 2012 playing list but the addition of experienced players such as Isaac Anderson (14 games in 2013), Hamish Clemons (14 games), Scott Hisey (13 games), Andrew Kraefft (18 games), Clive O’Sullivan (16 games), Brent Sheahan (10 games) and William Van Der Vliet (10 games) kept the Reserves a very competitive side. These players totalled 159 games in 2013, from a total of 440 games played i.e. 36.1%. Andrew “Rusty” Else won the Reserves B & F, with Scott Hissey runner-up.

As is usually the case, the Under 19’s were almost a completely new team in 2013. Of the 53 players who played Under 19’s football, 47 were new to the club, with only 6 players from 2012 still eligible to play in 2013. Of concern is the fact that 26 Under 19 players from the 2012 side left the club.

In season 2013, the club won 55.2% of all games played i.e. from a total of 77 games played, 42 were won, 34 were lost and 1 was drawn. In season 2012, the percentage was 57.9% of all games played and 48.0% in 2011.

Five players reached significant milestones during the season in total games played with Blacks. Andrew Jesse joined a select few in reaching 200 games, starting as an Under 19 player back in 2003. Jack Heeley and Andrew Torney reached 150 games while James Cordner and Angus Drysdale played their 100th games.

Blacks’ Senior captain Bede Mahon had an outstanding season. He was placed third in the Cordner Medal, he shared the Brendan Keilar Medal with Tom Napier and, together with Adam Pattison, was selected to play in the V.A.F.A. senior representative side against a Victorian Country Football League team. To cap off his season, he was named vice captain the V.A.F.A. touring side to Ireland. Simon Thomas and Harrie Lahy were both named in the V.A.F.A. U23 side that played against a S.A.A.F.L. representative team.

UNIVERSITY BLUES

Team Report – 2013

University Blues - Chairman’s Report

Season 2013 was a tough year for the Blues. Being relegated from Premier Section in both the Senior and Under 19 grades is a bitter pill to swallow and a disappointing reality that we must face and respond to, in a way that reflects the character and strength of our club.

Despite the obvious disappointment there were still plenty of things that happened throughout the season of which the club can be very proud of. Notably the achievement of our Third XVIII, who lost only two games during the home and away season before falling short of the ultimate prize by only 20 points on Grand Final Day.

Congratulations to our Thirds coach Bob Girdwood, for instilling a great camaraderie within the team and of course to those who contributed on-field to another successful season for the Thirds.

Ultimately however, the fate of our club rides on the back of the Senior side and in 2013, six and half wins was simply not enough to keep us in Premier division. While the Senior side only finished two points adrift of eighth placed Collegians, the percentage gap of nearly 17 per cent meant that the club effectively knew its fate before the beginning of the final round.

As a club we found ourselves in a difficult position at the half way mark of the season with our Senior Coach, Fergus Watts, standing down to take up position in the goal square. Club Vice President and former long-time Senior Assistant Coach, Chris Reid, stepped in for the remainder of the season.

I thank Fergus for his efforts and commitment during his time as Senior Coach and as mentioned at the presentation night, I appreciated the maturity and integrity he showed during this tough time. Equally, I thank Chris for putting his hand up to fill the coaching role and ensure that the side could maintain some level of stability for the remainder of the season. The preparation and commitment shown by Chris was first rate and appreciated by all at the Club.

Eleven wins was not enough to lift our Reserves side into the finals and they finished in 5th place, missing out on September action on percentage.

Unfortunately the club will be losing the services of Andrew Briggs as Reserves coach as he takes up the senior coaching position with the Echuca Football Club. The Blues wish Andrew the best in his coaching endeavors and thank him for his effort and commitment throughout the season.

It was a disappointing season for our Under 19’s who finished ninth with three wins and 15 losses however the continual improvement throughout the season by the boys under coach Jeff Scotland was a credit to Jeff and all players. With the likelihood of having upwards of 14 “top aged Under 19’s” coming back to the Blues next year and with Jeff confirming that he will coach the side again, there is a real feeling of positivity around the Unders as they look ahead to 2014.

Once again it was the Blues Thirds who lead the way on-field in 2013. Under the close of eye of experienced coach Bob Girdwood, the Thirds developed a closeness and willingness to play for each other that was commented on by many at the club. The Thirds finished in second place on the ladder, just one win behind Old Xavs at the end of the season on 16 wins and two losses. Unfortunately this is how it ended on Grand Final day too, with the Thirds going down to Old Xavs by 20 points but not before a much improved showing from the semi- final encounter two weeks earlier.

While it was disappointing not to win the Premiership, the dedication, enthusiasm and skill showed by our Thirds during the season - especially in the finals - belied “Thirds” football standards and is a credit to all involved.

For the first time in our history the Uni Blues fielded a fourth senior side, filling the void of the bye in the Premier B Thirds competition created by an uneven number of sides. The “Royales”, as they became known, were born out of the sheer number of players that were training over the preseason and throughout the early rounds. Chris Pyke put his hand up to Coach the side and did a great job in what were, at times, trying circumstances.

In all, just over 160 players represented the Uni Blues on the field across five teams during season 2013. Developing, supporting, preparing and challenging in excess of 160 players to fight for a common goal is no small task. So along with the entire playing group, all of our coaches must be congratulated on their efforts and commitment throughout the year. Fergus Watts, Chris Reid, Andrew Briggs, Wayne Oswald, Dan Winkle, Mark Maddocks, Jeff Scotland, Bob Girdwood and Chris Pyke provided great guidance and direction to the playing group throughout the year. Well done and thank-you.

