BACKGROUND ON VSA

Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) is a based international development organisation that sends Kiwi volunteers on long and short-term assignments to share their skills with governments, business and communities striving for change in the wider Pacific and beyond. VSA focuses on people-centred international development. There are currently 37 VSA staff working in , as well as field staff based in Timor-Leste, Bougainville, , , and . In addition, VSA has a number of contractual arrangements with other individuals to provide volunteer support and/or programme development in other countries.

VSA is registered in New Zealand as an incorporated society and is a registered with the Charities Commission (CC36739). It is an independent, secular and not-for-profit organisation governed by a Council elected by the general membership of the organisation. VSA is funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme and corporate and private donors.

BACKGROUND TO FUNDRAISING & BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT TEAM The Fundraising & Business Development Team focuses on securing independent, non-government funding for VSA through a range of campaigns and activities; building and maximising the quality and impact of relationships; and growing VSA’s business by exploring, investigating and testing innovative programmes and strategies. It also has a significant role in developing partnerships with New Zealand and international private and public sector organisations and other development agencies including regional and UN agencies, in order to access a broader range of New Zealand skills and expertise, and provide volunteering opportunities for skilled New Zealanders.

The team has a Fundraising & Business Development Manager; a Business Development Manager; a Fundraising & Stewardship Co-ordinator; a Fundraiser; a Fundraising Administrator; and a Partnerships Officer. Plans are also in place to recruit a research and development position for the team later this year, which will be managed by this position. Fundraising and Business Development have an integrated approach to development and work closely with other VSA teams including Communications, International Programmes and Volunteer Recruitment.

POSITION PURPOSE

Reporting to the Fundraising & Business Development Manager, the purpose of the Business Development Manager position is to:

1. Focus on developing and managing relationships with New Zealand and regional partners in the corporate, public and NGO sectors that build capacity and sustainability for Pacific governments, business and communities; deliver mutually rewarding partnerships and expand the work of VSA. 2. Increase the opportunities for skilled New Zealanders from diverse backgrounds to participate in volunteering overseas and contribute to countries’ development. 3. Support the Fundraising & Business Development team in effective stakeholder engagement, excellent relationship management and revenue generation including a fee for service. 4. Integrate the principles and tools of business development across VSA to ensure consistent best practice management of activities. 5. Monitor and report on the impact of VSA’s business development activities in New Zealand and across the wider Pacific. 6. Manage two members of staff - the current Partnerships Officer and a research and development position (yet to be recruited).

RESPONSIBILITIES Business development and management • Build on existing relationships with partner organisations based in New Zealand and internationally that align with VSA’s brand values and strategic intent. • Assess appropriate opportunities with the private, public, academic and NGO sectors in New Zealand and across the Pacific to develop diverse partnerships that provide assignments, volunteers and other support. • Encourage innovation and investigate opportunities for social enterprise. • Manage service-delivery relationships with international development agencies and multilaterals such as UN agencies that seek to involve volunteers. • Work with private and public sector partners to identify and inform suitable people within their organisations to participate in volunteering opportunities overseas that develop their leadership potential, and benefit both the New Zealand and in-country partner. • As the primary holder of the relationship, implement solution-based approaches to resolving difficulties related to partners. • Working with the Fundraising & Business Development Team, explore options for securing financial and in-kind contributions from partners. • Ensure partnership agreements are up to date and accurately record shared purpose, arrangements, contributions and focus areas. • Monitor key performance indicators, share learnings and report on the impact of VSA’s business development activities in New Zealand and across the wider Pacific at a senior level. • Financial management and budgetary control, including establishment of annual budget figures, monitoring of expenditure, reporting on variances, and authorising payments. • Recommend operational efficiencies to improve VSA’s organisational delivery and performance. • Undertake agreed field visits to monitor and evaluate programme progress, build and maximise relationships and provide essential feedback to VSA. • Deputise as required for the Fundraising and Business Development Manager.

People management • Set and monitor agreed key performance objectives with direct staff reports (currently one with a second to be recruited later in the year) to achieve strategic objectives, annual plans and milestones. • Supervise staff to achieve successful deployment and pastoral care of volunteers, and effective management of the VSA programme in locations not covered by the International Programme Team; and the development of new initiatives, projects and programmes supported by relevant evidence and data.

Special Feature of Role:

Most recruitment of VSA volunteers is undertaken through an annual schedule of monthly “weekend selections” where candidates are interviewed by external selection panellists and selection advisers (who all volunteer their time). Along with other senior staff at VSA, the Business Development Manager will be expected to participate occasionally as an interviewer on these weekend selections and appropriate Time Off In-Lieu will be granted for this weekend work. Interviews are currently scheduled for one Saturday per month however the Business Development Manager will not need to be involved every month.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

• A tertiary qualification in an appropriate field is preferred. • Well-developed ability to build relationships with a range of stakeholders including proven experience in working with partners to develop shared goals and outcomes. • Excellent networking skills including experience of interacting and managing key relationships • An understanding of business development drivers and processes. • Experience in the corporate or public sector, or similar business development role in a NGO. • Demonstrated project management skills, including project development, implementation and evaluation. • Proven expertise in analysis, planning, monitoring and evaluation and an ability to prioritise tasks to meet deadlines. • Well-developed communication skills – written, oral and listening – you’ll need to demonstrate confidence and an outgoing nature, and be a team player. • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to act in a professional, courteous and friendly manner. • Strong computer literacy, including a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office. • Commitment to the values of volunteerism, the principles of international development and an understanding of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and bi- and multi-culturalism. • The successful candidate will be asked to provide evidence of their right to live and work in New Zealand.
