The marine gasteropods embraced in the family Turridce (formerly Pleurotomidce) are considered by those wlio meddle with them to be more perplexing than any other mollnscan family. This is because that family embraces a bewildering wealth of recent and fossil species, frequently small in size, variable or indistinct in feature, and from depths difficult of access. For the most part the species are expressed by a poverty of individuals. This small proportion of individuals to a species is the general rule with carnivora, which by ecological harmony must be less numerous in individuals than the phytophaga. But the consequent scarcity of specimens hinders that exchange and comparison of material between students, so necessary for the correction of error and advance of knowledge. The range of Turrid species in space appears to be rather narrow. Our knowledge of the Australian Turridce is still very incomplete. The fauna of eastern Australia from Hobart to Torres Strait is best represented in this paper ; that of the north and west is scarcely known at all; that of the south coast has been elaborated in excellent papers by Sir Joseph Verco. Re-arrangement of species and genera to conform with modern taxonomy has rejected such old friends as Pleiirotomu, Drillia, Mangelia, Glyphnstoma, Clathurella, Cythara, and Jlehi, so that Duphnella alone survives of the generic names used in this group for our fauna by the last generation of conchologists. About three hundred and seventy recent species discussed in the following pages are divided into four sub-families. First are the Turri- nce, distinguished by a narrow unguicnlate operculum with an apical nucleus. As this feature is not always available for study, it is useful to note that the nuclear whorl is comparatively large and almost as broad as the rest of the protoconch, and that the interior of the shell is often fluted. An operculum with a medio-lateral nucleus is held to be the distin- guishing feature of the sub-family Clavatulince. Those genera are assigned to the sub-family Mangiliince, in which the protoconch is helicoid, with a very small initial, and rapidly increasing subsequent whorls. Here the texture of the adult shell is frequently "gritty," from a sculpture of minute grains; the varix is usually well developed, and the fasciole evanescent. A series of pustules on the columella is an ordinary feature. The operculum is said to be missing. An elaborately sculptured protoconch contrasts with the smooth protoconch of previous groups, and gives ready recognition to the fourth family —the Dwphnellince. — 214 RECORDS OF THE AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM. The shell is large, with a tall slender spire ; outer lip sharp, without fold or thickening ; the notch is a deep slit with parallel sides following a walled-in fasciole; within the body whorl are sharp raised revolving threads (PI. xlii., fig. 1), a feature shared by related genera. Protoconch of two smooth rounded whorls (PI. xlii., fig. 3). Operculum unguiculate, with apical nucleus. The animal has been figured by Quoy and Gaimard, 1 and by Gould. 2 The species catalogued by Brazier 3 as Pleurotoma brevieaudata is not that, but is described in this paper as Turridrupa deceptrix. What the same writer considered to be Pleurotoma punctata (op. cit., p. 151) is here recorded as Gemm.ula graeffei; and what Brazier catalogued as P. jubata and P . armillata are here included under Turridrupa acntigemmata Smith. [email protected]. edu.co RESUMEN Se estudi la composicin y abundancia de los moluscos bentnicos encontrados en el departamento de La Guajira al norte del Caribe colombiano. Para esto se realiz un crucero de investigacin a bordo del B/I Ancn del INVEMAR en donde se llevaron a cabo arrastres a 10 y 50 m de profundidad. Se recolect un total de 4840 individuos, identificndose 215 especies pertenecientes a las clases Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Scaphopoda, Cephalopoda y Polyplacophora, dentro de las cuales 19 fueron especies registradas por primera vez para el departamento. La clase Gastropoda present el mayor nmero de especies (52 %) y Bivalvia la mayor abundancia (71 % de los individuos), siendo el bivalvo Laevicardium sybariticum la especie ms abundante del rea de estudio. Los anlisis multivariados utilizados no mostraron patrones claramente definidos con relacin a la profundidad y el tipo de sedimento.     Chapter 3 Carving up Australasia: the quest for natural biogeographic regions Most systematists will squirm at inferences derived from a non-monophyletic or artificial taxon. The importance of monophyly is critical to understanding the natural world and drawing inferences about past processes and events. Since the early 19th century, plant and animal geographers have also been concerned about correctly identifying natural areas. Plant geographer and taxonomist Augustin de Candolle tried to propose natural laws when proposing natural areas and failed. Humboldt abandoned natural classification and assigned vegetable forms, thereby creating a useful classification, which was unfortunately artificial. For early 19th century Australasian biogeographers, the concept of cladistic biogeography and area monophyly was decades away, while the importance of finding natural areas was immediate. Natural areas allowed the biogeographer to make inferences about the biotic evolution of a region such as Australia or New Zealand. Discovering the relationships between natural areas would allow for better inferences about dispersal pathways and evolutionary connections between continental floras and faunas, rather than proposing ephemeral land-bridges or sunken continents. Still, after 150 years of searching, biogeographers puzzle over the natural regions of Australasia. Why natural regions? As in biological systematics, artificial taxa represent a pastiche of distantly related taxa (think of the term ‘insectivores’, which would include all insect eating animals, such as funnel-web spiders, bee-eaters and echidnas). Artificial taxa are more closely related to other taxa than they are to themselves. The same is true for biogeography – artificial areas, such as ‘Australia’, are composites that are more closely related to other areas than they are to themselves.

