SAINT PARISH

Prayer to Saint Andrew the Apostle

O Glorious Saint Andrew, you were the first to recognize and follow the Lamb of God. With your friend Saint John, you remained with for that day, for your entire life, and now throughout eternity. As you led your brother to Christ and many others after Him, draw us also to Him. Teach us to lead others to Christ solely out of love for Him and dedication in His service. Help us to learn the lesson of the cross and to carry our daily crosses without complaint so that they may carry us to Jesus. Amen.

HYMNS DURING MASS

Entrance: Jerusalem, My Destiny Refrain: I have fixed my eyes on your hills, Jerusalem, my Destiny! Though I cannot see the end for me, I cannot turn away. We have set our hearts for the way; this journey is our destiny. Let no one walk alone. The journey makes us one. Other spirits, lesser gods, have courted me with lies. Here among you I have found a truth that bids me rise. (Refrain) See, I leave the past behind; a new land calls to me. Here among you now I find a glimpse of what might be. (Refrain)

Psalm: My God, Why Have You Abandoned Me?

Offertory: INSTRUMENTAL Communion: Behold the Cross Behold the cross on which was hung life’s very Lord, God’s darling One; Mary’s own babe, so cold and so still, helpless before her on Calvary hill.

Nails in his hands, nails in his feet, a traitor kiss upon his cheek; and his pierced heart, now broken in two, love crucified for me and for you.

Eyes that won’t see, ears that won’t hear, lips that deny the friend once so dear; slowly he turns and captures your eye, then passes on to Calv’ry to die.

Closing: SILENCE

PARISH EVENTS

The Divine Mercy Novena A novena is typically nine days of prayer in preparation of a celebration of a feast day. On Good Friday you are invited to begin this nine-day Novena which will end on the Feast of Divine Mercy— Sunday, April 11.

The Chaplet can be said anytime, but the Lord specifically asked that it be recited as a novena. This Divine Mercy Novena is recited perpetually at the Hour of Great Mercy---the three o’clock hour.

Our Lord gave Saint Faustina a different intention for each of the nine days: All mankind, especially sinners; the souls of priests and religious; all devout and faithful souls; those who do not believe in God and those who do not yet know Jesus; the souls who have separated themselves from the Church; the meek and humble souls and the souls of little children; the souls who especially venerate and glorify His mercy; the souls detained in purgatory; and souls who have become lukewarm.

"I desire that during these nine days you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy, that they may draw therefrom strength and refreshment and whatever grace they have need of in the hardships of life, and especially at the hour of death" (Diary, 1209).

Holy Week and the Sacred Paschal Triduum Holy Week is most definitely a very sacred time of the year, for it is now that we will commemorate and re- member the last week of Jesus’ life on this earth These are the days leading up to the great Easter Feast. The Lenten season of sacrifice and self-denial is about to come to an end, but this coming week is extremely im- portant for all Christians. The greatest focus of the week is the Passion (suffering) and Christ and the events that led up to it.

Historical documents tell us that as early as the fourth century the Church celebrated this “Great Week” with a feeling of profound sanctity. It begins with Palm Sunday, which marks Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The central feature of the service proper to this day, as it was in the earliest times, is the procession of palms. The palms are blessed and are then borne in procession to the church, where an entry is made with a certain amount of ceremony, after which the Mass is celebrated. The other notable and very ancient feature of the pre- sent Palm Sunday service is the reading of the Gospel of the Passion by three readers.

Especially important for Catholics is the Easter Triduum. This is the three days just before Easter. On Holy Thursday, we reenact the Lord’s , which He shared with His apostles on the night He was betrayed and arrested. This is one of the most beautiful liturgies of the entire liturgical year. At the Mass, the priest will wash the feet of twelve people, just as Jesus did. Also on this night, priests all over the world will renew their sacred vows. This is because, at the Last Supper, Jesus not only instituted the Mass (Eucharist) but also the ministerial priesthood.

On Good Friday, the day of the crucifixion and death of our Lord, we have the veneration of the Cross. A ser- vice is held at three o’clock in the afternoon (the hour He is believed to have died) and another later in the evening. We go forward and kiss the Cross in order to show honor and respect for Christ’s sacrifice for our sake. There is no consecration of the Eucharist on this day, and the Communion we receive will be from the night before, which has been reserved in the tabernacle.

Holy Saturday is a vigil. We keep watch for the expectant rising of Our Savior. This was the day He went down into the netherworld in order to bring back up with Him into heaven those who had died before His coming. Up to this time, the gates to heaven were closed and no one could go there because of the original sin of Adam. Jesus changed all that. By paying the price for our sins on the Cross, He gained for us our eternal salvation, and heaven was opened once more. Also on this night, persons who have spent months of prepara- tion will be received through Baptism and Confirmation into the Catholic Church for the first time. It is a joy- ous occasion.

Those who engage themselves wholeheartedly in living the entire paschal cycle (Lent, Triduum and Easter’s Fifty Days) discover that it can change them forever. This is especially so of the Triduum which, standing at the heart of the Easter season, is an intense immersion in the fundamental mystery of what it is to be Christian. During these days, we suffer with Christ so that we might rise with Him at His glorious Resurrection. Holy Week is a time to clear our schedules of unnecessary activities. Our minds and hearts should be fixed on Jesus and what He did for us. Let us bear the Cross so that may be worthy of wearing the crown He wore. ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE PARISH EVENTS As we continue to face the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic, please take a moment to review the steps taken by St. Andrew the Apostle Parish.

