*The Environment Agency Assets team are currently proposing to revise the annual maintenance specification of the Machynys seawall in favour of a three year programme of improvement works which will extend the life of the existing defences to 100 years. Works being proposed involve the replacement of damaged sheet pile wall toe protection sections (Armorloc units) The reprofiling of 310m of embankment, and the spraying of the exposed lengths of sheet pile wall with a protective coating.

Llanelli was developed in the 19th century as a result of the local coal mining and tin plate industry. The decline of heavy industry and the silting up of the River Loughor led to the final closure of the docks in 1951.
