ABSTRACT

Thefollowing new brachyuran records are reported from T aiwan: Sphaerodromiaducoussoi , Cryptodromiatumida (Dromiidae), Lambrachaeusramifer (Parthenopidae),and Sakailajaponica (Aethridae).Additional records of some uncommon species from T aiwan, namely Metadynomene tanensis (Dynomenidae), Petalomeragranulata (Dromiidae), DaldorŽa horrida (Parthenopidae), and Aethrascruposa (Aethridae)are also reported. These bring the number of species known from Taiwanto: Dromiidae (11), Dynomenidae (1), Parthenopidae (12), and Aethridae (2).

INTRODUCTION

Renewedinterest in the brachyuranfauna of Taiwanhas resulted in several, im- portant, recent papers.Tan et al. (1999)published a list ofspecies ofParthenopidae knownfrom Taiwan. At the recent International Symposiumon Marine Biologyin Taiwan,May 1998, many new brachyuran records from T aiwanwere reported for

(2000)added many species ofEriphiidae, Pilumnidae, and Xanthidae to the island’s knownfauna. Since the symposium, new material ofseveral species, notpreviously known from Taiwan, has beendiscovered. This material is the subject ofthe present paper. Restricted synonymiesare givenfor each species, focusingon records in the vicinity ofTaiwan. The following collection abbreviationsare used: TaiwanMu- seum,Taipei (TMCD),National TaiwanOcean University ,Keelung(NTOU), AcademicaSinica, Taipei (ASIZ),Zoological Reference Collection, Rafes Mu- seum,National University ofSingapore, Singapore (ZRC), and Museum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris (MNHN).The Ž rst male gonopodis referredto as G1 andthe secondas G2.

This species is also knownfrom Japan, Indonesia, New Caledonia, and the TuamotuIslands, French Polynesia (McLay,1999).These are the secondand third recordsof M. tanensis fromT aiwan.McLay (1999) reported a small male specimen (9 :0 8:0 mm) from £ north-easternTaiwan. The depth of the specimen collected duringthe “TAIWAN 2000”cruise was 213m, whichlies within the depthrange for M. tanensis namely, 205-520m. This species is oneof the deeper-waterdynomenids. Discussion. —InJapan, M. tanensis has beenconfused with Dynomene praedator A.Milne-Edwards,1879. Sakai (1976)listed M. tanensis as a synonym of D.praedator ,andused a photoof M. tanensis to represent D.praedator . But these twospecies are verydistinct andhave different habitats: D.praedator is a shallow water species, oftenfound among coral, while M. tanensis is adeepwater species rangingfrom 205 to 520 m. M. tanensis is coveredby ashort soft tomentum
