  • Loughs Carra, Mask and Corrib; Resources, Borders and Passageways
Loughs Carra, Mask and Corrib; resources, borders and passageways A National Heritage Week 2020 Project by the Joyce Country and Western Lakes Heritage Network Introduction: Loughs Carra, Mask and Corrib are all connected with all their waters draining into the Atlantic Ocean. Their origins lie in the surrounding bedrock and the moving ice that dominated the Irish landscape. Today they are landscape icons, angling paradise and drinking water reservoirs but they have also shaped the communities on their shores. This project, the first of the Joyce Country and Western Lakes Heritage Network, explores the relationships that the people from the local towns and villages have had with these lakes, how they were perceived, how they were used and how they have been embedded in their history. The project consists of a series of short articles on various subjects that were composed by heritage officers of the local community councils and members of the local historical societies. They will dwell on the geological origin of the lakes, evidence of the first people living on their shores, local traditions and historical events and the inspiration that they offered to artists over the years. These articles are collated in this document for online publication on the Joyce Country and Western Lakes Geopark Project website (www.joycecountrygeoparkproject.ie) as well as on the website of the various heritage societies and initiatives of the local communities. Individual articles – some bilingual as a large part of the area is in the Gaeltacht – will be shared over social media on a daily basis for the duration of National Heritage Week.

  • THE JOHN BYRNE BAND the John Byrne Band Is Led by Dublin Native and Philadelphia-Based John Byrne
THE JOHN BYRNE BAND The John Byrne Band is led by Dublin native and Philadelphia-based John Byrne. Their debut album, After the Wake, was released to critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic in 2011. With influences ranging from Tom Waits to Planxty, John’s songwriting honors and expands upon the musical and lyrical traditions of his native and adopted homes. John and the band followed up After the Wake in early 2013 with an album of Celtic and American traditional tunes. The album, Celtic/Folk, pushed the band on to the FolkDJ Charts, reaching number 36 in May 2015. Their third release, another collection of John Byrne originals, entitled “The Immigrant and the Orphan”, was released in Sept 2015. The album, once again, draws heavily on John’s love of Americana and Celtic Folk music and with the support of DJs around the country entered the FolkDJ Charts at number 40. Critics have called it “..a powerful, deeply moving work that will stay with you long after you have heard it” (Michael Tearson-Sing Out); “The Vibe of it (The Immigrant and the Orphan) is, at once, as rough as rock and as elegant as a calm ocean..each song on this album carries an honesty, integrity and quiet passion that will draw you into its world for years to come” (Terry Roland – No Depression); “If any element of Celtic, Americana or Indie-Folk is your thing, then this album is an absolute yes” (Beehive Candy); “It’s a gorgeous, nostalgic record filled with themes of loss, hope, history and lost loves; everything that tugs at your soul and spills your blood and guts…The Immigrant and the Orphan scorches the earth and emerges tough as nails” (Jane Roser – That Music Mag) The album was released to a sold-out crowd at the storied World Café Live in Philadelphia and 2 weeks later to a sold-out crowd at the Mercantile in Dublin, Ireland.

Joint Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment ______________________ Submission by Independent News & Media plc ______________________ 6th February 2017 Independent House, 27-32 Talbot Street, Dublin 1 | www.inmplc.com EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1. Independent News & Media plc (“INM”) has been invited to address the Joint Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment in relation to the media merger examination of the proposed acquisition of CMNL Limited (“CMNL”), formerly Celtic Media Newspapers Limited, by INM (Independent News & Media Holdings Limited) by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (“BAI”). 2. The agreement for the sale and purchase of the entire issued share capital of CMNL Limited by INM was executed on 2nd September 2016. In line with the media merger requirements detailed in the Competition Acts 2002-2014, INM and CMNL jointly submitted a notification to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (“CCPC”) on 5th September 2016. On 10th November 2016 the CCPC determined that the transaction would not lead to a substantial lessening of competition in any market for goods or services in the State and the transaction could be put into effect subject to the provisions of 28C(1) of the Competition Acts 2002-20141. 3. On 21st November 2016, INM and CMNL jointly notified the Minister of Communications, Climate Action and Environment of the Proposed Transaction seeking approval and outlining the reasons why the Proposed Transaction would not be contrary to the public interest in protecting plurality of media in the State. On 10th January 2017, the Minister informed the parties of his decision to request the BAI to undertake a review as provided for in Section 28D(1)(c) of the Competition Acts 2002- 2014.

  • Legal Interpreters in the News in Ireland
Legal Interpreters in the News in Ireland Mary Phelan Dublin City University, Ireland The International Journal for [email protected] Translation & Interpreting Research trans-int.org Abstract: This article consists of a review of court reports from national and provincial newspapers in Ireland over an eight year period from 2003 to 2010. Coverage suggests that interpreters are not always provided in police stations or in the courts and that on occasion friends and family members act as interpreters in court. The issue of proficiency in English is a recurrent one and the reports provide an insight into the attitudes of judges, lawyers and police officers to defendants who are not proficient in the language. Meanwhile, some solicitors consistently request interpreters for their clients when they appear in court. Other salient issues are cost, interpreter competency and interpreter ethics. Keywords: competency, court, ethics, interpreter, police, proficiency 1. Introduction The present DPP [Director of Public Prosecutions], James Hamilton, recalls that on one occasion a German sailor was brought into court charged with a public order offence following a night on the town. He was asked to stand up, but did not move. He describes what happened next: Does he speak English? the judge enquired of the garda. No, Justice, he replied. Is there an interpreter? No, Justice. Does anyone here speak German? A hand went up at the back of the court. Swear him in, demanded the judge, and the man was sworn in as an interpreter. Ask him his name, Judge O hUadhaigh demanded of the interpreter. Fatt iss your name? the interpreter, who had clearly watched too many war movies, asked the defendant in German- accented English.
