Warrick Public Education Foundation Reaching out to Warrick County’s educational imagination

Learning through imagination takes more than just brainpower.

The Warrick Public Education Foundation (WPEF) operates as a 501 (c) (3) philanthropic organi- zation to enhance education by supporting imaginative programs and projects. It is a non- profit broadly-based partnership in education established to encourage, promote and assist educational excellence in the Warrick County School Corporation.

WPEF Board of Directors Kirby King, President Larry Meyer Bernie Montgomery, Treasurer Lee Ann Roeder Suzanne Godeke, Secretary Anne Rust

Warrick Randy Beck Brad Schneider Public Education Foundation Dan Godeke Harry Steinsberger Maria Harris Diane Wallen

The Warrick Public Education Foundation has three major programs active in Warrick County. These innovative programs need support by corporate sponsors and individual donations like yours. The more we can build our funds, the more programs we can sponsor in the future. The three major programs of the Warrick Public Education Foundation are highlighted on the next page.

In addition to the funds received from corporate sponsors and individual donors, funds from the Indi- ana Education Trust license plate go directly back to the school corporation designated by the motorist. Funds are distributed through organizations such as the Warrick Public Education Foundation. 7

EDUCATION GRANT PROGRAM These grants provide funding for innovative and creative projects that cannot be funded through the available school budget. Grants are awarded each semester to teachers in the Warrick County School Corporation. The WPEF funded 14 education grants totaling $7,424 to teachers in the War- rick County School Corporation during the fall 2009 grant pe- riod. These grants ranged from $115 to $1,000. The WPEF re- ceived 39 education grant requests in October that sought $18,215 in funding.

SUMMER MUSICAL PROGRAM This for-credit summer school program is the flagship pro- gram of the public education foundation. Engaging over 100+ students each summer for 14 consecutive summers, this program provides a family friendly event that enter- tains, educates and enlightens an estimated 4,000 area residents. This high-quality and professional production also provides a creative outlet for the talented students in the tri-state area.

ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE PROGRAM Funds are provided to secondary school principals to be used in assisting students without the financial resources to pur- sue the possibility of further educational opportunities. This program provides funding for items such as SAT, ACT or GED test fees and college application fees.

The Students, Directors, and Staff of the Warrick County Summer Musical would like to say “Thanks!” to the WPEF for their continued support. 8

Jeff & Tracey Cozart - Business Managers Having just completed four years as Board Members for the Castle High School Show Choirs, Jeff & Tracey consider it an honor and joy to team up again and serve together in The Wizard of Oz. Passionate and com- mitted to students and the performing arts, both Jeff & Tracey served as Business Managers last year for Oklahoma! and absolutely enjoyed it. In their role as Business Managers, Jeff is the numbers and technology guy and Tracey the outgoing one who makes the phone calls and interacts with people. Together they manage forms, publicity, advertising, tickets, communications, meals, and volunteers - tasks that would be overwhelming and impossible without the assistance of great parent volunteers. Jeff holds a bachelor's de- gree in chemistry from Murray State University and has been a management professional for over 20 years. Tracey holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education from University of Southern Indiana and is the Early Childhood Director at Bethel Temple Community Church. Having celebrated their 23rd wedding anni- versary in June, they are the proud and grateful parents of Lindsey (20 yrs old and Assistant Choreographer) and Zach (16 yrs old and in the cast of The Wizard of Oz). Jeff & Tracey are excited that the whole family can participate in the Warrick County Summer Musical Program.

Katie Finn - College Intern to the Director A 2009 graduate of Memorial High School, Katie started out in local theater in shows such as Guys and Dolls and Leader of the Pack. She has been in high school productions A Christmas Carol, Alice in Wonderland, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, A Haunting (playing Norma Corwin), and Little Women (playing Jo March). She also participated in Warrick County Summer Musicals CATS, Copacabana, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Oklahoma! (playing Aunt Eller). She is a sophomore at Indiana University studying Theatre & Drama, and is a member of The Singing Hoosiers. Katie wants to thank Mrs. Godeke for the opportunity to be a part of the Summer Musical yet again, and her parents for their amazing support. Lindsey Cozart - Assistant Choreographer A previous recipient of the Vectren Summer Musical Scholarship and 2009 Castle graduate, Lindsey is a sophomore at the University of Southern Indiana. Lindsey is pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education, aspiring to become a Developmental Therapist so she can continue to work with children. She was a 4 year member of the Castle Knightingales, serving 3 years as dance captain. This is Lindsey’s fourth Summer Musi- cal. Lindsey is overjoyed to be the assistant choreographer to Amanda Antey and would like to thank the following people: her Mom and Dad for always supporting her passion, Brian Adcock for teaching her not only music but also life lessons, Amanda Antey for giving her the opportunity to share her passion of dance with others, Suzanne Godeke for giving her the chance to work with her and learn from her, and finally all of her family and friends who have stood by her throughout her life. Maria Smith - Assistant Costumer Maria is costuming her fourth WPEF Summer Musical. Besides The Wizard of Oz, Maria has costumed Okla- homa!, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Copacabana. She is currently working towards a BFA in Costume Design and Technology at the University of Evansville. There she has costumed A Winter’s Tale, Top Girls, Light Up the Sky, Parade, and House of Blue Leaves. Maria has also been found on stage in CATS and Copacabana for the Warrick County Summer Musical. Maria would like to thank Alan Jobe for pushing her to be the best she can be. Michelle Johnson - Assistant Vocals Children / Property Master Michelle Johnson is a vocal music/fine arts educator for 20 yrs. originally from NY state. Receiving most of her experience at Washington Middle School, she is currently teaching at Evans Middle School (EVSC). NNOTESOTES ABOUTABOUT THETHE SSHOWHOW

Folklore, legends, myths and fairy tales have followed childhood through the ages, for every healthy youngster has a wholesome and instinctive love for stories fantastic, marvelous and manifestly unreal. The winged fairies of Grimm and Andersen have brought more happiness to childish hearts than all other human creations. Yet the old time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as "historical" in the children's library; for the time has come for a series of newer "wonder tales" in which the stereotyped genie, dwarf and fairy are eliminated, together with all the horrible and blood-curdling incidents devised by their authors to point a fearsome moral to each tale. Modern education includes morality; therefore the modern child seeks only entertainment in its wonder tales and gladly dispenses with all disagreeable incident. Having this thought in mind, the story of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was written solely to please children of today. It aspires to being a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heartaches and nightmares are left out.

L. Frank Baum - Chicago, April, 1900.

Did you know . . .

Ray Bolger was originally cast as the Tin Woodsman. However, he insisted that he would rather play the Scarecrow - his childhood idol, Fred Stone had origi- nated that role on stage in 1902. Buddy Ebsen had been cast as the Scare- crow, and now switched roles with Bolger.