    Having held the position in an acting capacity, Etheridge experienced no dif­ ficulty in assuming the full-time position of curator on 1 January 1895. He had, of course, to relinquish his half-time post in the Geological Survey but, as consulting palaeontologist to the Survey, he retained a foot in each camp and continued to publish under the aegis of both institutions. His scientific staff consisted of six men. Whitelegge was still active in his researches on marine invertebrates and was engaged in testing the efficiency of formalin as a preservative. North continued his studies on birds, but somewhat less actively since, to free Brazier for work on his long-delayed catalogue, he had been made responsible also for the ethnological, numismatic and historical collections. Conchology was now in the hands of Charles Hedley, first appointed in 1891 on a temporary basis to handle the routine matters of this department and to leave Brazier more time for his catalogue. Born in England, Hedley came to Australia at the age of twenty to seek relief from asthma and after a short period working on an oyster lease on Stradbroke Island, turned to fruit growing at Boyne Island. When a badly fractured left arm rendered him unfit for heavy work, he moved to Brisbane where, in 1889, he obtained a position on the staff of the Queensland Museum and developed an interest in shells. Finding that the collections and library of that insti­ tution were inadequate for his needs, he moved to Sydney and, within a few months, was recruited to the Museum at the age of thirty.

Parnell Excerpt More information 1 Geomorphology and the Great Barrier Reef 1.1 Introduction The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is the largest coral reef system in the world. It extends from 248 300 S in the south to 98 300 S in the north, a distance of about 2300 km along the north-east shelf of Australia (Fig. 1.1). Accurate estimates of dimensions and other geographical data are available only for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (345 500 km2) or the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area (348 000 km2) which also includes islands excluded from the Park. Within this area are 2900 reefs occupying over 20 000 km2 or 9% of the 224 000 km2 shelf area (Hopley et al., 1989). However, this administrative area does not include the contiguous shelf of Torres Strait, data for which are more scant. The Strait is 150 km wide and east of the line of high islands, which link Australia to Papua New Guinea, the shelf has a width of over 200 km. Estimated total shelf area here is about 37 000 km2 and, relying on comparative data from the adjacent Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (which ends at 108 420 S) there may be a further 750 reefs and shoals with a total area of about 6000 km2. The GBR is also one of the best studied in the world. Although first described during James Cook’s voyage of exploration in 1770, because of science’s preoccupation with atolls, it did not become a major focus until after the establishment of the Great Barrier Reef Committee in 1922 and the ground-breaking year-long Royal Society Expedition to Low Isles near Cairns in 1928–29 (see below and Bowen and Bowen, 2002).

It has always been my conviction that the spasmodic and haphazard collecting so far undertaken has not exhausted the molluscan species to be found in the deeper waters of South- eastern Australia. Only two large single collections have been made; first by the vessel " Challenger " in 1874 at Station 162 off East Moncoeur Island in 38 fathoms. These collections were described in the " Challenger " reports by Rev. Boog. Watson (Gastropoda) and E. A. Smith (Pelecypoda). In the latter was included a description of a shell Thracia watsoni not since taken in Victoria though dredged by Mr. David Howlett off St. Francis Island, South Australia. In 1910 the F. I. S. " Endeavour " made a number of hauls both north and south of Gabo Island and off Cape Everard. The u results of this collecting can be found in the Endeavour " reports. T. Iredale, 1924, published the results of shore and dredging collections made by Roy Bell. Since this time continued haphazard collecting has been carried out mostly as a hobby by trawler fishermen either for their own interest or on behalf of interested friends. Although some of this material has reached the hands of competent workers, over the years the recording of new species has probably been delayed.

E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY: Samples of a soft-bottom community from the continental slope of Campos Basin, off southeast Brazil, were obtained between 2001 and 2003 by the Research Vessel “Astro-Garoupa” with a 0.25 m2 box corer or by dredging with a Charcot dredge. A total of 177 samples were taken at depths ranging from 700 to 1950 m. Mollusks were present at all of the stations and among Gastropoda the Turridae showed the highest diversity. Within the family Cochlespirinae we found: Leucosyrinx tenoceras (Dall, 1889), L. verrillii (Dall, 1881), expanding the known distribution of the latter species farther south, and L.? subgrundifera (Dall, 1888), which is the first record of this species for the South Atlantic and the shallowest depth at which it has ever been found. Within the family Drilliinae we found Splendrillia centimata (Dall, 1889), also the first record of this species for the South Atlantic and its shallowest depth. Within the subfamily Oenopotinae we describe here three new species in the genus Oenopota Mörch, 1852: O. seraphina n. sp., O. diabula n. sp. and O. carioca n. sp.