These are the protocols mandated by the CDC, Commonwealth of PA, and the Diocese of Pittsburgh: All individuals who enter the Church for any reason (such as private prayer, the Celebrations of Mass or Confession), MUST WEAR A MASK, covering their nose and mouth. Masks are available at all entrances. All are asked to PLEASE USE HAND SANITIZER upon entering the church building. All are asked to be attentive to the seating restrictions, sitting at least 6 feet from anyone else in the pew, the exception being that you can sit in closer proximity to the people you came with (i.e. spouses, family members, etc.). We are allowed to seat 75% of our seating capacity. Be attentive to those pews taped off.

Additional steps we are facilitating here at St. Andrew the Apostle: We have instituted Pandemic Porters, who help the parish ensure Safety Compliance and Accountability. All clergy have been wearing masks. While you may exit the church by any door, you will find that each church will only have ONE set of doors opened: Charleroi - please use the main doors with the handicap ramp. Monongahela - please use the side door with the handicap ramp. Donora - please use the front door of the Church. To assist in the safety of everyone in the congregation, if you choose to receive Holy Communion on the tongue, please wait until everyone in the Congregation has received Communion. Afterward, you may come to the priest or deacon so that he may sanitize properly. PLEASE WHEN LEAVING USE ALL DOORS. Finally, we are still providing an Online Mass for the Weekend, as noted in the bulletin. Check the parish website at https://saintandrewmidmon.org. All Doors to the offices will be locked during business hours, you must either ring the door bells at the Monongahela and Charleroi sites or call the office in Donora and someone will answer the door. The offices are closed to the Public. Following the guidelines from the Diocese our offices are kept closed for the safety of our essential employees. We will offer assistance to anyone who comes; however, we are not allowed to congregate in the buildings.

ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE 7VI1J:`1:J QI Palm Sunday, as the name suggests, is the Sunday preceding Easter when we commemorate Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem where He was greeted with palm branches. There is a rich biblical symbolism to the palm branch. In ancient times they were used to symbolize goodness and victory across many different cultures. King Solomon had palm branches carved into the walls and doors of the Temple. Matthew 21:1-9 tells us that when Christ came into Jerusalem, riding on a colt, the people placed branches in His path. Revelation 7:9 tells us that “all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, palms in their hands.” This liturgical celebration directly links us back to the time of Christ’s entering into His Passion. We, just like the people of Jerusalem 2000 years ago, greet him with palm branches, and a week later are a part of His crucifixion. When we take our palms home, let them remind us of Christ’s sacrifice for our sake, and our joyful waiting for Him to come again!

Bishop David Zubik wants to remember all parishoners this following message regarding the Vaccines for COVID. "In our statement as the Bishops of Pennsylvania, you will remember, and I quote: “In essence, we recognize that at this time individuals are not given a choice of which vaccine to receive and that this should not prevent Catholics from getting vaccinated as soon as possible. Catholics may in good conscience receive any vaccine, in order to protect themselves. Once again, being vaccinated safely against COVID-19 should be considered an act of love of our neighbor and part of our moral responsibility for the common good.” What gave us as the Bishops of Pennsylvania the solid ground to issue that statement was a note from the instruction from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. There are three important points from the Congregation to consider:

♦ In our current grave pandemic situation, Catholics may receive in good conscience any vaccine in order to protect themselves and others.

♦ All Catholics are encouraged to clearly voice our concerns about using aborted stem cell lines to the manufacturers of anti-COVID-19 vaccines requesting that as the future unfolds they make untainted vaccines available. This can be done by the attached link to template letters produced by the USCCB. (https://www.usccb.org/prolife/biomedical-research)

♦ We have the responsibility to care for all people from the moment of conception in the womb to the moment of natural death. PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD MARCH 28, 2021 ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE ANNUAL FISH FRY

Family Connection

Palm Sunday, also called Passion Sunday, marks the beginning of Holy Week. During this week, we prepare ourselves for Easter by prayerfully reflecting on the events of Jesus’ passion and death. During this week, your family might display a crucifix in a prominent place as reminder of the salvation that Christ won for us. This can also serve as the focal point for family prayer during Holy Week. Because of the length and complexity of the passion narrative, it is difficult for children to remain attentive when it is proclaimed in its entirety. Families can make it a tradition to read a portion of this Sunday’s Gospel each day of Holy Week, providing ample opportunity for children to ask questions and respond to the events described there. In this way, the entire week can become a “way of the cross.” Each day during Holy Week, the family can gather in a prayerful space with a crucifix as its focal point. The passion as found in Mark’s Gospel might be read as follows throughout the week:

Sunday: Mark 11:1-10 (Gospel at the Procession with Palms)

Monday: Mark 14:1-11

Tuesday: Mark 14:12-26

Wednesday: Mark 14:27-52

Thursday: Mark 14:53-72

Friday: Mark 15:1-41

Saturday: Mark 15:42-47

After reading from the Gospel each night, the family might reflect on the reading together. Conclude your prayer time together by praying the Lord’s Prayer or by singing an appropriate hymn such as “Jesus, Jesus,” “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?” or “What Wondrous Love is This.”

“Lent in a Bag” Family Prayer Activities

WEEK 6-PALM SUNDAY

“Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem signaled the start of the last week of His earthly ministry. In a few days' time He would be betrayed, scourged, mocked, and nailed to the cross to die -- only to rise again on the third day after His death.” Use your palm from today’s Mass to create a cross.