VOLUNTEERS

The Executive Committee deserves a great deal of acknowledgement and thanks for their behind the scenes work during the year, often having to juggle work and family commitments to help out the Blues. To Chris Reid (Vice President), Tom Hutchins (Operations), Justin Quill (Football Operations), Tom Wilcox (Commercial), Andrew Wilson (Commercial), Stephen Meade (Club Secretary), Liam Quin (Communications) Chris Maxwell (Parents and Families) and Will Hartnell and Hugh Vickers-Willis (Player Reps), the Club really appreciates the time and effort you were prepared to devote to the Uni Blues this year.

Due to interstate relocations, Tom Wilcox and Liam Quin will not be returning to the Committee in season 2014. We wish them all the best with their endeavors and look forward to seeing them back at the Blues at some stage in the near future.

The Executive Committee was greatly supported by the work of Bernie Angel as Treasurer. Bernie again took on this often thankless role and, as always, performed it with no fuss. The Club is very fortunate to have someone like Bernie balancing the books each year.

David Phefley, Football and Administration Manager, worked tirelessly throughout the season to ensure that our year in “temporary facilities”, was as smooth as it could be. It is a credit to Dave that his work is always carried out with such enthusiasm and dedication and Dave is a great asset to our club. This season however he was not the only Phefley that was heavily involved with the Blues. Dave’s daughter Jen, filled a number of roles throughout the year across all four senior sides and when Dave was absent on a four week trip overseas, Jen ensured that Dave’s many weekly tasks were completed with aplomb. Dave’s wife Helen was also a fantastic help in the canteen at home games, so 2013 was most definitely a Phefley family effort.

There are many match day and training support personnel who continue to devote their time and energy well beyond the call of duty. Special mentions must be made to Neil Turner and Tony Simmons for their continual help during trainings and on match day.

Tony’s dedication to hydration shown throughout the year, not only running water for two games every weekend but rarely missing trainings, along with his good humor and nature around the Club were some of the reasons behind Tony winning the Chris Brown Award for Best Clubman in to 2013. Congratulations and thank-you Tony.

The Thursday night team dinner is a much loved and appreciated part of the culture of the Uni Blues and is highly valued by all the players. While it would be difficult to measure the benefits of these evenings in any sort of tangible way, I have no doubt that it contributes positively to the overall camaraderie amongst the

playing group. Thank you to Tony McInerney and his team for their efforts and we look forward to the tradition continuing in the confines of our new Pavvy in 2014.

A big thank you must go to the medical team headed up by Natalie Collins and Brodie Doyle-Jones. Nat and Brodie’s team of dedicated physios and trainers, including Sugar Ray, were a delight to have around the club and the treatment and advice given was first rate. Thanks also needs to go to Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre for their ongoing support through the provision of a bulk billed Monday night clinic during the year. The club is very fortunate to have had access to this world class facility over many years and we look forward to continuing this relationship in the years to come.

SPONSORS, DONORS AND MEMBERS

The club would battle to survive without its sponsors. As costs associated with running an amateur football club continue to rise, the importance and value of our sponsors also increases. Our sponsors and donors are mentioned individually within the body of this report and I thank them all for their ongoing support and generosity.

To the Uni Blues members - thank you, not only for your financial contribution but for your support at games and in other areas of the Club. We had an amazing increase in membership this year and we hope to consolidate and grow this in 2014.

A special mention must be made to John and Sue North and Tony and Karin Heinz, who once again opened up their homes during the year to host various members of the Uni Blues Community. The continued generosity for our club shown by both families makes us realize how important and much loved the club is to so many people and for this we are very grateful.

2013 FINANCIAL ACCOUNTS

The 2013 year delivered a record profit figure of $37,934 for the University Blues, which is an amazing result considering the difficulties faced operating out of temporary facilities. Apart from our wonderful sponsors, donors and members as mentioned above, I must congratulate and thank the Uni Blues Auction Night and Ball organizers headed up by Emily Wadham, for another fantastic and successful event. To all those who so kindly donated various auction items – be they big or small – your support makes a difference.

While the success of the Auction Night deserves recognition, I think it timely to note that, going forward we move to ensure that we no longer rely on the Auction night to prop us up financially. We need to create a sound base of strong sponsorship and membership sources as well as other fund raising initiatives such as the ANZAC eve dinner held in 2013, to keep our Club financially secure.

AWARD WINNERS

Congratulations to all Team and Club award winners in 2013. The dedication and effort put in by each of you is a credit to yourself and a benchmark for others to follow.

Special congratulations to Gerry Westmore on becoming a Life Member of the Melbourne University Football Club. Gerry’s involvement with the Uni Blues began in 1973 when he played the first of his 156 games for the Blues before he hung up the boots in 1985. Since then Gerry has filled many roles at the club; from boundary umpire to team manager, ensuring that game day runs as smoothly as possible. Gerry is a very worthy recipient of Life Membership.

SEASON 2014

The 2014 season will provide the Uni Blues with many new challenges as we attempt to fight our way back to Premier division and it was with great pride and excitement at the presentation dinner, that I was able to announce Quinton Gleeson as our new Senior Coach who will lead us in this fight.

Quinton is by no means a stranger to the Uni Blues community, a former Club Captain and Woodrow Medalist, he represented the Blues in 175 games and lead the Club to our last senior Premiership in 2004. Quinton was always an enthusiastic and passionate player and we are sure that he will bring this enthusiasm and passion to his coaching.

Thank you to all that are involved with our great club and for the support that I received in my first year as Chairman. Nothing can be taken for granted in VAFA football and the challenges thrown to our club next year will have to be met with a united front. Each and every member of our wonderful club and community, will have to work harder, smarter and together in 2014 to ensure we reinstate the Blues to its rightful place.
