Congratulations to Jenna Copsey, Livvy Humphries and Zoe Davies who have all been awarded scholarships to The Maynard School as well. This is a fantastic achievement and is testament to the hard work and dedication shown from them all. Sammy Crook Head Teacher “Changes to our School Uniform policy” We have noticed, particularly after the Christmas break, that some students have returned to school wearing acrylic nails or nail varnish. Students are not allowed to wear false nails or nail varnish which is in line with other Devon Secondary Schools from a health and safety point of view. We have clarified this for students in assemblies recently and thank parents for their support in addressing any issues in this area. 2019 – Year 11 Exam Preparation Timetable Starting on Monday 25th February Year 11 are invited to attend exam preparation sessions in support of their build up to their final exams. Teachers will be covering exam skills specific to each subject, covering content material and practising exam questions and techniques. Each session lasts for 30 minutes in order to allow students the opportunity to do two sessions a night should they wish to. Register in the library and receive a free cookie or fruit and a drink. This fantastic opportunity will be in place over the next two half terms until the beginning of the terminal examinations - don't miss out!" They had a tour of the campus to see what the University could offer and a talk from a NSSW Ambassador about life as a university student. After lunch they enjoyed a fantastic, funny and inspiring talk from Stephen Seki, about his time as a small child in Uganda and his journey to England to be reunited with his mum. They also learned about his struggles to learn the English Language and his resilience in achieving the results that enabled him to go to University and qualify as a Pharmacist (which he decided to do after getting the words Farmer and Pharmacist confused when asked for his choice of future career!) Check out his ‘YouTube’ channel, search for Stephen Seki. Feedback from the students was great, lots of them felt they learnt something valuable. The students were smart and behaved impeccably, NSSW and University staff were very impressed, particularly with the questions that they were asking. Game changer Magistrates in the Community Year 10 hospitality and catering and food preparation and nutrition As part of Development Day, THS welcomed John students were lucky enough to take part in a practical that involved Loveridge and Tim Knight from the Magistrates in the butchering pheasants and then incorporating them in a bruschetta dish. Last week THS welcomed Luke Moss from Exeter College as a guest speaker in the year 10 hospitality and catering lesson. His job is to connect students who want to work in the industry with hotels and restaurants in the area. He can provide guidance and can contact potential employers on behalf of students. He gave year 10 lots of ideas about apprenticeships, work placements, college placements and other really useful information. Students now have access to lots of leaflets and resources that can help them in the future. We are very much hoping to set up a visit for the future to see one of the restaurants that have Michael Caine’s academy students working there.
