CHEN runs a small supermarket with her brother. XU’S given name, Qiangnan, means “strong man” and she says her parents named her so because they hoped she would be as strong as a man. Xu came to Shanghai last July and felt depressed at the beginning as she couldn’t understand Shanghainese and didn’t earn enough to make ends meet. Now life is going more smoothly. “My salary has increased and I can save a small amount every month,” she says. Xu says she’s learned a lot during her nine months here, something she probably would never have done in her hometown. But she also sees drawbacks. “Shanghai is too big, too crowded and too noisy,” she says. “The traffic is just terrible.” Nevertheless, she says she wants to stay in the city as long as possible, earn more money and buy a house here. “I want to find a Shanghai boyfriend too,” she adds.

THE couple, who used to be classmates in the university, married for more than 10 years, runs a dessert cafe in the city. “Making dessert is my husband’s hobby,” says Wang Yueying, the wife. “Shanghai men usually enjoy cooking. Friends all said his cakes and desserts were delicious, so a dessert cafe became our dream.” Wang says they do not mind the hard work and long hours, opening the cafe from 10am to 11pm. “It is like raising a child,” she says. “The first several years must be difficult, but when he can eat and walk by himself, it will be easier.” Asked if spending so much time together produces any quarrels, she laughs. “Do we? SHEN came to Shanghai at the age of 12 to learn painting, but during the 1980s he returned to his hometown and worked as an art editor at the Taizhou Daily. In 2003, he resigned and came back to Shanghai to pursue his art dream. “My sisters live here and I have many old friends here,” he says. “Shanghai is an ideal place for me.” He cited the experience of seeing the works of Western artists like Picasso and Monet many years ago as a real eye-opener. “I have been trying to mix skills of modern art with Chinese painting,” he says. “It is not easy ... Chinese strokes and Western color mixture. If I had been living in my hometown, I would never have painted such colors.”

THE cabbie has been at his job for nearly 20 years. “I can hardly remember,” he says, acknowledging that most cab drivers his age have retired or gone on to some other line of work. “I have two years to go before retirement,” he says. “What else can I do? I’m the only bread earn- er of the family and my daughter still depends on me. Other people’s daughters at the same age are getting married, but my daughter is retarded. MORE than three years ago, Wang came to Shanghai just after his college graduation. He has already changed jobs several times and now is a real estate agent. Wang goes through streets and alleys seeking customers interested in the property he represents. His income depends on sales commis- sions. Though the housing market slowdown has put a strain on him, he remains energetic and full of hope about life. “Shanghai is a big city full of opportunities,” he says. “One day I hope I can find my own niche here and hopefully purchase a flat.”

Ivan Marks, 19, student, from New York, USA

ASKED why he came to study at NYU in Shanghai, Marks says, “I was born in New York and there is nothing new for me there.” On learning Chinese, he says you need to love it first. “I would say Chinese culture is now in my blood,” he says, adding that he uses every chance he gets to learn, chatting with Chinese people and using his 26, shop owner, phone to put down new words.
