1) Knowledge of the competition. 2) Accurate tracking of the results. 3) Recognizing when your skater has skated to the best of their abilities.

It is not enough any more to show up to the rink with your stop watch and a pen cil and paper. The coach has homework to do. The task of knowing the competi tion becomes easier the more often you are present at major competitions. This doesn't mean there aren't the occasional surprises, but these are minimized and quite often predictable. If you are not knowledgeable about the skaters, you need to spend some time talking with other coaches and/ or pouring over some meet protocols to get an idea of the speed out there. This can be done well in advance of the meet and you may be able to table a list of predictions. This may also give you an idea of what the cut off time will be. A predicted cut off time and your skater's best time are valuable pieces of information. Lap times from other competitions can be used as a predictor of pursuit times. Since the 2nd and 3rd laps of a pursuit
