CU’S “MAGIC NUMBER” IS 1
Only Colorado, Iowa State or Missouri can win the Big 12 North Division. CU needs just one win or an Iowa State loss to secure its fourth division title in five seasons; ISU needs a win over the Buffs Saturday, along with a win at Kansas on Nov. 26 and a CU loss to Nebraska the day before. Missouri needs a lot to happen, starting with all three must tie at 5-3. That would then activate the third tiebreaker: record against the fourth, and then fifth and then sixth place team in the division. Missouri’s lone shot to win is for Nebraska to finish fourth outright, as if the three tie at 5-3, MU would own the only win over NU.
IN THE POLLS
Colorado was ranked No. 22 in the both the Associated Press (media) and Harris Interactive and No. 21 in the USA Today Coaches polls of November 5, moving up three spots on the AP and coaches ballots (two in the Harris) after the 41-12 win over Missouri. CU was in at No. 18 in the FWAA’s Grantland Rice Super 16 poll, and in the BCS Standings (Nov. 6), CU moved up four to No. 18, as the Buffs are 11th in the six averaged computer rankings. CU returned to the polls after a 25-month hiatus on October 9, as the Buffaloes were ranked No. 24 in all three, dropped out again after the loss at No. 2 Texas, and then reappeared after the 23-20 win at Kansas State. Dating back to the 1989 preseason, CU has been ranked in 185 of the last 274 polls (AP; 68%), which includes a tremendous run of 143 consecutive between 1989 and 1997 (the 10th longest streak of all-time). CU has been ranked 292 times in its history, the 21st most all-time. Since 1989, CU has played the fourth most ranked teams in the nation (85), trailing Florida (94), Michigan (90) and Florida State (88).
STAT OF THE WEEK
This marks the third time in 10 seasons in the Big 12 that the Buffs have scored 40 or more points in three league games, having also done it three times in 1997 and 2002. You have to go back to 1989 to find where CU did it more in league play (five times). All three were consecutive home games—the last time CU scored 40-plus in three straight games at Folsom was in 1999 (and before that in 1994and just six times overall); CU has never scored 40 or more in four straight games at Folsom since it opened in 1924, and has done it just once in Boulder: one game in 1893 and the first three in 1894.
OBSCURE NOTE OF THE WEEK
QB Joel Klatt had some impressive numbers in the win over Missouri, including opening the game with 12 straight completions. But hidden in the stats was the fact that on first down, he completed 14-of-15 passes for 148 yards (and three first downs). On the season, he’s been on target more often than not on the down, clicking at a 70.1 percent clip (75-of-107) and throwing for 940 yards and 31 first downs (along with five touchdowns).
