125 11-12-20-Student STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENTS Thursday, November 12, 2020 STUDENTS: Word of the Day (superkids.com): abdicate – “to give up or renounce (authority, duties, a high office, etc) in a voluntary, public or formal manner; resign.” ~~~~~~~ Did you have a fall sports banquet but did not receive your numerals? Please stop by the office – during a time when you are not in class – and pick yours up. ~~~~~~~ Are you a Meridian student who is taking classes VIRTUALLY? You can still join the bowling team – or any athletic team. Make sure to check the tryout/practice schedule – and have your sports physical taken care of. Questions? Call the office – 687-3302. ~~~~~~~ Girls Bowling – your practice/tryouts are Tuesday & Wednesday, 3:30-5:00pm next week. We are NOT practicing on Monday. Make sure you have your sports physical turned in before practicing. ~~~~~~~ Meridian Wrestling's last Preseason workout will be tonight, from 6-7:30, meet in the Lower MPR. The season officially begins Monday, 11/16. Practice will be in the Lower MPR from 3:30-5:30. ~~~~~~~ Michigan Education Association Scholarship Amount: varies (Last year, MEA awarded 50 scholarships totaling $49,000 - $1,200 scholarships to 28 new winners and $700 scholarships to 22 returning college students). Deadline: February 18 Eligibility Criteria . Dependent of an MEA member or MEA-Retired member in good standing . Graduate of a Michigan public high school or private high school that has an MEA bargaining unit. Will attend or is currently an undergraduate student of a Michigan public community/junior college, four- year degree-granting institution, or vocational training institution that grants a degree, certification or license. Those attending the following private institutions ONLY are also eligible: Baker College- Flint/Owosso; University of Detroit–Mercy; Adrian College; Finlandia University; and Albion College. (The aforementioned private institutions are existing local MEA affiliates.) . Note: Children of MEA officers, fund trustees, and MEA staff are not eligible. (A child of an MEA, MESSA or MEA-FS staff person is eligible if the other parent is an MEA member in good standing) Selection Criteria Priority is given on the basis of: . Academic achievement . If you drive to school and you do not have a registered space in the student lot on the north end of the building – you need to park in the lot on the south end of the building – nearest the new auditorium. Do not park in the student lot – those spaces have all been assigned. Your vehicle must be registered if you park on school property.     Michigan Department of Treasury 5479 (08-16) MICHIGAN GEAR UP Educational Award Fact Sheet Award Year 2017-18 Program Description Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federal program designed to provide early intervention services and programs to students in middle school and high school. The mission of GEAR UP is to significantly increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. MICHIGAN GEAR UP (MI-GEAR UP) targets low-income students in the state of Michigan providing them with support services to increase their opportunity to succeed in higher education at Michigan’s higher educational institutions. Educational Award Application Process Each participating MI-GEAR UP partner will be allotted a specific number of educational awards. They must provide a rank order list of 2017 graduating seniors who have successfully participated in the program for six years and met the nomination requirements. Only nominated MI-GEAR UP participants will be eligible to be considered for an educational award. The Michigan Department of Treasury, Student Scholarships and Grants (SSG), will provide educational awards to the highest ranked students based on the amount of educational funds available. The student is responsible for notifying SSG of a change of address or college choice. Program Limits Selected nominees may receive an educational award for up to three academic years to be completed within four years from the date of award. The maximum award amount a student may receive is $1,000 per year for at least half-time enrollment, which will be divided into equal amounts by semester or term.

    John P. Beck is an Associate Professor in the School of Human Resources & Labor Relations at Michigan State University. He previously served as associate director of the School, primarily in charge of two of the School's outreach units, the Labor Education Program and Union Management Initiatives. He also co-directs a project (with Karen Klomparens, the Dean of the MSU Graduate School), "Building Mutual Expectations and Resolving Conflicts in Graduate Education," on the use of interest-based conflict resolution approaches for graduate students and their faculty mentors. John holds degrees from Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. He worked for five years on the staff of the University of Michigan Labor Studies Center. He has taught labor studies on the community college level in both Oklahoma and Michigan and has taught history and education courses at the university level. Dwight Brady is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker who has produced numerous documentaries ranging from grey wolves to green energy. However, this is his first historically driven documentary. Professor Brady is a member of the faculty in the Department of Communication and Media Studies at NMU. Steven Brisson is director of Mackinac State Historic Parks. A sixth-generation native of the Upper Peninsula, he received a B.S. in history from Northern Michigan University in 1989 and a M.A. from the Cooperstown Graduate Program in History Museum Studies, Cooperstown, New York in 1992. His museum career began as a student assistant with the Michigan Bureau of History at the Michigan Iron Industry Museum and Fayette Historic Townsite.

    Michigan Department of Treasury 5257 (Rev. 02-17) Fostering Futures Scholarship Fact Sheet Academic Year 2017-18 Description The Fostering Futures Scholarship (FFS), a State of Michigan* program, provides scholarships to young adults who have experienced foster care. The State of Michigan works with individuals, community organizations, and businesses to encourage charitable contributions that go towards Fostering Futures Scholarship funds. Awards are paid directly to the students’ institution to assist with unmet need in one or more of the following categories: Tuition/Fees Room/Board Books/Supplies *State of Michigan departments that are involved are the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Michigan Department of Treasury-Student Scholarships and Grants (SSG), and Michigan Education Trust (MET). Application The application form can be downloaded from www.fosteringfutures-mi.com or the student can request an application by calling SSG toll free at 1-888-447-2687. The student is responsible for notifying SSG of a change of address or college choice. Students must complete an application annually during the open enrollment period. Program Limits FFS is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The maximum award amount is determined annually by SSG. Funding amounts vary based on need and any other financial aid the student is receiving. All future awards are subject to approved and available funding. Eligibility Student must have been in Michigan foster care due to abuse/neglect on or after their 13th birthday. Student must be attending a Michigan public or private degree-granting four-year college/university or a community college at least half time.
