SMITHSONIAN OUTREACH FOR K-12 GEOSCIENCE TEACHERS LOOKING FOR FUN AND ADVENTURE WHILE EARN ING COLLEGE OR PROFE SSIONAL GROWTH CREDI T? Join us in northern Wyoming for educational field workshops on PALEONTOLOGY, GEOLOGY, and MAPPING, led by professional geoscientists. Our workshops have become very popular with K-12 teachers who need college or professional recertification credits, and children’s book authors. The workshops meet in Shell, Wyoming. Shell is located 70 miles east of Cody, Wyoming and is only a two hour drive from the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It is situated in the midst of some of the most significant and impressive fossil- bearing rocks in . Several of the workshops will visit world-class dinosaur fossil-bearing localities with geoscientists who are currently conducting research on these deposits.

WORKSHOPS (see website for a full list of courses) July, 2011 ~ The History of Life Through Fossils The Bighorn basin in Wyoming is the setting for one of the finest, natural, teaching laboratories in the western hemisphere. Every major time period is represented by rocks and fossils. We will spend three days looking at both terrestrial and marine sequences that document the changing history of life during the last 600 million years. Teachers will be able to collect fossils for their classroom activities. Dr. Erik Kvale and Dr. Michael Brett-Surman will be the instructors. July, 2011 - Dinosaur Science – What you can, and CANNOT, know about dinosaur science. A three day field course, supplemented with classroom lectures, which will show teachers what we can, and cannot, know about dinosaurs. Participants will see dinosaur bones and footprints, visit fossil dig sites, and watch how professional dinosaur paleontologists reconstruct the life of the and . TV specials that misrepresent dinosaur science will also be discussed. Dr. Michael Brett-Surman will be the instructor.

See our website www.geo-sciences.com for workshop details.
